Accounting organizes, measures, analyzes, and communicates financial information. Finance uses that information—along with other evidence—to make decisions about money, funding, investment, credit, and risk. They are distinct but closely connected: accounting helps explain an organization’s financial position and activity, while finance often uses that picture to assess what to do next.

What is accounting?

Accounting is an information process, not just bookkeeping. It turns financial activity into records and reports that people can use to understand performance, make decisions, and assess accountability. The process can include recording transactions, preparing statements, analyzing results, and explaining what the information means.

Different people use accounting information for different purposes. Managers may use it to set goals and assess results; investors and creditors may use reports to evaluate performance and financial position; regulators may use information in carrying out oversight responsibilities.

What is finance?

Finance concerns decisions about how money is obtained, allocated, invested, and managed in light of expected performance and risk. Financial analysis evaluates accounting information and other relevant evidence to support economic decisions. For example, a lender may focus on whether a borrower can repay, while an equity investor may be more concerned with profitability and value. The same financial figures can matter to both, but they do not answer every decision question by themselves.

What is the difference between accounting and finance?

A useful introductory distinction is that accounting organizes and reports financial activity, while finance interprets information to evaluate choices. It is a teaching distinction, not a strict boundary: accountants analyze information and may advise decision-makers, and finance professionals rely on accounting records and reporting assumptions.

What are the main branches of accounting?

Financial accounting

Financial accounting measures and reports an organization’s performance using common reporting conventions. Its reports are primarily intended for external stakeholders, including owners, investors, creditors, and government entities.

Managerial accounting

Managerial accounting supports decisions inside an organization. It can combine financial and nonfinancial information to help managers set goals, decide what information they need, and assess results.

Auditing, tax, cost accounting, internal controls, consulting, accounting information systems, and financial analysis are related practice and career areas. They are not interchangeable names for all accounting work.

What basic accounting reports should you know?

Three core reports offer different views of an organization’s finances. A statement covering a period and a statement showing a position on a particular date answer different questions.

  • Balance sheet (statement of financial position): shows assets, liabilities, and equity at a specific date. The accounting equation is assets = liabilities + equity. Assets are resources, liabilities are obligations, and equity is the residual ownership interest.
  • Income statement: reports financial performance over a period.
  • Statement of cash flows: reports cash movements over a period. Cash generation and accounting profit are not the same measure, so the statement helps answer a different question from the income statement.

Reporting details and classifications depend on the applicable accounting framework. A report is evidence for analysis, not an automatic answer about what an investor, lender, or manager should do.

Do accounting rules apply the same way everywhere?

No. Accounting standards and regulatory requirements depend on jurisdiction, entity type, and purpose. Introductory U.S.-oriented materials commonly discuss U.S. GAAP, FASB, and the SEC; those references should not be treated as universal rules. Tax requirements, professional licensing, reporting standards, and filing obligations also vary. For a real filing or compliance decision, check the rules that apply to the relevant location and organization.
