Ledger is investigating reports of customer losses, while an on-chain analyst’s estimate puts reported stolen crypto at more than $86 million. That figure is not a Ledger-confirmed tally, and the reporting cited so far does not establish how the funds were taken. “Wallet tampering” remains a possibility under investigation, not a confirmed cause.
What is known about the reported losses?
On October 9, 2026, Unchained reported that on-chain analyst Specter traced addresses said to have received funds from hundreds of wallets reportedly belonging to Ledger users. The reported outflows involved Ethereum, TRON and Bitcoin. Specter estimated losses at more than $86 million.
Unchained described the estimate as unconfirmed and said the posts did not establish how the funds were taken. The cited reports provide no Ledger-verified victim count or independently confirmed final loss total. The $86 million-plus figure should therefore be read as an analyst’s reported estimate, not a confirmed Ledger loss figure.
Does this mean Ledger devices were hacked?
No technical cause has been established in the cited coverage. It does not confirm that Ledger hardware was hacked, that a recovery phrase was extracted, or that a firmware vulnerability was involved. Device tampering, recovery-phrase exposure and malicious transaction signing are possible mechanisms to investigate, not findings that can currently be ranked or presented as the explanation.

Separate reporting by PrimeXBT on October 9 says Ledger was investigating loss reports among Southeast Asian customers who bought through reseller CryptoBilis, and had asked the reseller to halt sales and shipments. The reporting does not establish that all addresses or losses in Specter’s estimate involved CryptoBilis customers. The reseller reports and the broader on-chain estimate should not be treated as one confirmed incident population.
What should CryptoBilis customers do?
PrimeXBT reported that Ledger’s advice differed according to whether a customer had initialized the device. Because the cited report is not a primary Ledger notice, check Ledger’s current official support guidance before acting.

- If you have not set up the device: PrimeXBT reported that buyers should delay setup. Do not initialize it until you have checked current Ledger guidance through an official Ledger channel.
- If you have already set it up: PrimeXBT reported that customers should consider moving assets to a new signer with a newly generated seed. Confirm the current procedure with Ledger and take care not to expose your existing recovery phrase while seeking help.
These reported precautions apply to the CryptoBilis customer situation described by PrimeXBT; the available reporting does not establish that every Ledger user needs the same action. A new signer or seed cannot recover crypto that has already been transferred away.

Ledger said a former employee’s NPMJS account was compromised and malicious package versions 1.1.5, 1.1.6 and 1.1.7 used a rogue WalletConnect project to reroute funds; a genuine fixed version was deployed after discovery.

That historical incident does not establish the cause of the October 2026 reports. The cited current coverage leaves the method of the reported losses unresolved.
