Bitcoin ‘New Money’ Inflows Near $5B as Rally Stalls, Glassnode Estimates

Glassnode estimated about $4.9 billion in Bitcoin “new money” inflows over the 30 days through October 5, 2026, while realized capitalization rose $12.8 billion. The measures are different: realized-cap growth can reflect existing coins changing hands at higher prices.

Glassnode estimated that about $4.9 billion in Bitcoin “new money” entered the market over the 30 days through October 5, 2026, even as Bitcoin’s price struggled to break higher. Over the same period, realized capitalization rose $12.8 billion—but the two figures measure different things, and the larger increase does not mean that $12.8 billion of fresh cash arrived.

What the $4.9 billion estimate measures

Cointelegraph reported on October 8, 2026, that Glassnode estimated roughly $4.9 billion in rolling 30-day Bitcoin “new money” inflows through October 5. The reported estimate combines corporate treasury purchases, stablecoin growth, and inflows to U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs). It is a 30-day window, not a calendar-month total.

The figure is Glassnode’s estimate as relayed by Cointelegraph, not a standardized measure of Bitcoin capital flows. The report does not provide values for the three categories separately or enough detail to reconstruct the calculation. The underlying Glassnode release and calculation were not available for independent verification.

Why realized capitalization rose more

Realized capitalization assigns each Bitcoin a value based on the price at which it most recently moved on-chain. It can therefore rise when existing coins move at higher prices, even if an equivalent amount of new capital has not entered the market.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

Cointelegraph attributed a $12.8 billion realized-cap increase over the same 30-day period to Glassnode. The report said existing holders accounted for about three-fifths of that increase. In Glassnode’s interpretation, new money covered less than two-fifths; the remainder reflected coins changing hands at higher prices among money already in the market.

These figures should not be read as directly interchangeable: the $4.9 billion is a reported estimate of selected inflow categories, while the $12.8 billion is a change in an on-chain valuation measure. Neither figure alone establishes how much fresh cash entered every part of the Bitcoin market.

What the report said about Bitcoin’s stalled rally

At the time of Cointelegraph’s October 8 report, Bitcoin was around $83,000 and down 1% month to date. The outlet said the price had made four unsuccessful attempts to move above $87,000 since September 21. These are observations from that publication date, not live prices or current market conditions.

The report also said Glassnode compared the current mix of flows and realized-cap growth with rallies in 2024 and 2025, when the pattern was similar but inflows were substantially larger. The underlying comparison chart was not independently reviewed, so the historical comparison should be treated as the report’s account rather than a separately verified finding.

Short-term holders and profit-taking context

Cointelegraph reported that 86% of coins sent to exchanges at a profit on the day Bitcoin first closed above $85,000 since January came from short-term holders—defined in the report as holders who had held their coins for fewer than 155 days. This describes the composition of profitable exchange-bound coins on that cited day; it does not mean that 86% of all Bitcoin holders sold.

The same report attributed a short-term-holder aggregate realized price of about $78,250 as of October 7 to CryptoQuant. That dated cost-basis estimate offers context for the holder cohort, but it does not establish where Bitcoin’s price will go next.

How to read the figures

  • $4.9 billion: Glassnode’s reported estimate of rolling 30-day “new money” inflows through October 5, 2026, combining corporate treasury purchases, stablecoin growth, and U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF inflows.
  • $12.8 billion: Reported realized-cap growth over the same window, a valuation change that can include existing coins moving at higher prices.
  • About three-fifths: The share of realized-cap growth Cointelegraph attributed to existing investors, according to Glassnode.
  • Price references: The roughly $83,000 price and failed attempts above $87,000 describe conditions reported on October 8, 2026, not a current quote.

The figures and interpretations above come from Cointelegraph’s account of Glassnode and CryptoQuant data; a TradingView-hosted republication repeats the report but is not independent confirmation. Without the primary calculation or a component-level breakdown, “new money” is best understood as this report’s specific estimate—not as a universal flow statistic.
