USDA raised its forecast for U.S. corn production in the 2024/2025 crop year by 17 million bushels in its October 2024 World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) report. The new estimate was 15.203 billion bushels, based on a higher projected yield; harvested area was unchanged.
These are historical forecasts reported in October 2024, not current estimates or final production figures. The figures and report language below are from Successful Farming’s October 11, 2024 coverage.
How much did USDA raise its corn production estimate?
The October outlook put 2024/2025 U.S. corn production at 15.203 billion bushels, up from 15.186 billion in September—a month-to-month increase of 17 million bushels. The September figure was also the trade expectation for October reported by Successful Farming, which identified Bloomberg as the source of trade expectations.
The October forecast was therefore higher than the article’s stated trade expectation for production. It remained a forecast, not a measurement of the crop ultimately harvested.

What changed in yield and harvested area?
USDA’s reported yield forecast rose to 183.8 bushels per acre from 183.6 in September. The article’s cited trade expectation was 183.4 bushels per acre. Harvested area was unchanged at 82.7 million acres.
USDA attributed the 17-million-bushel production increase to the 0.2-bushel-per-acre increase in projected yield. As Successful Farming reproduced the October WASDE language: “Corn production is forecast at 15.2 billion bushels, up 17 million from last month on a 0.2-bushel increase in yield to 183.8 bushels per acre.”

What did the report say about use and ending stocks?
The report’s balance sheet showed slightly higher total use, at 15 billion bushels, reflecting greater exports. Projected ending stocks—the supply expected to remain at the close of the marketing year—fell by 58 million bushels from September.

The article also reproduced USDA’s summary that, “With supply falling and use rising, ending stocks are cut 58 million bushels to 2 billion.” Its comparison table gives the October figure as 1.999 billion bushels, the more precise value behind the rounded “2 billion.”

What did the estimate mean for markets?
On report day, commentators quoted by Successful Farming described the outlook as neutral or a non-event; one characterized its tone as leaning bearish. Those were contemporaneous market opinions, not USDA conclusions, and they should not be read as a description of market conditions today.
The report also included forecasts for other crops: soybean production of 4.582 billion bushels, compared with 4.586 billion in September, and a soybean yield of 53.1 bushels per acre. It projected U.S. soybean ending stocks of 550 million bushels and wheat ending stocks of 812 million. These figures provide context for that report, but the corn forecast was the change at the center of the headline.
