The phrase can mean current investment bankers, or people whose careers included banking but who later built fortunes through private-equity firms or financial-information businesses. The examples below show why that distinction matters—and why dated wealth estimates should not be mistaken for a verified ranking.
Why there is no reliable top-ten list here
“Investment banker” does not define a consistent group for a wealth ranking. It could mean people currently working in investment banking, or anyone who worked in the field before moving into another business. Those definitions can produce different candidates. The available profiles also report estimates from different dates and, in one case, different estimate types. They do not establish ten comparable people, net-worth figures and ranks on the same date.
A credible ranking would need to state its eligibility rule, use one wealth source for every person, and compare estimates from a single specified date. Without those choices, placing ten people in order would suggest a precision the evidence does not support.
What the available examples show
These five people illustrate the boundary between an investment-banking career and wealth later built or held through other businesses. They are examples, not a ranking.
#1 Best Overall
| Person | Banking connection and later business | Dated wealth estimate |
|---|---|---|
| Leon Black | Spent much of his early career at Drexel Burnham Lambert and eventually led mergers and acquisitions. After Drexel’s 1990 bankruptcy, he founded Apollo with colleagues. | Forbes displayed a real-time estimate of $14.6 billion on September 15, 2026, and a separate 2026 annual-list estimate of $12.2 billion dated March 10, 2026. These are distinct snapshots and estimate types, not interchangeable figures. Forbes profile |
| Marc Rowan | Previously worked as an investment banker at Drexel Burnham Lambert and co-founded Apollo, where he is CEO. | Bloomberg displayed $10.9 billion on May 11, 2026. This is a dated profile estimate, not an October 2026 ranking value. Bloomberg profile |
| Michael Bloomberg | Started on Wall Street in an entry-level job at Salomon Brothers in 1966, then co-founded Bloomberg LP. | Forbes displayed a real-time estimate of $94.9 billion on September 10, 2026. His fortune is associated with a financial-information business, rather than conventional banker pay. Forbes profile |
| Stephen Schwarzman | Bloomberg identifies him as Blackstone’s chairman, co-founder and largest shareholder. The profile says his wealth includes stock sales, dividends and compensation. | Bloomberg displayed $46.5 billion on May 15, 2026. His inclusion depends on whether the ranking counts people whose wealth is tied to a private-equity firm. Bloomberg profile |
| Michael Milken | Joined what became Drexel Burnham Lambert in 1969 and expanded the high-yield bond market. His later investments included private equity, hedge funds, venture capital and asset management. | Forbes displayed a real-time estimate of $8.6 billion on September 10, 2026. Forbes profile |
How to read billionaire net-worth estimates
These amounts are estimates, not audited statements of personal wealth. Bloomberg describes its Billionaires Index as a daily ranking, updated after each New York trading day. Its methodology says public-company stakes are valued at the latest closing price and converted to U.S. dollars at current exchange rates; private-company holdings require valuation estimates. As a result, public stakes can move with share prices, while private-company estimates depend on valuation assumptions. Bloomberg Billionaires Index methodology
Forbes also displays real-time estimates on its profiles. Leon Black’s two Forbes figures show why the date and type of estimate matter: a real-time profile value and an annual-list value can differ, even for the same person. A number without its source, date and estimate type should not be treated as a stable personal balance sheet.

Any future ranking should explain who qualifies before naming a first-place candidate. A narrow rule could include people currently employed in investment banking. A broader career-based rule could include former bankers who went on to found or lead financial firms. That broader group may include people whose wealth primarily comes from owning those businesses—not from banking salaries.
For a meaningful comparison, a list should disclose each candidate’s qualifying banking experience, main source of wealth, estimate source and valuation date. It should also distinguish an individual estimate from family wealth when the source does so. Without these definitions and a common valuation date, the examples above cannot establish who belongs in a top ten or how they should be ordered.
