AMD Confirmed the RX 9000 Reveal Date—and Ruled Out a 32GB RX 9070 XT

AMD revealed the RX 9000 series on February 28, 2025, but denied that the RX 9070 XT would come with 32GB. The first cards launched with 16GB of GDDR6.

AMD confirmed on February 13, 2025, that it would fully reveal its Radeon RX 9000 series on February 28 at 8:00 a.m. Eastern Time. On the same day, AMD gaming executive Frank Azor rejected reports of a 32GB Radeon RX 9070 XT. The event was a reveal, not a retail launch: the first cards went on sale March 6, 2025, with 16GB of GDDR6 memory.

What AMD confirmed

David McAfee, AMD’s vice president and general manager for Ryzen CPU and Radeon Graphics, announced that the company would use the AMD Gaming YouTube channel for its Radeon RX 9000 reveal on February 28, 2025, at 8:00 a.m. EST. The presentation was expected to provide the specifications, performance information, pricing and availability details that AMD had not fully disclosed when it previewed RDNA 4 and the RX 9070 family around CES in January.

This distinction matters: February 28 was the date for the detailed announcement. It was not the date consumers could buy the cards. AMD subsequently announced retail availability beginning March 6, 2025.

The 32GB rumor was about one specific card

The speculation concerned a possible 32GB version of the Radeon RX 9070 XT. Reports suggested that a higher-memory model might appeal to users running demanding games, artificial-intelligence workloads or creative applications. However, the available evidence showed this was speculation—not an AMD-confirmed product plan.

Frank Azor, AMD’s chief architect of Gaming Solutions and Gaming Marketing, addressed the claim directly. His statement was narrow: the 9070 XT card is not coming in 32 GB. In other words, AMD ruled out a 32GB RX 9070 XT configuration.

That statement should not be expanded into a blanket declaration that no future Radeon product could ever have 32GB. It did not rule out a different RX 9000-series model, a later product, an unreleased successor or a professional Radeon PRO card. Consumer gaming GPUs and professional workstation products are separate categories with different drivers, pricing and workloads.

Coverage of the rumor also should not confuse memory capacity with memory type. The released RX 9070 XT uses GDDR6, not GDDR7, with 16GB on a 256-bit memory interface.

What ultimately launched

AMD’s February 28 announcement confirmed two initial consumer cards: the Radeon RX 9070 XT and Radeon RX 9070. Both launched with 16GB of GDDR6 memory.

The cards also include 64MB of Infinity Cache. AMD later expanded the consumer family with the Radeon RX 9060 XT, including a 16GB version. Official AMD consumer materials described the RX 9000 lineup as offering up to 16GB of video memory.

The $599 and $549 figures were AMD’s launch suggested prices in February 2025. They are not guarantees of current prices for every board partner model or retailer listing.

Why buyers cared about 32GB

Video-memory capacity can matter when a workload needs to keep large assets in memory. Higher capacity may help with high-resolution texture packs, heavily modded games, local AI models, 3D rendering, video production and some professional applications.

But VRAM capacity is not a performance ranking by itself. Frame rates and application performance also depend on the GPU’s compute resources, memory bandwidth, architecture, drivers, software support and price. A 32GB card with weaker overall hardware would not automatically outperform a faster 16GB card.

For gaming

For many 1440p gaming builds, 16GB is a substantial capacity and the GPU’s actual rendering performance may matter more. Some 4K games, extreme texture settings and heavily modded titles can place greater pressure on VRAM, but whether 16GB is sufficient depends on the specific game, settings and target frame rate. It is not accurate to say that 32GB is necessary for ordinary gaming.

For AI and professional workloads

Capacity becomes more important when a model, scene or project cannot fit in available VRAM. Buyers using local AI, rendering or certified professional software should evaluate the software’s memory requirements and benchmark the exact workload. A professional Radeon PRO card may be a more appropriate comparison than a consumer RX card, but more memory alone does not make it a direct gaming substitute.

The timeline, in context

  1. January 6, 2025: AMD previewed RDNA 4 and the RX 9000 family around CES 2025.
  2. February 13, 2025: AMD announced the February 28 reveal livestream, while Azor rejected the 32GB RX 9070 XT rumor.
  3. February 28, 2025: AMD officially unveiled the RX 9070 XT and RX 9070, including specifications, suggested pricing and software details such as RX 9000-exclusive FSR 4 at launch.
  4. March 6, 2025: Retail availability began.

This also explains why the original “finally confirms” framing made sense as a February 13, 2025 news headline but should not be presented as a current announcement. The reveal and initial launch are historical events.

What this means for a purchase decision

  • Considering the RX 9070 XT: treat it as a 16GB consumer gaming card. Do not wait for a 32GB version based on the rumor; AMD explicitly ruled out that configuration.
  • Want lower power use or a lower entry price: the RX 9070 retains 16GB while having a lower launch suggested price and lower total board power.
  • Want 16GB at a lower performance tier: the RX 9060 XT 16GB is the more affordable class of option, though it is not intended to deliver RX 9070 XT-level performance.
  • Need more than 16GB: compare actual higher-memory consumer or professional products for the workload rather than assuming a future RX 9070 XT will appear.
  • Comparing costs: check the complete build budget, including power-supply capacity, case clearance and cooling. Also distinguish AMD’s launch suggested price from the current price of a particular partner card.

AMD’s official RX 9070 XT specifications, February 28 launch announcement and official launch document provide the clearest record of the final specifications and availability.
