Without the original, its wording, date and meaning cannot be confirmed, so this article does not offer an interpretation of it. What can be documented is the ownership dispute that shaped the Sheffield United sale McCabe was reportedly considering, and the reasons that dispute matters to anyone reading takeover news.
What we could and could not verify about the quote
The remark is a headline attribution, and it is the only link we found between McCabe and the Liverpool and Arsenal comparison. Searches did not surface the original source, the speaking context, or the date. That matters because a short phrase like this can mean very different things depending on whether it was a point about club finances, fan ownership, a legal fight, or a rival’s stadium plans. Until the full text is available, any explanation would be guesswork presented as fact.
Readers searching for what McCabe meant should treat the phrase as unexplained. The rest of this article covers the documented events around the takeover, which are well sourced and do not depend on that remark.
The Sheffield United ownership dispute, step by step
The clearest account we found is a Sheffield United News report published on 1 January 2021. It describes the sequence below. Each step is as the report states it; none has been independently re-checked against court records for this article.

- Lightweight, Classic fit, Double-needle sleeve and bottom hem
- A conditional sale was agreed. McCabe agreed a deal with Alan Pace and Dave Checketts under which they would take over Sheffield United if McCabe won his ownership legal dispute with Prince Abdullah.
- McCabe lost the case. According to the report, the outcome went against him.
- Prince Abdullah gained sole control. The report says Prince Abdullah was given sole control of the club in September 2019.
- The prospective investors moved on. Because the sale depended on the legal result, Pace and Checketts did not proceed with the takeover.
The conditional structure is the most useful detail for readers. A deal that is contingent on a court ruling is only as firm as that ruling, and the buyer’s interest can lapse once the condition fails.
Where ALK Capital fits
The same retrospective report notes that ALK Capital later completed a takeover at Burnley. The report places that event in the wider account of the Sheffield United saga. It does not, in the material we reviewed, set out a full comparison of ALK’s approach at the two clubs, and this article does not draw one.

The 2008 comment on the economy, a different context
A Sports Business Journal report dated 13 October 2008 places McCabe in a debate about English football club ownership during a downturn. It attributes to him the statement: “There is a major recession in the UK and I don’t say this lightly. It is major and I believe times will be tough for the next five years.” The report identifies him as Sheffield United chairman at the time.
This comment is about the economic climate, not about takeovers, and it is not an explanation of the Liverpool and Arsenal remark. It is useful only as a dated sign of the financial pressures that clubs were discussing in 2008.

How to read takeover stories like this one
Stories about football club sales often combine legal disputes, conditional offers and changing buyers. The following checks help separate what is established from what is speculation.
- Find the date of each claim. The Sheffield United sequence is documented across reports from different years, so the publication date tells you what was known when.
- Check whether a deal was conditional. A sale that depends on a court outcome can fall away without any new offer being rejected.
- Identify who has legal control. The 2019 change in control is the point that decided the matter, not the later reporting about it.
- Treat short quotes with caution. A headline phrase without its source text can be read in opposite ways. Look for the full interview before accepting an interpretation.
- Separate economic comments from ownership facts. A remark about recession and a remark about a specific takeover answer different questions.
For this story, the verified core is simple: a sale tied to a legal win for McCabe was reportedly agreed, the legal outcome went the other way, Prince Abdullah took sole control in September 2019, and the prospective buyers did not proceed.
