Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The public statements cited here do not confirm that Lumentum’s optical-parts capacity is sold out to 2029. In an April 10, 2026 Bloomberg interview, Lumentum CEO Michael Hurlston forecast that the company would be sold out through 2028 within two quarters. Separately, Lumentum said its planned Greensboro, North Carolina, factory was expected to begin ramping production in mid-2028. Those are distinct claims: one is a reported demand outlook, the other a future manufacturing plan.
What Lumentum said about demand
In an April 10, 2026 report reprinting Bloomberg coverage, CEO Michael Hurlston said demand was outpacing supply and that Lumentum would be “sold out though all of 2028 within two quarters.” The report attributed the remark to an interview in Tokyo and described demand from large U.S. technology companies. It did not say the company was sold out through 2029, and it did not specify which product families or customer commitments were covered. SpotlightNews’ April 10, 2026 reprint of Bloomberg reporting.
This is a time-bound executive forecast reported in an interview, not a public filing establishing firm orders for every Lumentum product through that date. The available statement also does not identify whether “sold out” means all production capacity, capacity in particular components, or a specific allocation of future output.
Why NVIDIA is backing Lumentum
Lumentum announced multiyear strategic agreements with NVIDIA on March 2, 2026, and said NVIDIA was investing $2 billion to support research and development, future capacity, and operations as Lumentum builds U.S.-based manufacturing capabilities. The announcement establishes an investment and strategic relationship; it does not establish that NVIDIA owns or controls Lumentum. Lumentum’s March 2, 2026 announcement.

The strategic fit is optical hardware for the data-center infrastructure needed to support AI workloads. NVIDIA EVP of Operations Debora Shoquist said access to high-performance optical components was critical as AI workloads scale. Lumentum’s March announcement is a company statement about the partnership, not evidence that a particular volume of future output has already been delivered.
What the Greensboro factory adds—and when
On March 26, 2026, Lumentum announced plans to retrofit a 240,000-square-foot facility in Greensboro, North Carolina, to manufacture indium phosphide (InP)-based optical devices. The company said the products would include continuous-wave (CW) and ultra-high-power (UHP) lasers, and that production was expected to ramp in mid-2028. It said the facility would serve NVIDIA and other AI-infrastructure customers. Lumentum also announced a plan to preserve and create more than 400 U.S. manufacturing jobs at the site. These are announced plans and expectations, not proof that the facility is already producing at full capacity. Lumentum’s March 26, 2026 facility announcement.

A planned production ramp does not, by itself, verify a sell-out date. The CEO’s reported 2028 demand outlook and the factory’s expected mid-2028 ramp concern different things: one describes a forecast about demand relative to capacity; the other describes when new manufacturing is expected to start ramping. The public details cited here do not quantify how much added output the site will provide or how it changes supply for each product family.
What Lumentum’s revenue growth does—and does not—show
Lumentum’s 2026 proxy statement reports fiscal-year 2026 net revenue of $3.014 billion, up 83.2% from $1.645 billion in fiscal-year 2025. The company describes its strategic shift toward AI and data-center products as a source of momentum. These reported results show substantial revenue growth, but they do not independently establish an order book or confirm that capacity is reserved through 2029. Lumentum’s 2026 definitive proxy statement filed with the SEC.

How to read the 2029 headline
For investors and readers tracking the supply outlook, three distinctions matter:
- Statement date: The cited CEO forecast was reported on April 10, 2026, and referred to being sold out through 2028.
- Product scope: The cited remark does not identify the specific optical parts or laser families covered.
- Existing versus planned capacity: The Greensboro facility was announced as a future project expected to ramp in mid-2028; an expected ramp is not current production.
On the evidence cited here, “sold out to 2029” remains unconfirmed. It should not be inferred from the 2028 forecast, the NVIDIA investment, the Greensboro factory plan, or Lumentum’s revenue growth. A 2029 claim would need a dated, attributable statement that identifies the relevant products and the scope of the capacity or orders being discussed.
