In March 2026, Reuters reported that the company was considering cuts affecting 20% or more of its workforce. By May 20, Meta had reportedly eliminated roughly 8,000 jobs—about 10% of its staff—while moving approximately 7,000 employees into AI-related initiatives and closing 6,000 open positions.
What happened to Meta’s reported 20% layoff plan?
The original 20% figure described a possible overall scope, not a finalized company announcement or completed reduction. Later reporting supports a first wave of approximately 10%, or close to 8,000 employees, alongside a broader reorganization focused on artificial intelligence.
That makes the most accurate current description: Meta considered cuts that could have affected 20% or more of its workforce, but the first implemented wave was about 10% and included substantial workforce reallocation toward AI.
The March report was a possibility, not a confirmed layoff
On March 15–16, 2026, Reuters reported that Meta was considering sweeping layoffs that could affect 20% or more of its employees. The report cited three people familiar with the matter and said senior executives had instructed managers to prepare for a possible large-scale reduction. The timing and exact scope were not settled.

Meta spokesperson Andy Stone called the report “speculative reporting about theoretical approaches.” That response was not a confirmation of the 20% figure. It also did not establish that the company had finalized a plan.
At the time, Meta reported approximately 78,865 employees as of December 31, 2025. On that basis:
- 20%: about 15,773 employees, or roughly 15,800.
- 10%: about 7,887 employees, or roughly 7,900.
These are arithmetic estimates, not audited layoff totals. The March report’s “20% or more” language should not be converted into a claim that 15,000 or more people lost their jobs.

How the plan changed by April
By April, Reuters reported that Meta’s first wave had been narrowed to approximately 10% of its global workforce, or close to 8,000 employees. Additional cuts were still being considered for later in 2026, but their size and timing were unsettled.
This distinction matters. A potential company-wide target and a first-wave reduction are different figures. The later reporting does not prove that Meta formally abandoned every possibility of reaching 20% over time; it does show that the available evidence supports roughly 10% as the first implemented round, not 20% as a completed total.

What Meta did on May 20
Reporting on the May 20 restructuring described four linked actions:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Approximately 8,000 employees were laid off, equal to about 10% of the workforce.
- Approximately 7,000 employees were moved into new initiatives involving AI workflows.
- About 6,000 open positions were closed, reducing future hiring capacity rather than directly eliminating existing employees.
- Management layers were reduced, including the elimination of managerial roles.
The figures come from reporting on an internal restructuring memo and from the Associated Press. They should be read as approximate—“about,” “roughly,” and “close to”—rather than as a formally audited final headcount.
See the Reuters report on the internal restructuring memo and the Associated Press account of the implemented cuts.
Why AI is central to the restructuring
The layoffs took place amid Meta’s intensifying investment in AI, but the evidence does not show that AI systems individually replaced every laid-off employee. The stronger conclusion is that AI shaped management’s priorities and the structure of the reorganization.
1. AI infrastructure is expensive
Training and operating advanced AI systems requires large investments in computing capacity, data centers, chips, and related infrastructure. Reducing other costs can help management redirect capital toward those projects.

- Backlit Style: Sleek, refined lines and backlighting bring both style and focus to your workspace. Choose soft tones (blue, cyan, white) for calm productivity or bold colors (red, green, purple, yellow) to match your mood-one for every day of the week
2. AI talent is expensive
Meta is competing for highly paid researchers, engineers, and product specialists. A workforce strategy that prioritizes AI may shift spending toward those roles while reducing positions considered less central to the company’s current objectives.
3. Management expects AI-assisted productivity
The restructuring reflects an expectation that AI tools can help smaller or flatter teams accomplish more. That is a management productivity claim, not proof that the anticipated gains have already been achieved.
4. Employees were reassigned, not simply removed
The reported transfer of approximately 7,000 employees into AI-workflow initiatives indicates that Meta was redirecting labor as well as cutting costs. Those workers were not counted as layoffs in the cited internal memo.
The overall change therefore cannot be described accurately as only “Meta became smaller.” It was also a shift in which projects, skills, and organizational layers received priority.

Which employees were affected?
The available reporting does not provide a complete, authoritative breakdown by department, office, geography, or job family. It supports saying that the action affected Meta globally, reduced management layers, reassigned thousands of employees to AI-related work, and canceled vacant roles.
It does not support confidently claiming that content moderation, trust and safety, cybersecurity, Reality Labs, or a particular office bore the brunt of the cuts. Those claims would require separate, direct evidence.

Did Meta need layoffs because of financial distress?
The reporting characterized Meta as being in a relatively strong financial position. The cuts therefore should not automatically be described as emergency measures or evidence that the company was struggling to survive.
A more precise interpretation is that management was making a strategic efficiency and capital-allocation decision. The goals included controlling the cost of AI infrastructure, offsetting higher investment elsewhere, reducing organizational complexity, and moving resources into AI.
For investors and employees, the distinction is important: a profitable company can cut jobs because it is changing priorities, seeking higher operating efficiency, or reallocating capital—not only because revenue has collapsed.
How this compares with Meta’s earlier layoffs
Meta’s 2026 restructuring followed several earlier workforce reductions:
- About 11,000 employees were cut in 2022.
- About 10,000 were cut in 2023.
- Additional reductions were reported in subsequent years.
- Approximately 3,600 employees, or about 5%, were affected by performance-based cuts reported in 2025.
The 2022 and 2023 “Year of Efficiency” actions eliminated approximately 21,000 jobs combined. The May 2026 round was therefore substantial, but smaller than those two rounds together. Calling it the largest layoffs in Meta’s history would overstate what the cited evidence establishes.
The causes also need to be separated. Earlier reductions were associated with efficiency efforts and changing business conditions; the 2026 action was reported in the context of a more aggressive AI expansion and organizational redesign.

What happened to possible future layoffs?
Before the May restructuring, sources told Reuters that additional layoffs could be considered in the second half of 2026. After the cuts, Mark Zuckerberg reportedly told employees that he did not expect more company-wide layoffs during the year.
Those statements are not necessarily contradictory. The April reporting concerned possible future reductions; Zuckerberg’s later wording addressed company-wide layoffs and does not necessarily rule out targeted cuts, reorganizations, attrition, or changes to hiring.
Based on the available reporting, a second company-wide wave should not be presented as having definitely occurred. The final 2026 headcount also cannot be inferred from the May estimate because later hiring, transfers, attrition, and targeted actions could change it.
Read the report on Zuckerberg’s message.
What remains unknown
- Whether later targeted reductions occurred after the May wave.
- Which departments and geographies experienced the largest effects.
- Whether specific AI tools directly replaced particular roles.
- Meta’s final 2026 workforce size.
- The precise savings and productivity gains from the restructuring.
The accurate takeaway
“Meta plans to lay off 20% of its staff” is no longer an accurate standalone description of the story. It refers to an early report about a possible plan whose scope had not been finalized.
The better-supported account is that Meta implemented a first wave of roughly 8,000 layoffs—about 10% of its workforce—while transferring approximately 7,000 employees into AI-related work, eliminating management layers, and closing around 6,000 vacant roles. AI was a major strategic context, but the evidence does not prove that automation alone caused the job losses or that a completed 20% reduction took place.
