On Wednesday, October 7, 2026, 100.02 BTC that had sat unspent since July 2010 moved in a single transaction. CoinDesk, which reviewed the Bitcoin transaction records, put the batch at roughly $8.5 million at publication-time prices. When the coins arrived in 2010, Bitcoin traded at around six cents, so the same amount was worth about $6. The movement is a transfer on the blockchain. Nothing in the public record shows a sale, a profit, or who controls the coins.
What moved on the blockchain
According to CoinDesk, 100.02 BTC was received at an address on July 30, 2010. The coins were traced to two mining rewards created that month: one worth 50 BTC and another worth 50.02 BTC, with the second figure including transaction fees. Those coins stayed unspent for more than 16 years until a transaction confirmed at 18:52 UTC on October 7, 2026.
That transaction split the batch into two outputs:
| Element | Amount | What the report establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Source: mining reward, July 2010 | 50 BTC | Traced by CoinDesk to July 2010 mining |
| Source: mining reward, July 2010 (fees included) | 50.02 BTC | Traced by CoinDesk to July 2010 mining |
| Output 1 (destination address) | 10 BTC | Unspent when CoinDesk checked on Thursday, October 8, 2026 |
| Output 2 (destination address) | About 90.02 BTC | Unspent when CoinDesk checked on Thursday, October 8, 2026 |
CoinDesk named mempool.space as the block explorer behind its transaction review. Readers who want to inspect the record can search the transaction on that explorer and see the inputs, outputs, and whether each output has been spent. The explorer shows the ledger, not the identity of the people behind the addresses.
What the $8.5 million and $6 figures mean
The two numbers describe value at two points in time. The roughly $6 figure comes from StatMuse historical pricing, as cited by CoinDesk, and reflects the market value of 100.02 BTC when Bitcoin traded near six cents on July 30, 2010. The roughly $8.5 million figure is CoinDesk’s estimate at publication-time prices on October 8, 2026.

- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Neither number tells you what the holder paid, what the holder would receive by selling, or how much profit exists. The $6 is not an established purchase price. The $8.5 million is not a current price and will change with the market. A personal-finance reader should treat the comparison as arithmetic on market value, not as a return calculation, because cost basis, holding continuity, and any sale proceeds are not part of the public record.
Why an old address can show activity while these coins sat still
An address linked to the coins had other spending activity in 2015, 2017, and 2018. That does not mean the specific 100.02 BTC was moving during those years. Bitcoin records each incoming payment separately as an unspent transaction output, or UTXO. An address can receive many payments over time, spend some of them, and leave others untouched. The July 2010 coins were their own UTXOs, and CoinDesk reports they remained unspent until the October 2026 transaction.

This is why a clean-looking address history can be misleading. Activity on an address tells you about that address, while the age of a particular coin depends on the specific output being spent.
What the transfer does and does not establish
- Spending access: The transaction shows that whoever controlled the keys for the source coins could authorize spending them.
- Not a sale: The reporting does not describe the transfer as a sale, and the destination outputs were still unspent when checked the next morning.
- Not an identity: The public record does not say who controls the source or destination addresses.
- Not a Satoshi connection: The phrase “Satoshi era” refers to a period when Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto was still active. The coins’ age does not show that the miner was Satoshi Nakamoto or that the address owner is known.
Galaxy Research, which flagged the activity, posted on X: “This address has been somewhat active in the past, but these specific coins have not moved since 2010. We track the coins.” CoinDesk does not name an individual speaker, so the statement should be attributed to Galaxy Research as an organization.

A practical check for your own holdings
The story is a useful reminder about how value and ownership differ in crypto holdings:
- Separate market value from realized gain. A coin worth $8.5 million on paper has not produced $8.5 million in cash, and a six-cent-to-market-price comparison is not a profit figure.
- Keep records of purchase price and dates. Cost basis is what determines gains when coins are sold or moved in a taxable way. Without records, the historic price of a coin does not tell you your own position.
- Date every valuation. Quoted values depend on the moment they were calculated. A figure reported in October 2026 may look very different by the time you read it.
- Verify on the ledger, not on headlines. When a large transfer is reported, a transaction explorer shows the inputs and outputs. It does not show intentions or ownership.
For this transfer, the verified facts are the 100.02 BTC source from two July 2010 mining rewards, the October 7, 2026 confirmation, the two destination outputs, and the valuations as CoinDesk reported them. Anything beyond that, including the holder’s motives or the eventual outcome, remains unknown.
