Bitwise CEO Hunter Horsley says the weak demand for his firm’s spot Dogecoin ETF, BWOW, exposed a “delta” between people who buy crypto through ETFs and people who use crypto brokerage apps. That is his interpretation, not a proven rule about two distinct investor populations. As of Oct. 8, 2026, BWOW was scheduled to stop trading after Oct. 14, with cash distributions to remaining shareholders expected on Oct. 22; neither event had happened yet.
What Horsley meant by a “delta”
In an interview reported by The Block on Oct. 8, 2026, Horsley described BWOW’s outcome as “tragic” and said ETF users did not want to put money into Dogecoin, though that could change. He also said, “I like Dogecoin, I own Dogecoin,” describing it as an authentic asset that “went nowhere as an ETF.”
His explanation is a CEO’s reading of one product’s weak demand. The reporting cited here does not establish through an independent study that ETF buyers and crypto-app users are generally different groups, or that this supposed divide caused BWOW’s closure.
What BWOW was—and what it was not
BWOW launched on the NYSE in November 2025 as a spot Dogecoin trust. It was not a crypto brokerage app: the trust held Dogecoin, and its objective was to provide exposure to the token’s value, less expenses and liabilities. Bitwise’s June 30, 2026 Form 10-Q describes Dogecoin as the trust’s sole asset and states that objective (SEC filing).

The SEC-filed prospectus, dated Nov. 26, 2025, details how the investment worked (prospectus):
- Price reference: The trust used the CF Dogecoin-Dollar US Settlement Price, calculated by CF Benchmarks from executed trade flow on major Dogecoin trading platforms.
- Custody: Coinbase Custody Trust Company was named as custodian.
- Fee: The prospectus listed an annual sponsor fee of 0.34%.
- Trading: Most investors would buy and sell shares during the trading day through brokers, potentially paying customary brokerage commissions and charges. Shares could trade above or below the trust’s net asset value.
- Risk: The prospectus called the shares speculative securities, warned of a high degree of risk, and said investors could lose their entire investment.
These terms describe a way to gain financial exposure through exchange-traded shares; they do not give a shareholder the same thing as holding Dogecoin in an app or using the token. Which route is appropriate depends on the investor’s intended use, trading costs, custody arrangements, market access, and other needs. The cited sources do not provide a complete current comparison of all funds and apps.

The device intuitively shows key transaction details like the amount and address, ensuring the data hasn't been tampered with during transmission—truly achieving "What You See Is What You Sign." It also features secure PIN code protection and a self-destruct mechanism after multiple incorrect attempts (the private key is wiped after 5 consecutive wrong entries), effectively preventing brute-force attacks even if the device is lost.
- Comprehensive Multi-Chain Asset Support, Access the Web3 Ecosystem: Fully supports major mainnets and Layer 2 networks, including Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), LTC, ATOM, FIL, TRX and more. By adding custom RPCs, you can easily access all EVM-compatible chains like BSC, Polygon, and Avalanche. When a transaction is needed, you sign it offline with your imKey, and the app broadcasts it to the chain. This guarantees asset security without sacrificing the fluidity of use.

The package includes the hardware wallet, a USB cable, and mnemonic cards, making it ready to use right out of the box—a secure and reliable gateway to the crypto world.
BWOW’s timeline and the reported demand figures
Bitwise said it would liquidate the fund as part of optimizing its product range to meet evolving investor needs. A spokesperson gave that explanation to CoinDesk, which reported on Sept. 14 that trading was expected to end Oct. 14 and remaining shareholders were expected to receive cash on Oct. 22. The Block later reported that trading was scheduled to stop after Oct. 14. Both dates were still in the future as of Oct. 8, 2026.
| Measure | Reported figure | Source and timing |
|---|---|---|
| BWOW assets | Approximately $687,713 | CoinDesk snapshot as of Sept. 9, 2026 |
| BWOW assets | Approximately $725,870 | SoSoValue data cited by The Block, as of Oct. 7, 2026 |
| BWOW trading volume | $51,480 | SoSoValue data cited by The Block for September 2026 |
The asset figures refer to different observation dates, so they are not competing estimates for the same day. They are dated snapshots, not final liquidation totals.

CoinDesk also analyzed fund-flow data across three tracked U.S. Dogecoin ETFs. Through Sept. 10, 2026, the group had drawn just over $12 million in cumulative net inflows; CoinDesk said the funds recorded no net flows on 166 of 199 trading days and saw about $108,000 in net withdrawals from Aug. 13 through Sept. 10. For context, CoinDesk reported that XRP funds attracted $12.29 million on Sept. 9 alone. These are CoinDesk’s analysis of fund-flow data, not SEC filing figures. They indicate low or intermittent demand in the period analyzed, but do not establish why BWOW closed.
Other explanations focus on the product’s value proposition
People quoted by CoinDesk offered different interpretations, also as opinion rather than proof of the reason for BWOW’s closure.

- THE WALLET FOR EVERYONE: Ballet wallets are 100% offline. Storing your cryptocurrency assets in offline cold storage prevents unauthorized electronic access to the funds on your REAL Series wallets. Your funds cannot be electronically hacked.
- NO SETUP: REAL Series wallets come ready to use out of the box. Just scan a QR code to store your cryptocurrency and you’re all done!
- NO MAINTENANCE: REAL Series wallets are physical wallets which, unlike electronic hardware wallets, don’t need to be maintained or electronically updated.
- BALLET CRYPTO: The Ballet Crypto app allows you to easily view and manage your assets in real-time.
- Access may not be the main obstacle: Jordan Jefferson, founder of MyDoge and DogeOS, said, “Access has never been Dogecoin’s biggest constraint.” He argued that Dogecoin already had broad availability and distribution, and that broader institutional interest would require more to underwrite than price appreciation alone.
- The audience fit may have been unclear: Smoke, a pseudonymous representative of Own The Doge, said BWOW “sat ‘between two audiences but served neither.’” The representative also called it “a verdict on selling $DOGE as if it were just another ticker.” CoinDesk identifies Own The Doge as holding the exclusive license to the original Doge meme image; the comments remain that representative’s critique, not an established finding.
Those views raise a practical question: what problem was the ETF meant to solve for its intended buyer? A fund can make price exposure available through a brokerage account, but availability alone does not show that investors want the exposure, that they see a reason to choose it over alternatives, or that the product serves their intended use.

BWOW’s closure and the reported flow figures show that this product attracted limited and uneven demand. They do not prove that ETF buyers reject Dogecoin generally, that crypto-app users are more interested in it, or that access, fees, custody, or product positioning was the decisive factor. Horsley’s “delta” is one interpretation; Jefferson’s and Smoke’s comments point to different possible explanations.
Best Value
For anyone comparing routes to Dogecoin exposure, the key distinction is what is actually owned and how it is used: BWOW shares represented an interest in a trust holding Dogecoin, while direct app access involves the token itself under that provider’s arrangements. The prospectus establishes BWOW’s fee, custody, benchmark, broker-trading structure, and risks; the reporting does not establish a universal advantage for either route.
