DDR4 and DDR5 RAM Prices Have Exploded: Why Memory Costs 2x or More—and What Buyers Should Do

Many DDR4 and DDR5 memory kits now cost twice—or several times—their recent lows. Here is what is driving the shortage and how buyers can respond.

Yes, the RAM price shock is real—but “all memory has doubled” is too broad. As of August 18, 2026, many consumer DDR4 and DDR5 kits cost at least twice their recent lows, while some individual products have risen several times over. A tracked 64GB DDR5-6000 kit, for example, reached $819 versus a previous low of $159. Common 32GB DDR4 kits that sold for roughly $60–$90 in October 2025 were selling for about $150–$180 by January 2026.

The practical result is uncomfortable: DDR4 is no longer automatically the budget choice, DDR5 prices are being squeezed by AI and server demand, and waiting may or may not save money. The right decision depends on whether you are repairing an existing PC, building a new system, or buying memory for a workload that genuinely needs more capacity.

The short answer

  • Many kits have doubled or more from recent lows. Some tracked products have increased three, four, or even five times.
  • DDR4 is expensive for a different reason than DDR5. Manufacturers are reducing legacy DDR4 supply while millions of older systems still need it.
  • DDR5 is being competed away by servers and AI infrastructure. Cloud providers are placing large orders for conventional server DDR5, while AI systems also consume high-bandwidth memory and related manufacturing capacity.
  • Prices could remain elevated through 2026 and into 2027. Industry forecasts point to delayed capacity relief, although affordability constraints could slow the rate of increase.
  • Do not buy at any price. Buy when memory is necessary, compare total platform cost, and avoid paying a scarcity premium for cosmetic features or marginal speed gains.

How large is the increase?

There is no single “RAM price.” The market includes DRAM chips, short-term spot quotations, negotiated contract prices, module-manufacturer costs, and the retail kits consumers buy. Those prices do not move in lockstep.

Retail comparisons also depend on capacity, speed, timings, RGB lighting, seller, country, stock, and the baseline chosen. A product can be hundreds of percent above an unusually low sale without being hundreds of percent above its normal long-term price.

Example Earlier reference Later or current reference What it shows
64GB DDR5-6000 $159 previous low $819 tracked price A rise of more than five times for that tracked configuration
32GB DDR4 kits About $60–$90 in October 2025 About $150–$180 by January 2026 DDR4 also experienced sharp inflation
32GB Corsair DDR5-6000 RGB $599.99 listed price $469.99 with a reported promotion A temporary discount can still leave a kit extremely expensive

These figures come from product tracking and dated retail reports, not a universal average for every kit. See Tom’s Hardware’s 2026 RAM price index and the reported Corsair promotion.

Why DDR4 became expensive

DDR4 is older, but older does not always mean cheaper. Memory manufacturers are gradually transitioning production toward newer and more profitable products. As suppliers reduce or withdraw some DDR4 capacity, supply can fall faster than demand.

That demand remains substantial because existing PCs cannot simply be upgraded from DDR4 to DDR5. A DDR4 motherboard requires DDR4 modules; replacing the memory standard generally means replacing the motherboard and often the CPU as well. Owners of older gaming PCs, office machines, and workstations are therefore competing for a shrinking supply of compatible parts.

TrendForce reported tightening DDR4 supply in the second half of 2025 and described a structural shortage as suppliers reduced output while server and consumer demand continued. Earlier, it forecast that consumer DDR4 prices could rise by more than 40% quarter over quarter in Q3 2025, citing the generation transition, end-of-life announcements, and restocking.

This is why the usual advice—“choose DDR4 because it is the cheap option”—has become unreliable. A limited-capacity DDR4 upgrade can cost enough that a complete newer platform deserves consideration.

Why DDR5 is also inflated

DDR5 is facing demand from the newest PCs at the same time that data-center customers are absorbing more memory. AI servers need large quantities of conventional server DDR5 in addition to specialized high-bandwidth memory, or HBM, used alongside AI accelerators.

Cloud providers and other large customers can secure supply through large orders and longer-term agreements. Suppliers consequently have an incentive to prioritize server and AI-related products over consumer desktop DIMMs. That does not mean AI companies literally consume all consumer RAM production. It means overlapping manufacturing resources and supplier allocation decisions make ordinary memory harder and more expensive to obtain.

TrendForce has described server demand displacing other applications, while its March 2026 analysis linked AI-server procurement and long-term agreements to tighter supply.

Other forces pushing up retail prices

AI is the biggest current demand catalyst, but it is not the only explanation. The price shock is the result of several forces operating together:

  1. AI and data-center expansion: More servers require more memory, including HBM and conventional DDR5.
  2. Reduced DDR4 production: Suppliers are managing a transition away from a legacy standard.
  3. Inventory discipline: Manufacturers and distributors may avoid building large stocks after earlier periods of oversupply.
  4. PC restocking: System builders and manufacturers may place replenishment orders at the same time.
  5. Scarcity repricing: Module makers and retailers adjust limited inventory faster than consumers can find substitutes.
  6. Regional costs: Currency movements, tariffs, shipping, distribution, and local inventory affect the final price.
  7. Advance purchasing: Large customers may buy ahead of need, making short-term availability worse.

A wholesale component price is therefore not the same as the price of a complete retail kit. Retail prices can lag contract prices, overshoot them, or vary dramatically between regions and sellers.

Are prices still rising?

The evidence available by August 18, 2026 points to continued elevated prices and further upward pressure, but possibly at a slower pace.

A July report citing TrendForce said the average fixed transaction price for a commodity 8Gb PC DDR4 component had reached $21, up from $13 in Q1 2026 and approximately eight times its year-earlier level. That is a component-market figure—not the price of a 32GB or 64GB retail kit. The same report said Q3 increases could moderate to roughly 13%–18% as consumer affordability began limiting demand. Read the Seoul Economic Daily report for the attribution and qualification.

TrendForce’s February 2026 outlook projected record-high quarterly increases across memory categories because of the widening supply-demand gap. Those forecasts describe market direction, not a guaranteed price for a particular retail SKU.

Could RAM prices get worse?

The strongest argument for continued pressure is the time required to add semiconductor capacity. TrendForce said meaningful expansion might not provide relief until late 2027 or 2028. An August 2026 TechRadar report on Samsung’s commentary likewise described constraints potentially becoming more severe in 2027 and not easing materially before 2028.

That is a risk outlook, not an inevitability. Prices could stabilize sooner if high prices destroy demand, inventories normalize, AI spending slows, new capacity arrives faster than expected, or suppliers change their allocation decisions. The most defensible near-term scenarios are:

Should you buy DDR4 or move to DDR5?

Keep DDR4 when you already own the platform

DDR4 is usually the practical choice when your current motherboard requires it and the upgrade solves an immediate problem. It can make sense for a repair, a modest capacity increase, or a system with unusually valuable hardware that would be expensive to replace.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before buying, compare the compatible kit’s price with the cost of a new motherboard, CPU, and DDR5 memory. If the old processor is already limiting your workload, spending heavily on DDR4 may only delay a replacement you will need soon.

Consider DDR5 for a new build

If you need a motherboard, CPU, and memory, compare the complete platform rather than the price per gigabyte of DDR4 alone. DDR5 may provide a better upgrade path even when the memory kit itself is expensive. This is particularly relevant if you need 64GB or more and high-capacity DDR4 kits carry a disproportionate premium.

DDR4 and DDR5 are not interchangeable. A DDR5-capable CPU does not make a DDR4 motherboard compatible with DDR5, and physical keying prevents normal installation in the wrong slot type.

Buying advice by situation

Buy now if

  • Your system is unstable, unusable, or failing a required workload.
  • You have already committed to a platform and found compatible, returnable stock.
  • You need memory for paid work, virtualization, content creation, or a time-sensitive project.

Wait if

  • Your current capacity is adequate.
  • The upgrade is discretionary.
  • The listing is far above its recent price history and the purchase can be postponed.
  • You are willing to monitor prices rather than accept a temporary scarcity premium.

Buy a smaller amount only when the upgrade path is clear

A smaller kit can reduce the immediate bill if your motherboard has free slots and your current workload does not need maximum capacity. However, adding a second kit later can create stability problems, especially at high DDR5 speeds. One matched kit with the desired final capacity is generally safer than combining unrelated kits.

  • AMD EXPO & Intel XMP 3.0 Compatible Only: Dual memory profiles allow you to easily select optimized settings for your platform, whether you’re running an AMD or Intel processor
  • Onboard Voltage Regulation: Enables easier, more finely-tuned, and more stable overclocking through CORSAIR iCUE software than previous generation motherboard control
  • Maximum Bandwidth and Tight Response Times: Optimized for peak performance on the latest AMD and Intel DDR5 motherboards
  • Hand-Sorted, Tightly-Screened Memory Chips: Ensure consistent high-frequency performance with aggressive timing options

What to check before purchasing

  • Memory type: Confirm DDR4 or DDR5, and distinguish desktop UDIMM, laptop SO-DIMM, and server RDIMM.
  • Capacity and layout: Check total capacity, number of modules, and whether your motherboard supports the module density.
  • Compatibility: Verify the motherboard manual or QVL where stability matters.
  • Profile support: Check for AMD EXPO or Intel XMP if you intend to use the rated speed.
  • Specifications: Compare speed and timings, but do not pay a large premium for tiny latency differences.
  • Features: Non-RGB memory with similar specifications may cost less and perform the same.
  • Seller and returns: Confirm whether the retailer or a marketplace seller is fulfilling the order, and review the warranty and return terms.
  • Price history: A coupon or inflated “was” price does not prove a genuine bargain. Tools such as RAMScan and RamRadar can help, but verify shipping, stock, seller, and final checkout price.

If you mix memory kits

Mixing kits can work at default settings, but high-speed DDR5 is more sensitive to the motherboard and processor’s memory controller. Possible symptoms include boot loops, long memory-training delays, application crashes, and intermittent errors.

  1. Update the motherboard firmware.
  2. Install modules in the recommended slots.
  3. Start at JEDEC or default speed.
  4. Run a memory diagnostic and test the applications that matter to you.
  5. Increase speed gradually only after confirming stability.
  6. Be prepared to reduce frequency or loosen timings.

For workstations, laptops, and used buyers

Workstation users should usually prioritize capacity, validated stability, warranty, and error behavior over gaming-oriented speed or RGB. A conservative 64GB or 96GB configuration may be more useful than a highly overclocked 32GB kit.

Laptop owners must confirm the exact SO-DIMM or soldered-memory situation before shopping. Desktop DDR4 or DDR5 DIMMs are not laptop substitutes.

Used or pulled OEM memory can reduce the cost of an older-system upgrade, but check the exact type, density, voltage, ECC or non-ECC status, seller reputation, and return policy. The lowest sticker price is not a saving if the module is incompatible or cannot be returned.

The personal-finance conclusion

RAM has entered a supply-constrained pricing cycle, but the headline should be read precisely: many tracked consumer kits are at least twice their recent lows, while some individual products have risen several times. DDR4 is being squeezed by falling legacy supply, and DDR5 is competing with server and AI demand.

For an urgent repair or committed build, buy a compatible, returnable kit at a price you can justify. For a discretionary upgrade, waiting and tracking prices is reasonable. In either case, compare total platform cost and workload needs—not just the generation printed on the box.
