Tilman Fertitta’s documented link to Donald Trump is political: Trump nominated Fertitta to be U.S. ambassador to Italy and San Marino, and the Senate confirmed him on 29 April 2025. Fertitta was not identified as the buyer when Sheffield Wednesday’s takeover was completed in May 2026. The English Football League named Arise Capital Partners, led by David Storch, as the club’s new owner.
What is Fertitta’s connection to Trump?
It is a public appointment, not evidence of a Sheffield Wednesday business partnership. In a 1 April 2025 opening statement to the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Fertitta said: “My name is Tilman Fertitta, and I am President Trump’s nominee to be the United States Ambassador to Italy and San Marino.” The Senate confirmed him on 29 April 2025, according to The Texas Tribune. The nomination is also documented in Fertitta’s Senate testimony.
Who completed the Sheffield Wednesday takeover?
On 2 May 2026, the EFL confirmed that administrators had concluded an agreement transferring Sheffield Wednesday’s assets to Arise Capital Partners LLC. The consortium was led by David Storch, alongside Michael Storch and Tom Costin. The EFL said Wednesday was no longer in administration and would face a budget restriction for the following two seasons. The EFL’s statement and BBC Sport’s report identify Arise as the completed buyer.
Was Fertitta involved in the sale?
The available reports do not establish that Fertitta bought the club, led the winning consortium, or had a role in the completed transaction. The political connection between Fertitta and Trump should not be treated as evidence of a link between Fertitta and Wednesday’s new owners.

There was an earlier, separate takeover bid led by James Bord. BBC Sport reported on 25 February 2026 that his consortium had withdrawn its bid. A Sheffield Wednesday news report on 25 September 2026 said Bord had agreed to buy Bordeaux; that is a separate transaction and does not change who acquired Wednesday.

The phrase “takeover edges closer” no longer reflects the status as of 8 October 2026. The EFL announced the completed asset transfer and the club’s exit from administration on 2 May 2026. The relevant distinction is straightforward: Fertitta’s connection is to Trump’s ambassadorial appointment; Arise Capital Partners is the buyer named in the completed Sheffield Wednesday deal.
