Most matrimony sites use the same basic method. They compare the details in your profile with the partner preferences you have set, and they compare other members’ profiles with the preferences those members have set. What you see is a shortlist of candidates, sorted into categories. It is a starting point for your own review, not a judgement that someone is compatible with you, and the platforms’ published material does not promise a marriage outcome.
The three kinds of matches you will see
Results usually fall into categories built from that preference comparison. Labels differ between sites, so check the wording in your own account. BharatMatrimony’s FAQ describes two directions of matching and the overlap between them.
Profiles that fit your criteria
This is the list most members see first. BharatMatrimony’s FAQ describes these profiles as: “These are the profiles of members shortlisted as potential alliances based on your partner preference criteria.” The match runs in one direction. It shows that someone’s profile fits what you asked for. It does not show that you fit what they asked for.
Members looking for you
This runs the other way. BharatMatrimony describes these as members whose own preference criteria match your profile. Because the list depends on what other members have asked for, it can change without any edit to your own profile.

Mutual matches
A mutual match requires both sides to fit: each member’s partner preferences match the other member’s profile. It is the narrowest category, so it is normally the shortest list. It confirms overlap on the criteria both people stated, and nothing beyond that.
How a recommendation is produced
Platform descriptions point to the same general sequence. Internal scoring is not published, and menus differ between sites, so treat these steps as the usual pattern rather than an exact interface map.
- Create a profile. Enter the fields the platform asks for. Jeevansathi’s terms name age, contact details, preferences, cultural background, occupation and lifestyle information. Expected result: the platform holds the data it needs to compare you with others.
- Set partner-preference criteria. Choose the criteria the platform offers for this purpose. Expected result: these criteria become the filter applied to other members’ profiles.
- The platform compares your data and criteria with other members. Expected result: profiles that fit your criteria, members whose criteria fit you, and mutual matches are generated.
- Edit your criteria if the list is not useful. BharatMatrimony says changing partner preferences may change the results. Expected result: a different set of candidates.
- Review, shortlist and communicate. Platforms let you review profiles, shortlist people and use communication features, and some of those features are paid. Expected result: a shortlist that still needs your own checks.
What each platform says beyond your preferences
BharatMatrimony: results follow your settings
BharatMatrimony’s terms tie results directly to the criteria you set: “The profile search conducted by any BM member and the matches shown thereof are automatically generated by BM, and based on the partner preference set by you.” The terms cited here name partner preferences as the input and do not list other signals.
Jeevansathi: profile data, preferences and activity
Jeevansathi’s terms say its collected user data is used in a matching program. The wording is: “The User Data so collected is entered in a program especially devised for matching profiles and to provide matches for Users based on their pre-selected partner preferences criteria.” The same terms add that user activity may be used to make relevant suggestions and recommendations, so activity is a stated input alongside profile data and preferences.

Matrimony.com’s 2019–20 annual report
Matrimony.com’s annual report for 2019–20 described an in-house Intelligent Matchmaking Algorithm, a home-grown machine-learning system that computes results in real time using big-data technologies and data science. Read this as the company’s description of that system at that date. It is not a current technical audit, and it does not establish how any particular site matches members today.
What is not disclosed
None of the sources above explain the following:
- the weight given to each criterion or signal;
- how much user activity changes a recommendation;
- whether every member sees the same ordering of candidates;
- a formula that would let you compare one platform’s recommendations with another’s.
Two sites that both match on stated preferences can therefore return different lists, and the published material does not explain why.
Comparing the two platforms
Compare platforms on the points their documents actually address. The table below covers the two platforms whose terms, FAQs and privacy material describe matching in enough detail to compare.
| Comparison point | BharatMatrimony | Jeevansathi |
|---|---|---|
| What members set | Partner preference criteria | Pre-selected partner preferences |
| One-way and mutual matches | Labelled separately: profiles that fit your criteria, members looking for you, and mutual matches | Not stated in its terms |
| Data beyond preferences that the terms cite | None named; results are described as generated from your partner preferences | Profile data, plus user activity that may inform relevant suggestions |
| Visibility and contact controls | Privacy options control profile details and who can view or contact members | Not stated in its terms or privacy policy |
Official materials for both platforms describe paid communication features and assisted services. The terms and FAQ do not give specific prices, so check current pricing and refund terms before paying.

Privacy: what the matching uses
The profile fields listed in step one are the same ones matching works from, so blank or vague fields give the platform less to compare. Sharing is a separate decision, and the following precautions apply:
- Keep contact details off your profile until you have decided that a match is worth pursuing.
- Keep bank, card and account details out of profiles and messages entirely.
- Review current policy wording and your settings, because practices can change.
Verification and safety
A shortlist is not a check on the person. BharatMatrimony’s terms tell users to verify profile details themselves, naming marital status, education, finances, occupation, character and health information. Jeevansathi’s privacy policy describes possible requests for additional documents to verify profiles and protect users. Neither document says every profile is checked, so assume verification is partial.
- Protect your username and password. BharatMatrimony’s safe-search guidance advises this.
- Meet a prospective match in a public setting. The same guidance advises this.
- Never send money to someone you have met through a matchmaking site, and never share bank or card details with them.
Using the lists without over-reading them
- Start with mutual matches to see the overlap both sides have stated.
- Then widen to profiles that fit your criteria and to members looking for you, to see how far your criteria reach.
- Change one criterion at a time and note how the list changes, since BharatMatrimony says changing preferences may change results.
Limits of the evidence
No success rate, match-volume figure or accuracy percentage appears in the platform documents or the 2019–20 annual report discussed here, so this article cites none. Nothing in those sources shows that a matching system makes marriage more likely, and this article does not claim it.
An academic audit of matrimony matching appears in search listings, but its full methodology is not available here. This article therefore draws no conclusions about bias in these systems.
Terms, FAQs and privacy policies change, and the annual report describes a system as it stood in 2019–20. Check the live pages before relying on any specific wording.
