The PRAN card is a record of your subscriber details, not a separate pension account. You can apply online through the eNPS platform or in person or online through a PFRDA-registered Point of Presence (PoP). Which route applies depends on your subscriber category, and government employees covered by NPS follow a different workflow.
What a PRAN is and what the card shows
Protean CRA, the NPS central recordkeeping agency, defines PRAN in its registration FAQ as: “a unique and portable number provided to each Subscriber under NPS upon successful registration and remains with the Subscriber till he/ she exits from NPS.” The number stays with you across jobs and changes of employer, which is the main practical reason to keep it safe.
The PRAN card displays your subscriber information as held in the CRA system. Protean CRA also makes an electronic PRAN (ePRAN) available through your NPS login. Either version proves your identity as a subscriber; neither is a bank-style passbook or a separate investment product.
Who can open an individual NPS account
According to PFRDA, an individual applicant must:
- Be an Indian citizen. This covers resident Indians, non-resident Indians (NRIs) and Overseas Citizens of India (OCI).
- Be aged 18 to 85.
- Satisfy KYC (know-your-customer) requirements.
- Be legally competent to enter a contract.
PFRDA excludes Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) from individual accounts. If you fall into either group, check with a PoP before assuming you can open one.

Choose your application route
There are two standard routes for individuals and a third, employer-led route for government employees. The table below compares them on the factors that usually decide the choice.

A PoP is the first point of contact for registration and KYC, and it can also receive contributions and process service requests. Do not assume the online and assisted routes are interchangeable for every government employee category.

Applying online through eNPS
- Open the eNPS registration page and start a new subscriber registration.
- Enter your Aadhaar or PAN details and the other required personal information.
- Make the initial contribution required to complete registration.
- Choose eSign if you want a paperless process. Protean CRA describes eSign as the option that makes registration fully paperless.
- Save the acknowledgement generated at the end of the process, since you will need it to track the application.
Protean CRA says online registration can be completed in a few minutes. Treat that as the process time, not a guarantee, because verification can still require follow-up if your details do not match your documents.
Applying through a PoP
- Choose a PFRDA-registered PoP. You can register online or in person through it.
- Obtain the current Subscriber Registration Form (CSRF) from the PoP or PFRDA’s website and complete it in full.
- Attach the KYC documents for your category (see the next section).
- Submit the form and documents at the PoP service branch (POP-SP). Make any initial contribution at the same time if the PoP requires it.
- Keep the 17-digit receipt number the POP-SP gives you. You will use it to check status.
Government employees covered by NPS
Mandatorily covered government employees generally do not start from a PoP or a personal eNPS login. Instead:

- Submit the completed CSRF and supporting documents to your DDO.
- The DDO forwards the authorised application through the appropriate office to CRA.
- If your PRAN is generated online, Protean CRA says it must then be shifted under your associated Nodal Office using Form IIS-1.
Because forms and routing vary by department, confirm the current form and process with your Nodal Office before you submit anything.
Documents to prepare
PFRDA lists different documents for resident individuals, NRIs and OCI applicants. The table shows the list for each category as PFRDA states it.

PFRDA points applicants to the subscriber registration form for the complete list of acceptable proofs. Check the form for the year you are applying in, and make sure the name, date of birth and address on your KYC documents match the details you enter, because mismatches are the most common reason for delay.

Processing and PRAN generation
For a PoP application, Protean CRA says the form is scrutinised and the PRAN is generated. The PRAN itself is assigned at this stage, before any card is physically printed.

Card printing and dispatch
Protean CRA reports that the physical PRAN card is printed and dispatched within 10 working days after CRA receives a duly completed registration form. This figure appears in CRA’s own process description, and the FAQ does not state the year it was published, so treat it as an expected window rather than a guarantee. Delivery can take longer in remote locations or where documents need correction.
CRA says it sends email and SMS alerts after PRAN generation, and it sends dispatch information when the PRAN kit is sent. Make sure your registered mobile number and email are correct.
Tracking your application
- If you applied through a PoP, use the 17-digit receipt number from the POP-SP.
- If your application went directly to CRA, use the acknowledgement number CRA assigns.
- Keep the receipt or acknowledgement until you have the PRAN card or ePRAN in hand.
PRAN card versus NPS account types
Your PRAN is attached to your subscriber record, and the account type determines what you can do with it. PFRDA describes two:
- Tier I is the default individual pension account.
- Tier II is an optional investment account. You can open it only if you are an active Tier I subscriber. PFRDA says Tier II allows withdrawals at any time, and it is not eligible for tax benefits.
The PRAN card does not change with your account type. It is only the record of your subscriber details.
Common application problems and how to fix them
- Documents do not match. If the name, address or other details on your KYC documents differ from what you entered, correct the record through the PoP or Protean CRA before expecting processing to continue.
- Wrong route. Government employees who apply through a PoP or personal eNPS login may find the application must be routed through their DDO and Nodal Office instead. Confirm your category first.
- Online-generated PRAN not moved. For government employees, a PRAN generated online must be shifted under the Nodal Office using Form IIS-1. Without that step, the record stays on the wrong workflow.
- Lost receipt or acknowledgement. Without the 17-digit receipt or CRA acknowledgement number, status checks are harder. Save a copy of it at submission.
- Expecting the card before PRAN generation. The PRAN is generated first and the card follows. A missing card does not necessarily mean the account was not created.
Portals, forms and procedures can change. Before you act, confirm the current steps on the eNPS platform, with a PoP, or with your Nodal Office.
