12 Most Lucrative Contracts in Football History? What the Reported Figures Show

Reported contract totals for Messi, Ronaldo and Mahomes are striking, but they use different measures. Here’s what the figures establish—and why they do not support a verified top 12.

There is no defensible, verified list of the 12 most lucrative contracts in football history in the available evidence. “Football” may mean soccer or the NFL, and the reported totals use different measures. The best-known figures include Lionel Messi’s reported $674 million Barcelona deal, Cristiano Ronaldo’s reported Al-Nassr deals of $536.3 million and $710 million, and Patrick Mahomes’ revised NFL contract, reported at $504.75 million before incentives. Those numbers are not directly comparable, and they do not establish a reliable cross-code ranking.

Why there is no reliable top 12

A ranking needs a consistent definition of “lucrative.” Total nominal contract value, average annual value, guaranteed money at signing, maximum value with incentives, and cash actually received are different measures. A headline total may include signing bonuses but exclude options, buyouts, endorsements, or other commercial arrangements. It also may not reflect tax treatment or money ultimately paid.

There is a second problem: “football” can mean association football (soccer), American football, or both. The available reported examples span soccer and the NFL, but they do not verify 12 contracts on a shared basis. The figures below are notable reported values, not ranks and not a complete top 12.

What the standout reported figures say

Player and deal Reported value What the figure means and how to read it
Lionel Messi, FC Barcelona, 2017–2021 $674 million A compiled list of large sports contracts reports this as the face value of a four-year deal. Its stated method includes signing bonuses but excludes options, buyouts, and endorsements. The figure was not independently verified against the contract. AFP separately reported potential earnings of €138 million per season, including salary and add-ons; that is not the same as verified cash salary.
Cristiano Ronaldo, Al-Nassr, 2023–2025 $536,336,818 Reported by the same compiled list as a nominal deal value. It was not independently verified here against club records or primary contract documents.
Cristiano Ronaldo, Al-Nassr, 2025–2027 $710,030,000 A newer deal value reported by that compiled list. Treat it as a reported figure, not a confirmed amount paid or a verified guaranteed sum.
Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs $504.75 million; up to $522.25 million NFL.com reported the revised contract at $504.75 million, with a possible $522.25 million through incentives and escalators. The $64 million average annual value begins in 2027. These are reported contract-value measures, not a statement that the entire total was guaranteed at signing.

The compiled list describes its figures as nominal face values and warns that they may not align on pre-tax versus post-tax reporting. That matters especially in cross-country comparisons: a larger quoted total does not by itself mean a player will take home more money.

Why a headline contract value is not the same as guaranteed money

In the NFL, a contract can contain guarantees for different risks. NFL Football Operations explains that money is fully guaranteed at signing when it is protected for skill, salary-cap, and injury reasons. A guarantee that applies only in some circumstances is not equivalent to that full protection. Mahomes’ reported headline total should therefore not be described as fully guaranteed at signing.

Incentives and escalators can also make a deal’s maximum value larger than its base reported total. The $522.25 million figure for Mahomes is a potential value through those mechanisms; the $64 million average is reported to begin in 2027. Neither figure means that amount was necessarily paid in cash in a particular year.

Messi’s Inter Miami figures measure different things

Messi’s MLS salary data should not be confused with the reported total value of his Inter Miami agreement. AFP’s 2024 report on MLS Players Association data gave Messi’s guaranteed compensation as $20,446,667 for the 2024 reporting period; it excluded commercial endorsements and sponsorships. A 2025 law review article summarized reports that the Inter Miami agreement could be worth up to $150 million over 2.5 years, with equity and commercial-sharing components, while noting that official contract details had not been publicized. These are separate measures, not competing estimates of a single published salary figure.

How to compare football contracts fairly

  • Choose the code. Keep soccer and NFL rankings separate unless every deal is assessed using the same value measure and currency basis.
  • Choose one value measure. State whether the ranking uses total nominal value, average annual value, guaranteed money at signing, maximum value including incentives, or cash paid.
  • Identify what is included. Note signing bonuses, options, buyouts, endorsements, equity, image rights, and commercial-sharing arrangements where the source establishes them.
  • State the currency and tax basis. A reported conversion or a post-tax figure should not be presented as directly equivalent to a pre-tax amount in another currency.
  • Separate guarantees from potential value. In NFL deals, specify whether guarantees cover skill, cap, and injury, or only some of those risks; distinguish incentives and escalators from guaranteed compensation.
  • Check the source and status. A club or league release, contract document, or strong reporting is a better foundation than a compiled list. Label unconfirmed totals as reported, and do not imply they were all collected.

Until those choices are applied consistently to 12 individually verified deals, a numbered “most lucrative” list would suggest more certainty than the figures support.
