In the 2023/24 League Two season, Wrexham had the highest estimated total squad value of the three clubs at €8.70m on Transfermarkt’s market-value table. Stockport County was third of the 24 clubs at €7.90m, and Notts County was eleventh at €5.40m. Stockport went on to win the league, Wrexham finished second, and Notts County finished fourteenth. Those figures describe estimated player market values, not money spent, wages paid, or club budgets, and the gap between value rank and league position is the most useful part of the story.
Where each club ranks on squad value
Transfermarkt’s League Two 2023/24 season page lists clubs in order of total market value. That page is the source of the valuation, squad size and average age figures below. The final league positions and points come from the separate final table on Transfermarkt for the same season.
| Club | Transfermarkt total market value | Market-value rank (of 24) | Squad size (listed) | Average age (listed) | Final league position | Final points |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wrexham AFC | €8.70m | 1st | 40 | 27.6 | 2nd | 88 |
| Stockport County | €7.90m | 3rd | 48 | 24.6 | 1st | 92 |
| Notts County | €5.40m | 11th | 35 | 26.7 | 14th | 61 |
Milton Keynes Dons also played in League Two that season and sat between Wrexham and Stockport on the value table at €8.13m, making them second on value. The same Transfermarkt table gives no squad size or average age for them in the figures used here, so they are left out of the comparison columns.
Why the value order and the league table did not match
Value rank and final position were not the same ordering. Stockport was third on estimated squad value but finished first with 92 points. Wrexham, first on value, finished second with 88 points. Notts County was eleventh on value and finished fourteenth with 61 points.

The table shows that these two measures moved differently in 2023/24. It does not show why. Estimated squad value cannot explain a league finish on its own, and nothing in the Transfermarkt figures links the valuation to results.
What the Transfermarkt figures measure
The €8.70m, €8.13m, €7.90m and €5.40m figures are Transfermarkt’s estimated total market values for each club’s squad, as shown on its 2023/24 League Two season page. They are estimates. They are not:

Treat the totals as a comparative gauge of how Transfermarkt rates the players on each squad, and keep it separate from the club’s finances.
Squad size and average age as context
Two other figures on the same page help explain why a club total should not be read as a simple measure of player quality:

- Squad size. Stockport had 48 listed players, Wrexham 40 and Notts County 35. A larger squad can carry a larger total value even when individual players are not more valuable.
- Average age. Stockport’s listed average age was 24.6, Notts County’s 26.7 and Wrexham’s 27.6. Age affects how Transfermarkt values players, but the page does not state how much weight it gives to age in any club’s total.
The Transfermarkt page does not show that squad size or age caused any club’s valuation, and this article does not claim that either did.
How to check these figures yourself
- Open Transfermarkt and find the League Two 2023/24 season page.
- Read the club list, which is ordered by total market value, and note each club’s position in that order.
- Note the squad size and average age shown for each club.
- Open the final League Two 2023/24 table for the same season to compare league positions and points.
Market values on Transfermarkt change as players move, sign or change status. A later season page, or the same page checked on a different date, may show different totals and different rankings. Quote the figures with the season and the date you checked them.

Keeping the measures apart
The comparison works best when each measure is kept on its own axis:
- Estimated total squad market value: Transfermarkt’s rating of the squad, in euros.
- Squad size and average age: descriptive counts from the same squad table.
- Final league position and points: sporting outcome from the final table.
Mixing these axes is where most misreadings happen. A high squad value does not guarantee a high finish, and a low value does not mean a club lacked quality on the pitch. For 2023/24, the three clubs show that the two measures can diverge, which is the most accurate conclusion the figures support.
