Indian shares fell sharply on Thursday, October 8, 2026: the Sensex closed at 71,593.24, down 1,045.46 points (1.44%), while the Nifty 50 ended at 22,231.80, down 371.25 points (1.64%). The Nifty touched a reported 52-week low of 22,179 during the session. Contemporary coverage cited several possible pressures, but did not establish how much each contributed to the selloff.
How much did the Sensex and Nifty fall?
ANI, in a report republished by WebIndia123 on October 8, 2026, gave these closing levels and daily changes:
| Benchmark | October 8 close | Daily change | Session detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| BSE Sensex | 71,593.24 | Down 1,045.46 points (1.44%) | Previous close: 72,638.70 |
| Nifty 50 | 22,231.80 | Down 371.25 points (1.64%) | Previous close: 22,603.05; reported 52-week low: 22,179 |
The Nifty’s 22,179 figure is the reported intraday low, not its closing level. Both benchmarks finished near the session’s lows, according to the ANI report.
Was the selloff broad across the market?
Yes. The reported declines extended beyond the two headline indices and hit mid-sized and smaller companies, as well as multiple sectors.

- ANI reported the Nifty Midcap 50 fell 2.71%. The Economic Times separately reported that the Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 fell by as much as 3%.
- The Nifty Metal index lost more than 3%; The Economic Times also reported a fall of more than 3% in Nifty Realty.
- The Economic Times put the loss in BSE-listed market capitalization at more than ₹10 lakh crore.
- The Economic Times reported NSE market breadth of 2,950 declining shares, 660 advancing shares and 112 unchanged. That is a count of shares, not a measure of the index-point loss.
These indicators show that weakness was widespread, though they do not identify a single cause for the decline.
Why did the market fall on October 8?
Contemporary reports and quoted market commentators pointed to several pressures occurring at the same time. They did not provide a causal breakdown or establish a definitive ranking of the factors.

Foreign investor selling
The Economic Times reported, citing provisional data, that foreign investors were net sellers of more than ₹6,121 crore on Wednesday, October 7, and had sold nearly ₹57,000 crore over nine consecutive sessions through that Wednesday. These are reported provisional flows, not independently confirmed here against a primary exchange filing. The figures describe reported selling before Thursday’s session; they should not be read as Thursday’s flow totals.
Oil prices and global markets
Reports cited higher global oil prices, with Brent crude quoted above $102–$103 and around $104 per barrel, alongside weak global market cues. Those oil-price references are contemporaneous figures in the coverage, not a separate verified closing benchmark for the day.

The reports also cited elevated US Treasury yields and concern about possible Federal Reserve tightening, as well as worries about India’s monetary-policy stance and borrowing conditions. ANI’s report said the Reserve Bank of India had raised the repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50% and shifted toward “calibrated tightening.” That specific October 2026 policy detail is attributable to the contemporary report; the official RBI result identified in the available coverage concerned an older decision and does not independently verify this reported move.
Technical support levels
Coverage said selling intensified after technical support levels gave way. That is one reported description of how the decline unfolded, not proof that technical trading independently caused the broader market fall.

What did market commentators say?
Ajit Mishra, SVP, Research at Religare Broking, told ANI that the indices remained under pressure after a weak opening and settled close to the day’s lows, describing sustained selling across the market. Analyst Vipin Dixena cautioned against treating oversold conditions as an automatic buying signal. That is an attributed market opinion, not personal investment advice or a prediction of what prices would do next.

The closing percentage change captures the day’s move in each benchmark; the Nifty’s reported intraday low shows how far it fell at its weakest point. Breadth, market-cap losses and sector declines add context about the spread of the selloff. None of these measures, individually or together, proves which reported macroeconomic or flow factor drove the decline.
