Crypto Falls as Anniversary of 2025 Bitcoin Flash Crash Nears

Bitcoin and other major cryptocurrencies fell in CoinDesk’s October 8, 2026 snapshot as the first anniversary of the 2025 Bitcoin flash crash approached. The timing does not establish a cause.

Crypto prices fell broadly in CoinDesk’s October 8, 2026 snapshot, two days before the first anniversary of Bitcoin’s October 10, 2025 flash crash. Bitcoin was just above $80,000, while Ether, XRP and Solana also posted sharp losses. The timing is notable, but the reporting does not establish that the anniversary caused the decline.

Why was crypto falling in CoinDesk’s October 8 snapshot?

CoinDesk reported Bitcoin at a one-month low just above $80,000 on October 8, 2026. It was down 4% over the previous 24 hours and more than 8% from nearly $87,000 four days earlier. The report also recorded broad losses across other large cryptocurrencies:

Asset 24-hour move reported October 8, 2026 Weekly context
Bitcoin (BTC) Down 4% More than 8% below nearly $87,000 four days earlier
Ether (ETH) Down about 6% Down double digits for the week
XRP Down about 6% Down double digits for the week
Solana (SOL) Down about 9% Down double digits for the week

These are CoinDesk’s reported figures for that publication-day snapshot, not live prices. CoinDesk listed several possible concerns for investors, but did not quantify their effects or establish that any one of them caused the drop:

  • Rising oil prices and higher interest rates could, in CoinDesk’s framing, potentially draw money away from risk assets such as Bitcoin.
  • Regulatory uncertainty following the failure of the Clarity Act.
  • The approaching U.S. midterm elections.

The report does not rank these pressures or show how much each contributed. The evidence supports describing them as possible concerns, not a proven explanation for the selloff.

  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

What happened in the October 10, 2025 Bitcoin flash crash?

CoinDesk dates the flash crash to Friday, October 10, 2025. Bitcoin fell from about $122,000 to $105,000, with lower prices recorded on some exchanges. Much of the move from roughly $122,000 to $105,000 took place within minutes during thin Friday-evening U.S. trading, according to the report.

That episode was a sudden, concentrated move in Bitcoin under thin trading conditions. The October 2026 snapshot, by contrast, described losses over a 24-hour period and a broader weekly decline across Bitcoin, Ether, XRP and Solana. CoinDesk’s reporting does not provide exchange-by-exchange data or enough detail to establish that the two episodes were mechanically alike.

Does the anniversary explain the 2026 decline?

No causal link is established. The October 10 anniversary is the news peg for the timing of the October 2026 story; it is not evidence that traders sold because of the date. CoinDesk identified possible macroeconomic and regulatory worries, but did not isolate their effects. The careful conclusion is that a broad decline coincided with the anniversary approaching, while its precise causes remain unquantified in the reporting.

What institutional adoption figures add—and what they do not

A separate State Street study offers a longer-term view of institutional sentiment, not an explanation for the October price move. State Street’s October 6, 2026 release describes a survey of 300 asset managers, asset owners and wealth managers. Senior executives across North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, the Middle East and Latin America were surveyed from July 20 to August 19, 2026.

  • 51% of respondents expected digital assets to become mainstream within five years, if they had not already, compared with 11% in 2024.
  • Respondents reported average digital-asset allocations of approximately 11% and expected those allocations to reach 17% over the next three years.

These are survey findings and expectations summarized by State Street, not audited measurements of all institutional portfolios or forecasts of investment returns. They neither explain the October selloff nor predict Bitcoin’s price. Angus Fletcher, State Street’s head of Digital Asset Solutions, interpreted the shift as evidence that institutions are focusing more on infrastructure, operations, regulation and risk than on debating whether the technology matters. That is a company executive’s view of the survey and market, not an independent finding.
