Re:

Which DEXs Could Challenge Uniswap and PancakeSwap?

Aerodrome, Orca and Raydium are credible ecosystem-specific challengers to Uniswap and PancakeSwap. Volume rankings vary by period, methodology and whether spot or derivatives are counted.

Aerodrome, Orca and Raydium are among the most plausible challengers, but the evidence does not support predicting that any one of them will overtake Uniswap or PancakeSwap. They compete from different ecosystems, and Hyperliquid belongs in a separate comparison when derivatives are involved. The answer depends on the market, measurement window and whether you mean spot swaps or perpetual trading.

Who is best placed to challenge the leaders?

There is no defensible probability estimate for which DEX will lead next. A better way to answer is to identify venues with meaningful activity in growing ecosystems, then check whether their volume and liquidity gains persist across comparable periods.

CoinGecko’s monthly comparison shows how quickly the top two can trade places: Uniswap led in August 2025 after PancakeSwap had led in June. The figures below use different sources and periods, so they should not be read as one continuous market-share series.

Venue or group Evidence and period What it suggests
Uniswap CoinGecko measured 35.9% of DEX trading volume in August 2025. Its August 2025–January 2026 comparison recorded $542.6 billion in volume. It remained a leading venue across both cited comparisons, although the monthly study shows leadership can shift.
PancakeSwap CoinGecko measured 29.5% of DEX trading volume in August 2025 and $548.4 billion over August 2025–January 2026. Separately, PancakeSwap said it had 37.84% of total DEX trading volume for 2025. It was close to Uniswap in CoinGecko’s six-month comparison. Its full-year share is the protocol’s own reported figure, not a directly interchangeable CoinGecko result.
Aerodrome CoinGecko measured 7.4% of DEX trading volume in August 2025. DefiLlama’s dashboard snapshot accessed October 8, 2026, displayed $14.62 billion in its 30-day volume column. A prominent Base-linked spot competitor, but still well below the two leaders in the cited snapshots.
Orca CoinGecko measured 6.6% of DEX trading volume in August 2025. DefiLlama displayed $8.073 billion in its 30-day column on October 8, 2026. A significant Solana venue; its prospects are tied in part to the broader activity of that ecosystem.
Raydium DefiLlama displayed $9.218 billion in its 30-day column on October 8, 2026. CoinGecko measured 4.1% of DEX trading volume in August 2025. Another important Solana venue, with a lower August 2025 share than Orca in CoinGecko’s comparison.
Hyperliquid CoinGecko measured 6.9% of DEX trading volume in August 2025. DefiLlama displayed $4.596 billion in its 30-day column on October 8, 2026. Include it in an onchain-exchange discussion, but separate perpetuals from spot AMMs when comparing market leadership.

DefiLlama’s October 8, 2026 figures are a dated dashboard snapshot, not a forecast or a guarantee of current rank. Its definitions and chain coverage matter, and the dashboard can change after that date. CoinGecko’s figures likewise describe their stated periods, not today’s market share.

Why challengers are emerging on different chains

The competitive field is increasingly distributed across ecosystems rather than organized around one universal successor. DefiLlama Research reported that Solana spot DEX volume rose from $693.6 billion in 2024 to $1.47 trillion in 2025. In the same annual account, BNB Chain volume rose from $262.4 billion to $670.8 billion, and Base rose from $196.7 billion to $381.2 billion.

Those chain-level totals are not the same as an individual protocol’s market share. They show where activity expanded, not which venue will capture it permanently. DefiLlama Research describes greater protocol fragmentation and a shift from choosing a pool manually toward aggregators and intent-based execution. If that pattern continues, a trader may reach liquidity across several venues without treating any single DEX as the sole destination.

Base: Aerodrome

Aerodrome is a Base-linked candidate with a notable place in the cited volume comparisons. Its position makes it worth watching as Base activity grows, but a strong snapshot does not establish that it can displace a multichain incumbent.

Solana: Orca and Raydium

Orca and Raydium are contenders within Solana’s active DEX market. The chain’s aggregate growth creates room for its venues, but does not settle which protocol will retain liquidity or route the most trades over time.

Derivatives: Hyperliquid

Hyperliquid can be relevant to the broader question of onchain exchange competition, but perpetual contracts are a different product from spot token swaps. A headline volume comparison that mixes the two can exaggerate or obscure the position of a spot DEX.

What volume rankings do—and do not—tell you

Trading volume is useful for tracking activity, but it is not a complete measure of durable dominance. The cited sources use different windows and reporting bases: CoinGecko’s monthly market-share figures, its six-month cumulative comparison, PancakeSwap’s self-reported annual share, and a live dashboard snapshot should be kept distinct rather than merged.

Liquidity quality also matters. A Dune study sampled roughly 200 active pools each on Uniswap v3, PancakeSwap v3, Aerodrome Slipstream and Uniswap v4, using 26 weekly snapshots from January 6 through June 30, 2026. It found capital-weighted out-of-range liquidity of about 30%, while the median pool-level share ranged from 14% to 23%, depending on venue. Out-of-range liquidity is capital not currently within the active trading range of a concentrated-liquidity pool; the study’s distinction between capital-weighted and median pool results means neither figure should be treated as a universal rate for every pool.

Dune also says its pool set was fixed based on recent activity, creating a survivorship tilt. Its standard tables did not cleanly capture Aerodrome Slipstream dollar volume, so it ranked that venue by swaps instead. This is a selected-pool analysis, not a comprehensive league table of all DEX liquidity or execution quality.

How to judge whether a challenger is gaining ground

For a meaningful comparison, use a consistent scope and window rather than a single high-volume day. Check the following before treating a venue as an emerging market leader:

  • Same product: compare spot swaps with spot swaps; assess perpetuals separately or state clearly when derivatives are included.
  • Same period: track multiple monthly or quarterly windows and look for sustained share gains, not just a spike.
  • Comparable coverage: check which chains, protocols and transaction types a dashboard or report includes.
  • Liquidity and execution: consider whether pools have usable depth and how routing or intent-based systems affect where trades are executed.
  • Source and method: distinguish independent analytics from a protocol’s own retrospective, and keep each publisher’s definitions attached to its figures.

On the evidence available, the most useful shortlist is ecosystem-specific: Aerodrome for Base, Orca and Raydium for Solana, and Hyperliquid for a separate derivatives comparison. None has established a universal path to replacing both incumbents; the more plausible near-term picture is continued competition among several chains, venues and routing layers.
