Start with the model year on the title, not the calendar
“Three years old” changes with the date, so base the decision on the model year printed on the title. The recall discussed below covers certain 2021–2025 Sportster S motorcycles, which means a 2021, 2023, or 2024 bike can fall in scope. The VIN, not the model year, determines whether a particular motorcycle is covered.
What changed for 2025, and what the sources do not show
Harley-Davidson’s U.S. 2025 Sportster S model page is the clearest documented source for current-generation specifications. The figures below are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results. The earlier-year column is deliberately limited: the 2024 manufacturer page and owner’s manuals could not be checked for this article, so confirm any year-specific figure in the owner’s manual for that exact model year before relying on it.

The one documented change is rear suspension travel, which Harley-Davidson says rose from 2 inches to 3.2 inches for 2025. Whether that difference matters is a question for the rider. The manufacturer figures do not, on their own, establish comfort, reliability, or value.

Recall 25V590: the check that matters most
NHTSA recall 25V590 covers certain 2021–2025 Harley-Davidson RH1250S (Sportster S) motorcycles because the upper triple clamp may fracture. NHTSA’s recall acknowledgement, dated September 15, 2025, states: “The upper triple clamp may fracture.” Dealers will replace the clamp at no charge. The agency’s Part 573 report lists 8,422 potentially involved motorcycles, with a production window of May 18, 2021 to September 6, 2025. That figure is the recall population, not a count of confirmed defective clamps.
What a fracture could mean
The report describes potential loss of control and increased crash risk if the upper triple clamp fractures. Owners may notice a visible failure or a change in handling, but a bike that looks and rides normally has not been cleared. A seller’s assurance or a quick visual check does not replace a VIN check or dealer confirmation.

How to verify a specific bike
- Record the VIN from the seller’s title or registration, and confirm it matches the motorcycle before doing anything else.
- Run that VIN through NHTSA’s recall lookup and note whether campaign 25V590 appears.
- Call a Harley-Davidson dealer, give the VIN, and ask them to confirm the campaign 25V590 status and whether the upper triple clamp remedy has been completed.
- Get the dealer’s confirmation in writing or as a printed service record, and make it part of the sale terms if the seller says the work was done.
If the remedy is not documented as complete, ask the seller to have a dealer perform it before the sale, since the remedy is dealer-performed at no charge. If the seller will not do that, factor the repair time into your offer.
Used-bike checks beyond the recall
- Service records: look for maintenance that matches the interval schedule in the owner’s manual for that exact model year. This article does not list intervals, because a model-specific maintenance schedule was not established from the available sources.
- Drop and crash history: ask directly whether the bike has been down, and inspect the front end, including the triple clamp area, for scuffs, replaced parts, or repairs.
- Modifications: exhaust, suspension, or electronics changes can affect insurance and resale value. Ask for a list of every changed part and whether the original parts were kept.
- Independent inspection: a pre-purchase inspection by a technician you choose is worth the fee, especially when the seller’s paperwork is thin.
Price: what the numbers do and do not tell you
The 2025 U.S. starting MSRP is $15,999. That is a new-bike list price for the 2025 model, not a used valuation and not a current offer. This article does not establish a fair current used price for any model year. Compare the seller’s full delivered price, including fees and dealer add-ons, against comparable bikes of the same year, mileage, and condition in your area, and use the MSRP only as a reference for what the model cost new.

Online buyers often ask whether a 2021 Sportster S with 2,133 miles is still a good buy, and whether the 2023 and 2024 models differ in any meaningful way. Those are individual forum questions rather than consensus, and the answer depends on the specific bike’s condition, records, and price.

The 2025 rear-travel increase is the only documented suspension change in the available sources. Whether it improves comfort for you is a road-test question. The 28.9-inch laden seat height listed for 2025 is worth checking against your inseam and how you plan to ride. No independent ride or reliability test was found for this article, so any claim about ride quality should come from your own test ride rather than from manufacturer description.
