Anthropic did not simply add a chatbot to Excel. On October 27, 2025, it announced Claude for Financial Services, including a Claude for Excel research-preview add-in, finance-data connectors, and six finance-specific Agent Skills. By August 2026, the product had expanded into a broader finance-agent platform with Excel, Word, and PowerPoint integrations described as generally available, while Outlook support was still listed as coming soon.
Claude is a separate Anthropic product—not Microsoft Copilot—and it does not replace a Microsoft 365 license. Its pitch is specialized financial research, modeling, document extraction, and multi-step workflows. Microsoft’s advantage remains its control of Excel, Microsoft 365 identity, collaboration, and enterprise data infrastructure.
What Anthropic launched in October 2025
Anthropic’s October 27, 2025 announcement had three major parts:
- Claude for Excel: a sidebar-based add-in designed to read, analyze, modify, and create workbooks.
- Financial-data connectors: integrations involving Aiera, Third Bridge through Aiera’s connector, Chronograph, Egnyte, LSEG, Moody’s, and MT Newswires.
- Six finance Agent Skills: comparable-company analysis, discounted-cash-flow modeling, due-diligence data packs, company teasers and profiles, earnings analysis, and initiating-coverage reports.
At launch, Claude for Excel was a beta research preview for Max, Enterprise, and Teams users. Anthropic initially targeted 1,000 users and used a waitlist rather than offering unrestricted access.
#1 Best Overall
Anthropic also made selected Claude models available through Microsoft Copilot Studio and Microsoft’s Researcher agent. That makes Microsoft both a distribution partner and a competitor—not merely the company Claude is trying to displace.
Why Excel matters to finance teams
For financial professionals, Excel is often the operating layer for valuation models, forecasts, scenario analysis, diligence schedules, reconciliations, and reports that later feed investment-committee materials, pitchbooks, and board presentations.
That makes an AI system capable of changing a workbook more consequential than one that only answers questions about a spreadsheet. Anthropic described Claude for Excel as able to:
- Read and analyze existing workbooks.
- Explain formulas and point to referenced cells.
- Debug and fix formulas.
- Update assumptions and populate templates.
- Build new workbooks.
- Create DCF models, scenario toggles, and sensitivity tables.
- Extract information from diligence documents into Excel outputs.
Anthropic also said the add-in was designed to preserve workbook structure and formula dependencies. That is an intended capability, not a guarantee for every model. Workbooks containing macros, external links, Power Query, custom functions, named ranges, hidden sheets, protected cells, circular references, or manual overrides require careful validation.

What Claude’s finance workflows are meant to do
Comparable-company analysis
Claude can help assemble peer-company analyses and refresh valuation multiples and operating metrics. The analyst still has to decide which companies belong in the peer group and verify fiscal periods, currencies, units, adjustments, and the treatment of companies with negative EBITDA.
A correctly calculated multiple can still be economically misleading if the peer selection is poor, the source is stale, or reported and adjusted figures have been mixed.

Discounted-cash-flow models
The announced DCF workflow covers full free-cash-flow projections, WACC calculations, scenario toggles, and sensitivity tables. This can accelerate model construction, but it is not investment advice. A DCF can be mathematically consistent while relying on unreasonable assumptions about growth, margins, taxes, capital spending, working capital, terminal value, or the discount rate.
Due-diligence data packs
Claude is intended to turn data-room documents into structured Excel outputs containing items such as financial information, customer lists, and contract terms. That is potentially useful in private equity and M&A, but document extraction creates its own review burden. Teams should check permissions, redactions, duplicate files, contradictory documents, source citations, and every material number.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsEarnings analysis
The earnings workflow can research transcripts and financials, extract metrics, identify guidance changes, and summarize management commentary. It is best used for a first pass. Analysts should still read filings, earnings releases, footnotes, and other primary disclosures before relying on a conclusion.
Initiating-coverage reports
Claude can help assemble industry research, company overviews, and valuation frameworks. That makes it a drafting and research-acceleration tool, not an independent analyst or licensed financial adviser.
The proprietary-data layer
Generic web search is often insufficient for professional finance. The value of a governed connector is access to licensed, structured, or internal information within an approved workflow.
Anthropic’s announced ecosystem includes:
- LSEG: fixed-income pricing, equities, foreign exchange, macroeconomic indicators, and analyst estimates.
- Moody’s: credit ratings, research, ownership, financials, and news covering what Anthropic describes as more than 600 million public and private companies.
- Aiera: earnings-call transcripts and investor-event summaries.
- Third Bridge: expert interviews and company or industry intelligence.
- Chronograph: private-equity portfolio, valuation, and fund-level information.
- Egnyte: governed access to internal data rooms and approved models.
- MT Newswires: global multi-asset financial-market and economic news.
Anthropic has also announced integrations or ecosystem relationships involving S&P Capital IQ, Daloopa, Morningstar, PitchBook, FactSet, Snowflake, Databricks, MSCI, Dun & Bradstreet, Fiscal AI, Financial Modeling Prep, Guidepoint, IBISWorld, SS&C Intralinks, and Verisk. The company’s May 2026 finance-agents update describes this broader ecosystem.

These are not proof that every Claude user receives a Bloomberg Terminal-like data subscription. Availability depends on the provider, customer account, geography, plan, permissions, and licensing. A customer may need an existing data subscription or may face separate API, usage, or redistribution restrictions.
Claude versus Microsoft 365 Copilot
Calling Claude a “rival” to Copilot is directionally fair, but the products compete from different starting points.
| Category | Claude for finance | Microsoft 365 Copilot |
|---|---|---|
| Vendor | Anthropic | Microsoft |
| Excel relationship | Separate Claude add-in or Microsoft 365 integration | Copilot embedded in Microsoft 365 apps |
| Main emphasis | Reasoning, spreadsheet manipulation, explanations, finance workflows, and connectors | Microsoft 365 integration, work-data grounding, and broad workplace distribution |
| Finance specialization | Finance-specific connectors and Agent Skills | General office assistant with Excel support and finance-related agents |
| Data ecosystem | Market-data, research, credit, portfolio, and internal-data connectors | Microsoft Graph, Copilot connectors, Microsoft agents, and Copilot Studio |
| Administration | Depends on Claude’s plan and deployment model | Microsoft identity, compliance, and tenant controls |
| Best fit | Finance teams wanting Claude-centered research and modeling workflows | Microsoft-first organizations seeking minimal platform switching |
Microsoft has the distribution advantage: Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, identity, and collaboration already sit in one environment. Claude’s differentiation is the finance-oriented workflow layer and its model and agent experience.
Microsoft lists enterprise Microsoft 365 Copilot at $30 per user per month when paid yearly, with a qualifying Microsoft 365 license required. Microsoft also offers Copilot Chat at no additional cost for eligible users with qualifying subscriptions, but that is not the same as full Copilot access inside the apps. See Microsoft’s enterprise pricing page for current terms.
What changed by May and August 2026
On May 5, 2026, Anthropic announced ten ready-to-run financial-services agent templates. They covered pitch building, meeting preparation, earnings review, model building, market research, valuation review, general-ledger reconciliation, month-end close, statement auditing, and KYC screening.
Anthropic described these agents as usable through Claude Cowork or Claude Code plugins, or as Managed Agents on the Claude Platform. It also described Claude working across Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook through Microsoft 365 add-ins. As of August 18, 2026, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word were described as generally available, while Outlook was still listed as coming soon.
Rank #4
The current description is therefore broader than “Claude for Excel.” It is more accurately a finance-agent platform with Microsoft 365 integrations, data connectors, and reusable workflows.
Pricing and procurement
Anthropic’s pricing page, viewed for this update, lists these signals:
- Free: $0.
- Pro: $20 monthly, or $17 per month with annual billing at $200 upfront.
- Max: from $100 monthly.
- Team standard: $25 monthly, or $20 per seat monthly with annual billing.
- Team premium: $125 monthly, or $100 per seat monthly with annual billing.
- Enterprise: $20 per seat plus usage priced at API rates; sales-assisted terms may vary.
Prices exclude applicable tax and may change. Enterprise features listed by Anthropic include SSO, SCIM, audit logs, compliance APIs, access controls, and custom retention controls. The pricing page also states that enterprise content is not used to train models by default; buyers should verify the exact contract and deployment configuration.
Claude’s cost is not directly comparable with Copilot’s license price. A real deployment may include an Anthropic plan, Microsoft 365 licensing, usage charges, and separate subscriptions for LSEG, Moody’s, FactSet, PitchBook, or another data provider.

Workbook integrity
Test representative production models—not just clean demonstrations. Include linked workbooks, external data connections, dynamic arrays, VBA, Power Query, PivotTables, hidden rows and sheets, custom functions, protected worksheets, shared workbooks, circular references, and manual overrides.
Use automatic versioning and require a human comparison of the original and modified file. “Preserves dependencies” should be treated as a product objective that must be tested, not as an unconditional safeguard.

Data and calculation errors
Common failure modes include wrong fiscal periods, thousands-versus-millions errors, incorrect currency conversion, confusion between reported and adjusted figures, misread footnotes, stale estimates, and inappropriate peer selection. Cell references and explanations improve traceability, but they do not prove that the source number or conclusion is correct.
Confidentiality and permissions
Before connecting a data room or internal model, confirm retention, training settings, audit logs, role-based permissions, data residency, connector controls, and whether generated files retain sensitive metadata. A human should approve any external communication, filing, transaction action, or client deliverable.
Anthropic’s later finance announcement explicitly places responsibility on users to review, iterate on, and approve outputs before they are sent to clients, filed, or acted on.
Who should choose Claude?
- Investment banking and private equity: potentially strong fits for diligence extraction, valuation work, earnings analysis, and report drafting—provided review controls are strict.
- Asset management: useful where the team needs specialized research and market-data connectors, but licensing and source verification are central.
- FP&A: attractive for forecast updates, reconciliations, and model documentation if the organization can control access to internal workbooks.
- Microsoft-first enterprises: Copilot is usually the simpler starting point when identity, Teams, SharePoint, Outlook, tenant administration, and vendor consolidation dominate the decision.
- Small finance teams: Claude may help with structured research and model preparation, but a consumer plan should not be treated as sufficient for confidential deal-room documents or live market-data workflows.
Choose Claude when finance-specific workflows, particular data connectors, or a Claude-centered agent stack justify operating another platform. Choose Copilot when minimizing platform change and using Microsoft’s existing controls matter more. Some organizations may reasonably use both, with clear rules about which system handles collaboration, proprietary data, and final approval.

Anthropic reported that Sonnet 4.5 reached 55.3% accuracy on the Vals AI Finance Agent benchmark in its October 2025 announcement, and later reported 64.37% for Opus 4.7. These are vendor-reported benchmark results, not evidence of superior investment performance or a guarantee of accuracy on a firm’s models.
Nor does the launch make Claude a licensed financial adviser. It can assist with research, modeling, diligence, reporting, and workflow automation. The resulting analysis still requires qualified professional judgment, source checking, model validation, and appropriate compliance review.
The most accurate description is that Claude is a finance-oriented AI workflow layer that operates inside Excel and other Microsoft 365 applications—not a simple Copilot clone and not an autonomous investment decision-maker.
