The Sensex closed at 71,593.24 on October 8, 2026, down 1,045.46 points, or 1.44%. A news report described the close as a more than two-and-a-half-year low—not a verified three-year low. The decline came after the Reserve Bank of India raised its repo rate and shifted to a calibrated-tightening stance, while rising crude prices, foreign equity selling, elevated global yields and rupee weakness added to investor concerns. Available reporting identifies these as pressures, but does not measure how much each one contributed to the fall.

What happened to the Sensex?

The BSE Sensex closed at 71,593.24 on Thursday, October 8, 2026, falling 1,045.46 points (1.44%), according to PTI reporting carried by ThePrint. It touched 71,327.75 during the session. The report characterized the closing level as a more than two-and-a-half-year low, noting that the previous close near that level was on February 13, 2024.

The fall followed a 429.11-point decline on October 7, when the index closed at 72,638.70. The two closing levels show the sell-off continued across both sessions; they do not establish which news item caused a particular portion of either day’s move.

How did the RBI decision affect sentiment?

At its October 5–7, 2026 meeting, the RBI’s Monetary Policy Committee unanimously raised the policy repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50% and changed its stance from neutral to calibrated tightening. The resolution says the duration and extent of any rate-hike cycle will depend on growth and inflation developments, underlying inflation, whether price pressures broaden, second-round effects of the supply shock and demand conditions. The resolution is available as a reproduction of the official text at Complied AI; its captured record advises checking material decisions against the RBI’s official communication.

Higher rates can weigh on share valuations and raise borrowing costs for businesses and consumers. The shift in stance also signaled less room to expect near-term rate cuts. PTI described the outlook as rate cuts being off the table in the near term, but that wording should be treated as the report’s characterization, not as a verbatim sentence from the captured policy resolution.

Why did rising crude prices matter?

PTI reported that Brent crude rose 4.25% to US$104.50 a barrel on October 8. The RBI resolution also noted crude-price volatility amid the West Asia conflict and said high energy and commodity prices were contributing to near-term inflation pressures.

For India, dearer oil can raise the cost of imports and feed into inflation, which may affect household purchasing power, business costs and monetary-policy expectations. Those are reasons investors may be concerned; the available reports do not quantify crude’s share of the Sensex decline.

What other pressures were reported?

  • Foreign equity selling: PTI, citing exchange data, reported that foreign institutional investors sold equities worth ₹6,121.37 crore on October 7.
  • Global yields: Elevated yields were identified in the report as another pressure on sentiment.
  • Rupee weakness: The report also cited weakness in the rupee among market concerns.

These conditions can influence investor demand for Indian shares, but the cited reporting presents them as contributors to the mood, not a tested breakdown of cause and effect.

What did the RBI’s inflation and growth figures say?

The policy resolution placed the rate decision in a mixed economic context. It cited National Statistics Office real GDP growth of 7.8% in Q1 2026–27, RBI-reported CPI inflation of 4.8% in August 2026, and the RBI’s 5.2% CPI inflation projection for fiscal year 2026–27. These figures refer to different periods and measures; they are policy context, not direct explanations of a one-day index move.

How should investors read the fall?

The October 8 close followed a rate increase and a tighter policy signal at a time of elevated oil prices and reported foreign selling. The timing helps explain why those developments were discussed alongside the decline, but daily market reporting does not isolate their individual effects. The reported figures describe a specific event window and are not, by themselves, a basis for predicting future returns or making an investment decision.
