Standard Chartered Plans Crypto Custody Service in Singapore

Standard Chartered has announced a conditional plan for digital-asset custody in Singapore, aimed at institutional and accredited investor corporate clients—not a confirmed retail launch.

Standard Chartered Bank (Singapore) Limited has announced plans to offer custody for selected cryptoassets, stablecoins and tokenised real-world assets to institutional clients and accredited investor corporate clients. The service is conditional on applicable regulatory requirements; the bank has not announced a launch date or said the service is operating.

What Standard Chartered has announced

The proposed service would add digital-asset custody in Singapore to the bank’s Financing & Securities Services activity, alongside traditional asset servicing and tokenisation. Standard Chartered described Singapore as an addition to a custody footprint that includes the UAE, Luxembourg and Hong Kong. The announcement does not identify a specific regulatory approval for the planned Singapore offering. Standard Chartered’s announcement

Who the service is intended for

The stated audience is institutional clients and accredited investor corporate clients. The announcement does not describe retail access or a consumer account or wallet.

Which assets are in scope

The bank named selected cryptoassets, stablecoins and tokenised real-world assets. “Selected” matters: it has not published a list of eligible tokens or blockchain networks, or detailed how assets would be held or controlled.

What custody means—and what it does not mean

Digital-asset custody generally concerns safeguarding assets and managing control over the cryptographic keys used to access them. It is distinct from issuing a stablecoin: a custodian holds or administers assets for clients, while an issuer creates and manages a token under its own arrangements. Standard Chartered’s announcement concerns a planned custody service, not a stablecoin launch.

The bank has not disclosed its proposed custody technology, segregation arrangements, insurance, liability terms, pricing, client onboarding process or named clients. Those details would be central to assessing the practical protections and terms if the service proceeds.

Singapore’s stablecoin rules are relevant context, not approval

On 1 September 2026, the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) published a consultation on proposed legislative amendments to implement its stablecoin framework. MAS said only issuers licensed under that framework may describe themselves as licensed MAS-regulated stablecoin issuers or represent their stablecoins as MAS-regulated. It also said non-MAS-regulated stablecoins would be treated as Digital Payment Tokens under the framework it described. MAS consultation on proposed stablecoin-framework amendments

That consultation provides regulatory context for stablecoins; it does not show that Standard Chartered’s proposed custody service, or any particular asset it may eventually support, has been approved. In a 15 June 2026 explainer, Standard Chartered said Singapore rules may involve the Payment Services Act for payment activities, the Securities and Futures Act for tokenised capital-markets products, and the Financial Services and Markets Act depending on the service. That is the bank’s general explanation, not a legal determination about this offering. Standard Chartered’s digital-assets explainer

How the Singapore plan fits the bank’s wider custody activity

Standard Chartered has presented the planned service as part of a broader servicing proposition rather than a standalone retail crypto product. Its May 2026 announcement said the bank had accepted a non-binding offer to acquire Zodia Custody’s regulated custody activities, subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions. It also said Zodia’s institutional digital-asset infrastructure platform would be separated into Zodia Solutions. That announcement does not establish that the transaction has closed. What institutional clients should verify before relying on the service

The announcement does not provide the operational and contractual information needed to assess a custody arrangement. Prospective clients would need details directly from the bank, including:

Market forecasts are not evidence of service performance

In a 2026 article, Standard Chartered estimated global digital-asset custody at approximately USD 700 billion in 2025. The same article reported forecasts—not realized results—including the bank’s projection of USD 2 trillion in tokenised real-world assets excluding stablecoins by 2028, a Boston Consulting Group projection of approximately USD 16 trillion in tokenised assets by 2030, and a McKinsey projection of USD 2 trillion to USD 4 trillion by 2030. Standard Chartered also projected stablecoin market capitalisation of USD 2 trillion by the end of 2028. These estimates and forecasts describe the market outlook cited by the bank; they do not indicate the proposed Singapore service’s launch, client demand or performance.
