There is no confirmed answer. Millwall has not published player wages, so the name people search for depends on which salary website they trust. For 2026/27, Capology names Alfie Doughty as the top earner at an estimated £27,500 a week, while Salary Sport names Romain Esse at an estimated £38,000 a week. Both are third-party estimates, and they conflict.
What the current-season estimates say
Two salary databases publish figures for the 2026/27 season. They do not agree on who is paid the most, and neither figure is an official Millwall disclosure.
| Source | Season | Player named as highest earner | Estimated pay | What the figure covers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Capology | 2026/27 | Alfie Doughty | £27,500 a week (£1,430,000 a year) | Gross fixed salary. Bonuses excluded. Described on the site as an estimate. |
| Salary Sport | 2026/27 | Romain Esse | £38,000 a week | Estimate. The same page lists Alfie Doughty at £28,000 a week, which conflicts with Capology on both the leader and Doughty’s figure. |
| SalaryLeaks | 2025/26 (previous season) | Joe Bryan | £35,000 a week (£1.8 million a year) | Estimate for the prior season only. It does not answer the current question. |
If you need one sentence for a quick reference: Capology puts Alfie Doughty first at £27,500 a week before bonuses, while Salary Sport lists Romain Esse at £38,000 a week. Treat both as estimates rather than contract terms.
Why the two current answers differ
The disagreement is not a simple error by one site. Salary databases build their numbers from reported information, agent-side reports and their own assumptions, and they do not publish their methods in a way that lets a reader reconstruct a specific player’s pay. Two sites can therefore reach different rankings for the same squad.

The gap is also large relative to the amounts involved. Esse’s estimate is about £10,500 a week higher than Doughty’s Capology figure. Over a full year, that is roughly £546,000 in difference, based on simple multiplication by 52 weeks. A gap of that size is more likely to reflect different underlying information than rounding.
Capology: fixed pay, bonuses excluded
Capology’s 2026/27 entry gives Doughty an estimated gross fixed salary of £27,500 a week, or £1,430,000 a year. The figure excludes bonuses. A player’s total earnings can therefore be higher than the number shown, and any appearance, goal or promotion-linked payments are not included.

Salary Sport: a higher leader, a different Doughty figure
Salary Sport names Romain Esse at £38,000 a week for 2026/27. Its listing for Doughty is £28,000 a week, which is £500 above Capology’s estimate for him. Because the two sites disagree on both the top name and the second name, it is hard to say which database is closer on any single player.
Previous season: a different name
SalaryLeaks gives Joe Bryan an estimated £35,000 a week, or £1.8 million a year, for 2025/26. That was the last season covered in the source. Bryan’s figure is useful as history, but it should not be used to answer who earns the most now.

“Highest earner” can mean career earnings
The question has a second meaning. Salary Sport’s all-time records for 2015 to 2026 name Jake Cooper as the club’s highest cumulative earner. That measure adds up what a player has been paid across the period covered. A long-serving player can top a career list while earning less per week than a newer signing.
When you compare figures, check which measure a page uses:

- Lightweight, Classic fit, Double-needle sleeve and bottom hem
- Current weekly pay: the amount a player earns per week in a given season. This is what the Capology and Salary Sport 2026/27 entries describe.
- Annual pay: weekly pay multiplied by the number of weeks in the contract year. Capology’s £1,430,000 is £27,500 × 52.
- Cumulative pay: the total across several seasons, as in the Salary Sport all-time records.
- Gross versus take-home: these estimates are before tax and National Insurance. A player’s net income is materially lower.
How to use salary estimates without overstating them
- Check the season first. A 2025/26 figure cannot answer a 2026/27 question.
- Confirm whether bonuses are included. Capology’s headline figure excludes them.
- Look for the same player on more than one site before quoting an amount.
- Use the word “estimated” in any published sentence about a specific player’s pay.
Until Millwall or the player confirms a figure, the accurate answer is that the highest-paid player is unknown. Public estimates point to Alfie Doughty on one site and Romain Esse on another for the current season, and the figures differ by about £10,500 a week.
