It shows something narrower: specific Trent engine families have faced durability or inspection scrutiny, Rolls-Royce is investing to upgrade engines already in service, and airlines have continued to place Rolls-Royce orders. Any individual “switch” has to be judged airline by airline and engine family by engine family.
Why one headline blurs several different stories
The phrase “switching away from Rolls-Royce” lumps together three separate things: engine programs with reliability questions, a regulatory inspection on one aircraft fleet, and fleet decisions that are rarely reported in a way that shows an airline dropping one engine for another. Each Trent family has a different record and a different set of facts behind it.

Trent 1000: durability concerns and an upgrade programme
The Trent 1000, which powers Boeing 787 aircraft, is the engine family most often associated with durability questions. An industry-association account from IATA describes issues with the engine, but the available sources do not give a date for that account or a full breakdown of affected engine builds, so readers should not treat it as a complete accounting.
Rolls-Royce announced a £1 billion investment in 2023 to upgrade engines already in service, as described in a 2024 company feature. That is a company commitment. The sources reviewed do not measure how much of the upgrade has been delivered or what it has changed in in-service reliability. Separately, Rolls-Royce’s April 2026 trading update cited new Trent 1000 XE orders for eight Boeing 787 aircraft. Those are orders, and they show airlines still buying the engine, but they do not show how any individual operator feels about its performance.

Trent XWB-97: a precautionary inspection, not a fleet-wide verdict
The Trent XWB-97 is a separate engine on a separate aircraft. After the September 1, 2024 Cathay Pacific incident, EASA issued a notice that said it “has mandated inspections on the Airbus A350-1000 fleet, powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-97 engines, as a precautionary measure.” The notice is about the A350-1000 with this engine. It does not, in the available sources, establish a defect across other Trent-powered aircraft.
The sources reviewed do not confirm the findings of those inspections or whether the mandate remains in force as of October 2026. Check EASA’s current airworthiness publications and your airline’s notices for the present status before drawing conclusions about a specific aircraft.

Trent 7000 and the A330neo: manufacturer figures
Airbus reported that the A330neo engine had flown more than 2 million flight hours as of March 2024, with dispatch reliability of 99.9% over the same period. Those are Airbus-published figures. The sources do not give the exact definition of dispatch reliability used, and they do not compare the Trent 7000 with other engines under the same conditions. Treat them as a manufacturer’s account of its own product, not as an independent comparison.
Orders point the other way
Rolls-Royce’s 2025 report, covering 2024, recorded a Trent XWB order from IndiGo and orders for Trent 7000 engines. Taken together with the 2026 Trent 1000 XE orders, these show that airlines and aircraft buyers have continued to commit to Rolls-Royce power. They establish that orders were placed. They do not show a market-wide trend in either direction.

Why engine choice is not a simple swap
An airline does not choose an engine in the abstract. Engine options are tied to specific aircraft models. Rolls-Royce identifies the Trent 7000 with the A330neo, so an operator with that aircraft is not free to replace the engine with another brand on an existing airframe. A “switch” therefore usually appears as a different aircraft or a different engine option at the point of a new order, not as a change to aircraft already flying.
Airlines weigh several factors when they buy or replace engines:

- Aircraft availability and the engine options offered for each model
- Reliability and maintenance history
- Time out of service during maintenance
- Support arrangements with the manufacturer and service providers
- Operating economics over the life of the fleet
- Fleet commonality, meaning how many aircraft share the same engine type
The sources reviewed do not include an independent lifetime-cost comparison between Trent families or against competing engines, so no reliable claim can be made about which of these factors drove any particular decision.

Before calling an airline’s choice a switch, confirm five things:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- Crew figures and weighted tires. Machine guns mounted in glass nose.
- Decals included to build one of two variants from the 345th Bomb Group, the Air Apaches.
- Molded in light gray and clear. Paint and glue not included.
- Airline: name the operator and the period in question.
- Aircraft type: identify the model, since engine options differ by airframe.
- Engine selected and engine displaced: both sides of the decision must be documented.
- Decision date: record when the change was announced or ordered.
- Transition or addition: confirm whether the airline is replacing an existing fleet or simply ordering new aircraft with a different engine.
Without all five, a headline about “switching” describes an order mix, not a verified change in fleet strategy.
What this means if you travel or invest
For travelers, the practical point is the A350-1000 inspection mandate. If you are booked on that aircraft type, your airline’s schedule notices are the most reliable place to see any operational effect. For investors, the reliability figures and upgrade commitments discussed above come from the companies themselves, and the orders and trading updates are management statements. Neither should be treated as independent evidence of how the engines perform across the fleet.
