A verified top ten of U.S. airlines by flight count cannot be established from the available comparable figures. The Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) reports 8.777 million departures from U.S. airports in the 12 months ending June 2026, but its available carrier snapshot supplies a comparable figure for only American Airlines: 968,000 departures, ranking third among 71 passenger carriers. The BTS carrier list often mistaken for a flight ranking is instead based on domestic revenue passenger miles.
Why a reliable top-ten ranking is not available
“Largest by flights” needs a consistent definition: departures performed or scheduled, the geographic scope, whether scheduled and nonscheduled service are included, and one shared reporting period. BTS T-100 reporting distinguishes scheduled from nonscheduled activity and domestic, international, and system totals. A ranking assembled from different scopes or measures would not be a valid comparison.
The available BTS data establishes a national departure total and one carrier-level figure, but not comparable departure counts for ten airlines. It therefore does not support a top-ten list. In particular, a list ranked by passenger volume or market share cannot fill that gap.
What the BTS figures do establish
| Measure | Figure | Scope and period |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. departures | 8.777 million | BTS total for the 12 months ending June 2026. |
| American Airlines departures | 968,000; ranked third | BTS carrier snapshot for U.S. airports over the 12 months ending June 2026; third among 71 passenger carriers. |
| American Airlines flights in the on-time summary | 988,000; ranked third | BTS on-time summary for August 2025 through July 2026; a different period and measure from the June-ending carrier snapshot. |
The two American Airlines counts should not be combined or treated as competing estimates for the same period: their reporting windows differ. The 968,000 figure is the one that aligns with the June 2026 national departure total.

Why the BTS carrier list is not a flights ranking
BTS’s domestic carrier list is organized by revenue passenger miles, a measure of passenger traffic that accounts for distance traveled. It is not ordered by the number of departures. An airline can rank differently by passenger traffic and by flight count, so that list cannot be relabeled as the largest airlines by flights.
What a valid top ten would need to compare
For a defensible ranking, every carrier would need a count for the same 12-month period, with the same geography and service definition. Each entry would also need to clarify whether the data counts domestic operations or systemwide service and whether it covers scheduled flights only or includes nonscheduled operations.

Carrier naming matters, too. If a dataset combines affiliated operating airlines under a marketed parent, the ranking should state that aggregation rule and apply it consistently. Without comparable carrier-level departure counts and a transparent aggregation method, a numbered list would suggest precision the data does not support.
