West Wits is no longer only building its Witwatersrand Basin Project: Qala Shallows poured its first gold on March 17, 2026. But first gold is not the same as steady-state production. The mine was still ramping up while underground development and surface infrastructure work continued, so the most accurate description is early production alongside ongoing construction and development.
What has West Wits achieved so far?
Qala Shallows is Stage 1 of West Wits’ Witwatersrand Basin Project (WBP) in Gauteng, South Africa. West Wits reported that the first underground ore reached the surface in October 2025. The company formally opened the project in December 2025, as development continued and the operation moved toward first gold.
On March 17, 2026, West Wits announced its maiden gold pour at Sibanye-Stillwater’s Ezulwini processing plant, where Qala Shallows ore was being toll treated. The company reported 2.54 kilograms of gold produced in March from initial on-reef development ore. That milestone confirms production had begun; it does not show that the mine had reached a stable or full-rate operating level. Mining Weekly reported the first pour.
Why are construction and production happening at the same time?
A mine can begin producing from initial development ore before all planned underground access and surface facilities are complete. At Qala Shallows, ore from early on-reef development was processed while the company continued preparing the broader operation. West Wits said in its April 2026 company report that its immediate focus was ramp-up, operational consistency and scaling the wider project. Its executive leadership described the priority as converting early production into consistent, reliable output while demonstrating operational stability and cost control. Underground development continued
For the quarter ended June 30, 2026, West Wits reported 543 metres of underground development: 375 metres on reef and 168 metres in waste development. The on-reef work both advances access to the deposit and produces ore that can be delivered for processing.
Surface infrastructure was not complete
At June 30, 2026, West Wits reported surface infrastructure at 45% completion. That is a dated quarter-end figure, not a current daily status measure. It illustrates why first gold and unfinished project infrastructure can coexist.

What do the production figures actually mean?
West Wits reported that deliveries of on-reef development ore to Ezulwini yielded 4.6 kilograms (148 ounces) of gold during the June 2026 quarter. It reported year-to-date production of 7.05 kilograms (227 ounces) through June 30. These figures describe early production from development ore, not a demonstrated steady-state annual rate or a forecast of future output. Mining Weekly’s June-quarter coverage reported the company’s operating figures.
How large is the wider WBP resource?
West Wits’ WBP JORC mineral resource estimate, updated as at February 1, 2026, was reported as 56.44 million tonnes grading 4 grams of gold per tonne, for 7.24 million ounces. The estimate covers the Kimberley, Bird and Main reef horizons. Qala Shallows is based on the Kimberley reef package, including the K9A and K9B reefs. A resource estimate describes geological material assessed under the applicable reporting framework; it is not, by itself, a statement of mineable reserves or guaranteed production. Mining Weekly reported the updated resource estimate.

What is known about funding and the project timeline?
In its September 2026 project update, West Wits said Qala Shallows remained fully funded to steady-state production. The company listed a R875-million senior loan facility, a R150-million working-capital facility and a R90-million cost-overrun facility from Absa Bank and Nedbank. It also reported repaying the US$12.5-million Nebari bridge loan in full and having approximately A$32 million in cash as at June 30, 2026. The cash figure is tied to that date; it should not be read as the company’s balance on a later publication date. The September update coverage reports these company figures.
The same update described a 17-year life of mine for Qala Shallows. That is a study-based project estimate, not a guarantee that operations will continue for 17 years or achieve any particular output. The available information establishes that construction and early production overlapped; it does not establish the mine’s precise later operating rate or the timing of every remaining development milestone.

Why the Project 200 study is not a published growth forecast
West Wits decided not to release Project 200 scoping study results to the market after consulting with the exchange and concluding the study did not meet ASX requirements. The stated issue was the proportion of inferred resources in the production target and the financial information derived from that target. Although the reported study used a 35-year mine-life model, its results were not publicly released as market results and should not be treated as an approved forecast of production, revenue or project value.
The company said it intended to continue studies and improve resource confidence by converting more inferred resources into higher-confidence categories before making any future disclosures as appropriate. Mining Weekly reported the disclosure decision.

What to watch next
The key distinction is between evidence that production has begun and evidence that operations have reached a consistent, steady-state level. The latest full operating figures described here are for the quarter ended June 30, 2026. An announcement index lists a Qala Shallows project update and 2027 outlook dated October 7, 2026, but the contents of that release are not established here. No specific 2027 target or milestone should be inferred from its title alone. For later operating or funding decisions, use the company’s actual subsequent announcements rather than treating these dated figures as current.
