Asian markets were mixed early Friday, October 9, 2026, while crude prices eased after a volatile Thursday on Wall Street. Tokyo and Shanghai fell, Hong Kong and Australia rose, and South Korea and Taiwan were closed. These are the Associated Press’s dated market figures, not live prices.

How Asian markets moved

Trading was holiday-thinned, with South Korea and Taiwan markets closed. Among markets open, the Associated Press reported:

Market Reported move
Nikkei 225, Japan Down 0.8% to 68,512.30
Shanghai Composite, China Down 1.4% to 3,758.47
Hang Seng, Hong Kong Up 1.1% to 24,046.79
S&P/ASX 200, Australia Up 0.6%; closing level not stated in the AP report

The mixed regional picture followed an uneven U.S. session rather than a broad move in one direction.

Wall Street ended Thursday with split results

The S&P 500 fell 0.5%, its second straight loss, and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 1.3%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average edged up 0.1%, according to the AP report.

Technology shares weakened

Several large technology stocks fell: Nvidia was down 2.9%, Broadcom 4.3%, and Micron 4.8%. The report said technology shares were under pressure and that Nvidia’s decline weighed heavily on the S&P 500. It framed AI-related stocks as facing pressure to demonstrate growth that justifies high valuations; that is the report’s market interpretation, not a forecast.

PepsiCo rose after results

PepsiCo gained 3.7% after reporting quarterly profit and revenue above analysts’ expectations, the AP reported.

Oil gave back part of Thursday’s rise

Brent crude rose 4.1% Thursday to $104.28 a barrel, then slipped 1% early Friday to $103.28. The U.S. benchmark crude price was down 0.9% early Friday at $90.23 a barrel. These moves show the timing of the reversal; they do not establish what oil will do next.

The AP described Brent as having recently moved between $96 and nearly $110 a barrel amid uncertainty about when the Iran war would allow the global energy industry to return to normal. It reported that Brent approached $106 before President Donald Trump said “productive discussions” were happening with Iran and that the U.S. military would not attack it before the upcoming U.S. elections in November. This is the AP’s account of the events and market context, not independent confirmation that the comments caused the price moves.

Treasury yields rose, then retreated

The 10-year Treasury yield reached 5.35% early Thursday and later fell to 5.23%, according to the AP. The U.S. government sold $22 billion in 30-year bonds at auction, with a high yield below 5.62%. After the auction, the 30-year Treasury yield eased to 5.60% from 5.73%.

The AP also noted a U.S. federal deficit of nearly $2 trillion for the fiscal year that ended September 30. The report did not establish that deficit figure as the cause of the day’s yield moves.

What the session does—and does not—show

The AP quoted Steven Innes of SPI Asset Management describing equities as “within striking distance of record highs” but facing a “considerably less hospitable” backdrop. Innes also said that AI-linked momentum trading was becoming “a much tougher contest between balance-sheet strength and ambition.” Those comments offer an attributed interpretation of the market environment; the reported moves themselves were mixed across regions and asset classes.
