The league reported the winning bid at PKR 1,750,000,000 and said Hyderabad was the city FKS selected from six available options. Official sources confirm his role in that bid. They say much less about his personal background.
What the official announcements establish
The Pakistan Super League (PSL) is run by the Pakistan Cricket Board in partnership with HBL. Its January 9, 2026 announcement, titled “HBL PSL expands with successful Auction and Induction of two new franchises,” is the primary record of the award. It says:
- The franchise: Team 7 was awarded to Hyderabad.
- The winner: FKS Group, led by Fawad Sarwar, placed the winning bid.
- The amount: PKR 1,750,000,000, reported as the auction bid.
- The city choice: the winning bidder selected Hyderabad from six city names that were available.
- The owner: the league identifies Sarwar as the owner of the Hyderabad franchise and prints a statement attributed to him.
The league’s own wording frames the expansion as two new franchises added in 2026. The word “new” in the headline refers to that award, not to a recent change in the team’s ownership.
What the PKR 1.75 billion figure does and does not mean
Most of the confusion around a headline number like this comes from treating it as something it is not. The reported figure is the bid that won the franchise rights at auction. Based on the official announcement, that is the only thing it measures.

- It is not Sarwar’s personal wealth. A franchise bid tells you what a company agreed to pay for a team slot. It says nothing about the net worth of the individual who led the bidder.
- It is not confirmed as an annual fee. The announcement describes the amount as the winning bid. The official sources reviewed do not explain whether any payments recur, how they are scheduled, or what obligations sit alongside them.
- It does not show how the money was financed. Nothing in the official record describes the source of the funds, any partners, or any debt arrangement.
Readers who want to compare this figure with other sports-franchise deals should first confirm whether each reported number is an entry bid, a purchase price, a fee, or a valuation. These terms are often reported interchangeably, and they are not the same thing.
FKS Group and the government’s description
A January 12, 2026 report from Pakistan’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting describes FKS as a Southeast Asian holding company. The same report says Sarwar attended a meeting with the Prime Minister as a representative of one of the firms that won the two new franchise bids. The government framed these participations as a way to encourage foreign investment in the country.

The report does not give Sarwar’s full corporate title, nationality, country of residence, or career history. Nor does it provide a detailed list of FKS’s other businesses. Any description of FKS beyond “holding company” and its role in the PSL bid would go beyond what the official sources state.

“We are delighted to have successfully secured the Hyderabad franchise in the HBL Pakistan Super League. This is an exciting new chapter for FKS Group, and we look forward to bringing our philosophy of professional management, innovation, and excellence of execution to the HBL PSL. The league presents both tremendous opportunity and meaningful challenges, and we are fully committed to building a franchise that represents Hyderabad with pride and contributes positively to the growth of Pakistan cricket across the world.”
This is a statement of intent made when the award was announced. It describes what Sarwar said the group planned to do. It does not show what the franchise has achieved since.

How to evaluate a reported franchise deal
This story is a useful case study for reading any reported sports-team transaction. Before drawing a conclusion from a headline number, ask:
- Is the figure an auction bid, a purchase price, an annual fee, or a valuation?
- Who is the named buyer, and is it a company, a person, or a group?
- What did the league or regulator publish, and on what date?
- Which obligations, payment schedules, or conditions are described, if any?
- Is the number being used to describe the buyer’s personal finances? If so, the reporting needs its own evidence.
Applied to this case, the answers are clear for the first, third, and fifth questions, and largely unknown for the rest.
