In a January 2025 interview, former Birmingham City goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak welcomed the club’s new ownership and investment, saying Birmingham had “a big chance for promotion.” He was expressing optimism about the club’s position in League One at the time—not guaranteeing promotion or making a forecast about Birmingham’s present-day prospects.
What did Tomasz Kuszczak say?
In an interview published by 888sport on 24 January 2025, Kuszczak was asked how much he would have liked to play for Birmingham City under its new owners. He said he had enjoyed his time at the club, praised the supporters’ passion and welcomed the investment and ambition he saw in the new ownership.
His assessment of the promotion opportunity was: “They have a big chance for promotion and then you look at other teams who have won League One, they have had a good season the following year, so lots of optimism for sure.” Read the 888sport interview.
Immediately before that, he said: “The Club really needed some good investment and Ownership who were ambitious, and these new Owners are that.” Both statements were his opinion in the context of the interview, rather than a guarantee about results.

What was the context for his promotion comment?
Kuszczak made the remark while Birmingham were in League One, after relegation from the Championship. His reference to teams that had won League One and then had a good following season was part of his reasoning for optimism. It should be read as a view about the opportunity he saw then, not as a current prediction.
What was known about the ownership and its ambitions?
Ownership details and public plans need to be kept separate from Kuszczak’s praise. On 8 May 2023, BBC Sport reported that American financier Tom Wagner had agreed to buy a 45.64% stake in Birmingham City through Shelby Companies Limited. The report said the transaction was subject to English Football League and Hong Kong Stock Exchange approval and completion; it records the proposed transaction at that date, not the club’s exact current ownership structure. In August 2023, Wagner told the BBC that the owners had no fixed time frame for their objectives and wanted success across the men’s team, women’s team and academy. He described the work as a long journey. Those were stated aims, not a timetable or a promise of a particular result. BBC Sport’s interview with Wagner.

Later reporting offers context, but it does not establish that ownership alone caused sporting results. BBC Sport reported that Birmingham spent £25m after relegation and finished the League One season covered by its 2025 article 19 points ahead of second-placed Wrexham. Those are dated spending and league-margin figures, not evidence by themselves of what produced the outcome. BBC Sport’s 2025 season coverage.

In June 2025, the BBC reported Wagner’s stated goal of Premier League promotion in the 2026–27 season and his proposed Sports Quarter, which included a new stadium with a planned capacity of 62,000. The stadium was a proposal, not an existing or completed venue. The article documents the goal and plan as reported in 2025; it does not establish their status on 8 October 2026. What Kuszczak’s claim does—and does not—mean
- It means: Kuszczak was positive about Birmingham’s investment, ownership and promotion opportunity in January 2025.
- It does not mean: the owners guaranteed promotion, Kuszczak spoke for the club, or his comment establishes Birmingham’s current league position or ownership arrangements.
- For context: the owners’ public ambitions and later reported results are separate evidence. Their timing alongside each other does not prove that one caused the other.
