The comparisons that are available measure different things: one covers a single transfer window, another reports gross spending over ten seasons, and a third compares only six Premier League clubs. They cannot be combined into a defensible global ranking.
Net spend means transfer expenditure minus transfer income over a defined period. To answer “Which football team has spent the most after player sales?”, a ranking needs a consistent dataset with a specified start and end date, currency, and transfer-inclusion rules. Without those, assigning places or totals would be misleading.
Why there is no reliable global top 20 here
The available figures do not verify the cumulative worldwide ranking promised by “20 Football Clubs With Largest Net Spend Since 2013.” Transfermarkt provides a configurable club-balance interface, but the retrieved result does not establish a date range from 2013 through the latest complete transfer window. It therefore cannot support specific club positions or cumulative totals for that period. Transfermarkt’s statistics interface labels expenditure, arrivals, income, departures, and balance, and allows period and other filters to be selected.
The published comparisons below are useful context, but each answers a different question. None establishes a worldwide top 20.

| Source and date | What it reports | Why it is not a cumulative worldwide ranking since 2013 |
|---|---|---|
| Transfermarkt, 3 September 2025 | Arsenal had the highest reported net spend in the 2025 summer transfer window: €283.2 million. | This is a single-window snapshot, and Transfermarkt cautioned that figures could still change while some windows remained open. Transfermarkt’s report |
| Transfermarkt, 24 January 2024 | Chelsea had spent €2.33 billion on signings over the last ten seasons; it was the only club above €2 billion. | This is gross expenditure, not net spend, and its period is not the requested 2013-to-current window. Transfermarkt’s report |
| Planet Football, 6 June 2023 | Manchester United had the largest net spend since 2013 among the traditional Premier League Big Six, and the article reported €417 million in player-sale income. | The comparison is restricted to six Premier League clubs, not clubs worldwide. Planet Football’s article |
What net spend measures
In a transfer-balance comparison, net spend is transfer expenditure minus income from player sales over a stated period. For example, a club that pays €100 million for arrivals and receives €40 million for departures has a net spend of €60 million under that simple measure.
Do not confuse that activity balance with every financial measure called “net transfer costs.” UEFA’s 2018 benchmarking report distinguishes net transfer costs, which affect financial results, from net transfer spend, which describes underlying transfer activity within a 12-month period. A ranking must choose and explain one measure rather than combine figures that use different accounting concepts. UEFA’s 2018 benchmarking report

What a reproducible ranking must disclose
Two lists both labeled “net spend since 2013” may not be comparable unless they use the same rules. Before assigning ranks, a publisher should state:
- Dates: the exact start date in 2013 and the end date, including the latest complete transfer window counted.
- Source and currency: the dataset used and the currency in which totals are reported.
- Scope: whether the comparison covers clubs worldwide, a particular league, or another defined group.
- Transfer treatment: how loans, undisclosed fees, add-ons, youth transfers, and transfers between club entities are recorded.
- Components: gross expenditure and player-sale income alongside the resulting net balance, so readers can see how the ranking was calculated.
Those inclusion rules matter because the retrieved sources do not establish a common treatment for all of them. A list that omits its rules may look precise while comparing unlike totals.

How to read transfer-spending lists
Single-window rankings
A transfer-window table measures activity in that window, not the accumulated balance since 2013. Arsenal’s €283.2 million figure was Transfermarkt’s reported net spend for the 2025 summer window as of 3 September 2025, with some windows still open. It should not be presented as the club’s total for the longer period.
Gross-spending rankings
Gross expenditure counts spending on signings without subtracting player-sale income. Transfermarkt’s €2.33 billion figure for Chelsea covered signings across the last ten seasons, as reported on 24 January 2024; it is not Chelsea’s net spend since 2013.

League-limited comparisons
A comparison among six prominent Premier League clubs can identify a leader within that group. Planet Football’s 2023 article reported Manchester United as the Big Six’s net-spend leader since 2013 and €417 million in player-sale income. That restricted result cannot establish which club leads across world football.
