Reports from CoinDesk and Solana Compass expected the new 200-millisecond slots to begin at epoch 1053, around 15:00 UTC that same day. Once it takes effect, the target block interval will be half the original 400 milliseconds, and that matters for anyone who sends transactions, uses wallets, or relies on timestamps from the chain.
What a slot is and why 400 milliseconds was the starting point
A slot is the fixed interval during which one scheduled validator, the leader, has the opportunity to produce a block. Solana launched with a target of 400 milliseconds per slot, which meant about 2.5 block opportunities per second. SIMD-0525, the Solana Improvement Document that governs this change and was authored by Brennan Watt of Anza, reduces that target in four feature-gated steps: 400ms to 350ms, then 300ms, then 250ms, and finally 200ms.
At the 200-millisecond target, the network aims for five slot opportunities per second. The change does not alter how a leader is chosen in principle, but it does change how much real time each leader controls the chain.
Where the rollout stands
The Solana Foundation’s upgrade page lists the first three steps as active on mainnet. The 200-millisecond stage is listed as active on devnet and testnet and scheduled for mainnet. The table below separates what has happened from what is still pending.

If you read a headline or social post saying the 200-millisecond block time is already live on Solana mainnet, check the date. As of the timestamp above, it was not. Confirm the current status on the Solana Foundation upgrade page or a live block explorer before you act on it.
Why sources cite both epoch 1052 and epoch 1053
Two different epoch numbers appear in coverage, and both are correct for different steps of the same process. SIMD-0525 states that “a slot-time feature gate MUST take effect on a one-epoch delay.” The feature gate is the on-chain switch. It activates first, at epoch 1052 according to the official tracker. The reduced slot time then takes effect one epoch later, at epoch 1053. Coverage that uses 1053 is describing when the new block interval actually applies. Coverage that uses 1052 is describing when the switch is flipped.

Epochs matter because they set how the chain’s schedule is measured. Each epoch contains 432,000 slots. At 200 milliseconds, that works out to roughly 24 hours per epoch. At the original 400-millisecond target, an epoch lasted about 48 hours. Because the epoch length is fixed in slots rather than in time, the calendar length of each epoch shrinks as the slot time falls.
Faster blocks do not mean more transaction capacity
A common assumption is that shorter block times mean proportionally more transactions per second. SIMD-0525 does not work that way. It scales the per-block compute limit down in step with the slot duration, so each block holds less work. The proposal’s table reduces the maximum block compute budget from 60 million compute units at the 400-millisecond baseline to 30 million at 200 milliseconds. More frequent blocks, each carrying less work, keep the theoretical wall-clock processing rate roughly stable.

The table below compares the baseline and the final target using the proposal’s values and the derived arithmetic that follows from them.
| Measure | 400 ms (original target) | 200 ms (final target) |
|---|---|---|
| Slot opportunities per second | 2.5 (CoinDesk, 2026) | 5 (CoinDesk, 2026) |
| Maximum block compute budget | 60 million compute units (SIMD-0525 table) | 30 million compute units (SIMD-0525 table) |
| Consecutive slots per leader | 4 (unchanged by SIMD-0525) | 4 (unchanged by SIMD-0525) |
| Nominal leader window | 1.6 seconds (calculated: 4 × 400 ms) | 800 milliseconds (calculated: 4 × 200 ms) |
| Blockhash expiry window (150 blocks) | About 60 seconds (calculated: 150 × 400 ms) | About 30 seconds (Solana Foundation, 2026) |
| Epoch length (432,000 slots) | About 48 hours (calculated) | About 24 hours (Solana Foundation, 2026) |
The leader window matters for fairness. Solana says a shorter window can reduce how long one leader can delay, reorder, or selectively include transactions before another leader takes over. That is a stated design goal. It is not a guaranteed result, and the protocol documents do not quantify how much it reduces exploitation in practice.

What the change means for your transactions and wallets
Most users will not need to change anything. The effects show up mainly in timing-sensitive workflows. The practical points below are the ones most likely to matter.
- Blockhash expiry is shorter in real time. A transaction’s recent blockhash stays valid for 150 blocks. That is about 38 seconds at 250 milliseconds and about 30 seconds at 200 milliseconds, according to the Solana Foundation. If you sign a transaction offline or need a person to approve it on a separate device, you have less time before the blockhash goes stale.
- Applications that estimate elapsed time from slot counts need an update. Any code that multiplies a slot count by 400 milliseconds will drift. The Solana Foundation’s guidance is to read the current slot duration or use
getBlockTimeinstead of a fixed constant. - Faster updates can help trading and pricing. Solana says shorter slots can improve latency and let market makers quote tighter spreads. Applications that make decisions based on slot freshness also gain finer timing granularity. These are intended benefits; results after activation were not available at the timestamp above.
- Your funds are not affected by the change itself. The upgrade changes timing and throughput parameters, not account balances or ownership rules. The main risk is operational, such as a failed or expired transaction that you need to resubmit.
Observed timing can differ from the target
A target is what the protocol aims for, not a measured average. Solana Compass reported that during the 250-millisecond stage, recent epoch averages were roughly 266 to 269 milliseconds, slower than the target. The 200-millisecond stage should be judged by live data after it activates. Until then, the figure of 200 milliseconds describes what the network is designed to do.

What validators and indexers need to plan for
Validators and data providers face the most direct operational effect. More frequent blocks mean more block data arrives in the same wall-clock period. According to Solana’s guidance, indexers do not need a change in data format, but they should plan to ingest and store proportionally more block data. The Solana Foundation page names block-skip rate as the criterion for moving from one stage to the next. It does not publish a numeric threshold on that page, so operators should watch the skip rate on live data rather than assume a fixed cutoff.
Ordinary users do not need to run validator software or change infrastructure to benefit from or adapt to this change.
Summary of the open questions
The main unresolved points are when the 200-millisecond stage becomes live on mainnet and how the network performs at that target. Both can be checked directly on the Solana Foundation upgrade page and through live block data. Until those checks are complete, treat 200 milliseconds as the scheduled target, not as a demonstrated result.
