There is no verified basis here for calling Asia’s sports market a $6 billion arena. The evidence instead shows a country-by-country contest in which Netflix, other streaming services and leagues are using selected live rights, sports-related programming and direct-to-consumer platforms to attract viewers. Netflix’s reported 17%–18% share refers to subscription-streaming revenue in major Asia-Pacific markets excluding mainland China—not sports rights or sports-market value.
What the $6 billion figure does—and does not—describe
“$6 billion” is not a self-explanatory measure of the Asian sports business. The figures identified in coverage refer to different markets, periods and kinds of revenue; none establishes that Asia’s sports rights, sports streaming or entire sports economy is worth $6 billion.
| Figure | What it measures | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Approximately $6 billion | An IPL five-year media-rights cycle, as reported by The Economic Times in 2025 coverage. | The value of all Asian sports rights or streaming. |
| More than $6 billion by 2028 | Media Partners Asia’s forecast for APAC premium video-on-demand advertising, listed in its report catalog. | A sports-rights valuation. |
| $6.6 billion | Media Partners Asia’s estimate of annual recurring revenue for a proposed Netflix–Warner Bros. Discovery combination, reported by Variety in December 2025. | The value of the sports market. |
A separate $16.2 billion estimate for the APAC commercial sports economy in 2026, alongside a reported forecast of 1%–2% annual rights-fee growth, appeared in a Yahoo Sports summary of a Media Partners Asia report. Because the full report was not independently verified, treat those figures as a secondary-source estimate, not as a definitive market total.
Netflix’s regional position is not a measure of sports dominance
S&P Global Market Intelligence estimated that Netflix represented roughly 17%–18% of subscription-streaming revenue across major Asia-Pacific markets excluding mainland China. That is a regional streaming-revenue estimate, not a share of sports rights, live-sports audiences or sports spending. S&P published the estimate in its January 13, 2026 analysis, “Implications of the Netflix-Warner Bros. Discovery deal for the APAC region.”

The same analysis describes live sports as one tool among several that services are using as growth moderates in some markets. Its examples are local and event-specific; they do not show that Netflix carries a comprehensive Asia-wide sports package.

Rights vary by market and event. These examples are drawn from S&P Global’s January 2026 analysis and should not be treated as a permanent viewing guide; check local availability and current rights for the season or event you want.

| Market | Service or rights example | Type of sports offering described |
|---|---|---|
| South Korea | TVING | Exclusive KBO carriage; S&P Global also notes ad-supported subscriptions. |
| Japan | Prime Video | MLB-related expansion. |
| Japan | Netflix | Exclusive rights to the 2026 World Baseball Classic in Japan. |
| India | Netflix | No rights to the must-watch cricket competitions discussed in S&P Global’s analysis; cricket documentaries and exclusive WWE streaming rights with Hindi commentary instead. |
These distinctions matter: a documentary is not a live event, and rights to one competition do not imply rights to another. In India, for example, the cited Netflix activity should not be mistaken for a general cricket-rights package.
Can you watch a league directly instead of through a streamer?
Sometimes the league itself may become the seller. The Associated Press reported on February 26, 2026 that the Premier League planned to launch Premier League Plus in Singapore. League chief executive Richard Masters described the initiative as a way to build a direct customer relationship and learn about promotion, pricing, churn and distribution. He said the league wanted to learn whether the model could be replicated elsewhere; the report did not present wider expansion as certain.

A direct league service changes who manages the customer relationship. It does not by itself guarantee that a league will offer the same service in other countries, or that it will replace broadcasters and streaming partners. The launch was planned for Singapore, so viewers elsewhere should not assume access.
Where can I watch live sports in Asia?
Start with the country and the sport, then check the rights-holder’s current local announcement or the service’s event schedule. There is no single Asia-wide subscription established by these examples. Rights can differ even between events in the same sport, and a service’s presence in one country does not mean it carries the same event across the region.

Is Netflix getting into live sports in Asia?
Netflix has taken selected sports-related steps in specific markets, including the cited 2026 World Baseball Classic rights in Japan and WWE streaming rights in India. It has also produced cricket documentaries in India. These examples show targeted activity, not a comprehensive regional sports package or a general claim that Netflix leads every sport in Asia.
The broader competition also includes services pursuing live rights and ad-supported subscription options, as well as leagues exploring direct-to-consumer distribution. Which option matters to a viewer depends on the country and event; the cited evidence supports no single Asia-wide winner.
