Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe safest way to check whether a hard disk drive (HDD) is failing is to protect your data first, then review the drive’s SMART status, then run the manufacturer’s diagnostic utility and follow its instructions. A warning means you should copy important files immediately, even if the drive still opens and a test passes. A passing result is a snapshot of the drive’s condition on the day you tested it. It is not a guarantee that the drive will keep working.
Back up before you run any diagnostic
Seagate advises users to back up their data before running drive tests. If SMART has already reported an error, Seagate says to back up as soon as possible. Diagnostics are read-oriented checks, but they put the drive under load, and a drive that is already failing can worsen during testing. Copying your most important files first removes that risk from the decision.
A separate external HDD can serve as the backup destination. Buying one does not repair the suspect drive, and it does not change the suspect drive’s health. It only gives you a second copy. For guidance on the diagnostic side, see Seagate’s article on testing a desktop or laptop hard drive that may be defective.
Check the SMART status
SMART (Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology) is monitoring built into most HDDs. It records health indicators and supports the drive’s self-tests. Western Digital’s support article on SMART describes how the feature works.

What SMART reports
SMART reports a set of attributes, each with a value and a threshold. The meaning of each attribute is defined by the drive vendor, and Western Digital states that raw-value meanings depend on the drive vendor. A single raw count, such as a number of reallocated sectors, cannot be read the same way across every HDD model or brand. Judge a drive by its overall SMART status and by the manufacturer’s guidance for that model, not by comparing raw numbers across brands.
What a SMART error means
Seagate’s support article My system reported a S.M.A.R.T. error on the drive is direct on this point. It states: “A S.M.A.R.T. error is a near-term prediction of drive failure.” It also explains that a drive can appear to function normally, or even pass a diagnostic, while the SMART warning remains meaningful. Treat a SMART error as a reason to protect data and plan a replacement, not as a false alarm to be cleared.

SMART is a prediction tool, not a complete failure detector. Do not assume that a clean SMART status means the drive cannot fail, and do not assume that SMART warns about every failure.
Run the manufacturer’s diagnostic
Use the utility that matches your drive’s brand. For Seagate drives, SeaTools provides SMART checks and drive self-tests. Its manual describes the Short DST as a diagnostic built into the drive’s firmware. The steps below are general; the menu labels in current SeaTools versions can change, so follow the instructions in the SeaTools Bootable User Manual.

- Confirm you have a current backup of the files you cannot afford to lose.
- Connect the drive you want to test and make sure you have selected the correct disk. Testing the wrong drive produces a result that tells you nothing about the suspect drive.
- Check the SMART status first, using the SMART check option in SeaTools.
- If the drive reports no SMART error, run the Short DST (short self-test) from the drive self-test option.
- Record the result and the date. Compare later results against this one.
- If the test fails or SMART reports an error, stop testing and move to the protective steps below.
For drives from other manufacturers, Western Digital’s OEM SMART guidance is the starting point for its own drives. Use the utility and documentation from the company that made your specific drive.
How to read the results
Results fall into different categories, and they answer different questions. The table below separates them so you do not treat a passing test as a complete health report.

| Check | What it tells you | What it does not tell you |
|---|---|---|
| SMART status | Whether the drive’s monitored indicators currently report a warning or error | Whether a failure will happen, or when |
| Short self-test | A quick firmware-run check of the drive’s condition at the time it runs | Whether the drive will remain reliable after the test |
| Longer self-test | A more extended check where the manufacturer offers one for that model | Availability on every model; check the utility’s options for your drive |
| Passing result today | The drive met the tested criteria on that date | Future reliability |
| SMART error or failed test | A current warning that the drive should be treated as at risk | An exact time before failure |
Only the first and fourth rows of this table can be read as a current status. The other rows describe what a test measured, and they stop describing the drive once the test ends.
What to do if a warning appears
- Copy important files to a separate drive as soon as possible. Do not wait for a scheduled test.
- Stop repeated diagnostics on the suspect drive. Each additional run adds more load.
- Check whether the drive is still under warranty and contact the manufacturer’s support about replacement.
- Do not try to repair the drive through SMART. SMART reports a condition; it does not fix one.
- Plan to replace the drive, and keep the backup until the replacement is in use and verified.
Warning signs that call for protecting data first
The following signs are general risk-reduction guidance rather than a finding from a manufacturer. No manufacturer document cited here defines a list of symptoms or a universal timeline from warning to failure. Still, if the drive makes unusual sounds, disconnects, slows down noticeably, or returns read errors, copy your data before doing anything else and avoid repeated stress testing.

What a passing check does and does not mean
A passing SMART status or a passing self-test means the drive met the criteria it was tested against at that moment. It does not guarantee that the drive will not fail next week or next year. A healthy display on the computer means the drive is responding, not that its internal condition is sound. The most reliable habit is regular backups, with a diagnostic check as a supplement to those backups rather than a replacement for them.
If you need extra backup capacity for this purpose, a separate external HDD is a reasonable choice. It protects your files only if you copy them to it and keep the copy current.
Dates and test results should be recorded, because a drive’s condition is only comparable over time when the checks are repeated under the same conditions.
When you buy a replacement, keep the old drive’s backup until the new one is working and verified. Replacing a drive without a current copy of its data is the most common way a warning turns into a loss.
