Sport Republic’s control dates to its 2022 acquisition of Gao Jisheng’s majority stake. BBC Sport reported at the time that Sport Republic acquired 80% of Southampton and Liebherr retained 20%. A 2025 BBC report in Serbian quoted Šolak saying, “But selling the club was never on my mind.” He described a ten-year project to develop Southampton commercially and financially, while saying he might invite partners to join if the club returned to the Premier League. Those comments describe his stated intentions at that time; they are not a guarantee about future plans or proof that he has since received no approaches. The chief executive’s comments in September 2026
A September 2026 Yahoo Sports article carrying Daily Echo reporting relayed CEO Phil Parsons saying he did not believe Šolak was looking to sell and describing his commitment as “higher than ever.” This is secondary reporting of Parsons’s view, not an announcement of a sale process or a direct confirmation that no private approach has occurred. Official statements in 2026
In a 12 May 2026 statement, Southampton’s CEO said Šolak continued to support the club financially. On 7 October 2026, the club quoted Šolak responding to an independent panel’s FA hearing decision: “I’m pleased that the independent panel has come to a decision and that we have an outcome.” That remark concerned the hearing, not a takeover. When assessing a new Southampton sale story, distinguish confirmed information from speculation by checking:
- Who is making the claim: a club or owner statement is different from a report citing unnamed sources or relaying another outlet’s reporting.
- What has happened: expressions of interest, discussions about investment and a formal offer are not interchangeable.
- What is actually proposed: a possible partner may seek a minority stake, while a takeover implies a change of control. The stake sought, price and financing need separate confirmation.
- Whether the club or owner has acknowledged it: absent such confirmation, describe an offer as reported or unconfirmed rather than established fact.
