They do not substantiate the $1 million figure in the supplied headline. Reports also differed on whether he was asked or forced to resign, or whether the departure was mutually agreed.
How much was Ian Johnson paid when he left?
ABC News reported a $420,000 payout. On 1 May 2013, it said Johnson had been asked to leave three years before his contract expired, resulting in that compensation payment (ABC News, 1 May 2013). A follow-up report on 7 May likewise said he had three years left and would receive $420,000 after being forced to resign (ABC News, 7 May 2013).
The available reporting supports $420,000, not $1 million. It does not establish the precise identity or event behind the headline’s $1 million claim, so that figure should not be attributed to this Johnson case as fact.
Was Johnson sacked, asked to resign, or did he leave by agreement?
The accounts used different descriptions, which should not be treated as interchangeable. ABC described Johnson as asked to leave and later as forced to resign. The West Australian reported on 30 April 2013 that the government characterized the departure as “mutually agreed,” while also reporting the $420,000 payout and three years left on his contract (The West Australian, 30 April 2013).

These contemporaneous news accounts do not include the contract or an official payment record that would settle the formal separation terms. The evidence therefore supports describing a reported compensation payout following Johnson’s departure, but does not establish that his contract was formally “terminated” in a particular legal sense.

Premier Colin Barnett said the government wanted “to take a stronger direction, a new direction in corrective services,” and said the Banksia Hill Detention Centre riot had nothing to do with Johnson’s departure, according to ABC News. Incoming Corrective Services Minister Joe Francis described himself as “a fresh minister in a fresh government with new ideas on how Corrections should be managed in WA,” The West Australian reported.

Johnson, in the 7 May ABC report, said: “I don’t leave with regrets that I didn’t do enough or give it my best shot.” The statements give the public explanations and reactions reported at the time; they do not establish a separate cause for the payment.
