As of October 8, 2026, Box Office Mojo’s worldwide lifetime chart lists Avatar: Fire and Ash at $1,485,999,890, about $14 million short of $1.5 billion. The film was not shut out of the Oscars. It earned two nominations at the 98th Academy Awards and won the Visual Effects award. The box-office shortfall and the awards result are separate facts, and the available evidence does not show that one caused the other.
Where the worldwide total comes from
Box Office Mojo splits the chart figure into domestic and international grosses. Most of the money came from outside the United States and Canada, which is worth remembering whenever a headline treats worldwide gross as a domestic result.

|---|---|---|
| Domestic | $404,340,010 | about 27% |
| International | $1,081,659,880 | about 73% |
| Worldwide | $1,485,999,890 | 100% |
The shares above are rounded calculations from the chart figures. The gap to $1.5 billion is $14,000,110. The $1.5 billion mark is a round-number benchmark that trade coverage tends to use, not a contractual or industry threshold.
On the same chart, the film ranks 18th worldwide, between Top Gun: Maverick and Frozen II. Database figures like these can be revised as late reports come in, so treat the number as the chart’s current reading rather than a sealed final tally.
#1 Best Overall
- Return to Pandora for the third chapter of Marine turned Na’vi leader Jake Sully and his family. Reeling from one death, the Sullys set out to prevent another — aided by the Wind Traders. But on the way, they’re attacked by the Ash People, who blame Eywa for their ravaged home. Warning: Some flashing-lights scenes may affect photosensitive viewers.
The $1 billion milestone came earlier
On January 4, 2026, The Walt Disney Company announced that the film had surpassed $1 billion at the global box office, making it the third film in the franchise to do so. That was a dated milestone announcement, not a statement of the film’s final gross. The chart total above is the figure to use for the full worldwide lifetime number.
Was the film snubbed at the Oscars?
No. The record for the 98th Academy Awards is clear:
Rank #2
- Return to Pandora for the third chapter of Marine turned Na’vi leader Jake Sully and his family. Reeling from one death, the Sullys set out to prevent another — aided by the Wind Traders. But on the way, they’re attacked by the Ash People, who blame Eywa for their ravaged home. Warning: Some flashing-lights scenes may affect photosensitive viewers.
- Costume Design: nominated. Avatar.com names Deborah L. Scott as the nominee.
- Visual Effects: nominated and won. Avatar.com names Joe Letteri, Richard Baneham, Eric Saindon, and Daniel Barrett. 20th Century Studios lists the film as the Visual Effects winner.
The nominations were announced on January 22, 2026. The Academy’s ceremony took place on March 15, 2026, and honored films released during 2025. Avatar.com’s announcement describes the nominations this way: “The third film in James Cameron’s beloved franchise has earned two Oscar® nominations at the 98th Academy Awards, honoring the incredible artists who helped bring the world of Avatar to life.” That is studio promotional language, so read it as the studio’s view rather than independent assessment.
A more accurate headline would be that a film with a major award still finished below $1.5 billion. “Snub” implies the film was ignored, and the record does not support that.

Did the awards cause the shortfall?
The evidence does not establish a causal link, and the timing alone cannot settle the question. Box Office Mojo lists the film’s release span as December 19, 2025 to April 16, 2026, so the nominations and the ceremony both fell inside its listed run. Whether awards attention added or failed to add ticket sales cannot be measured from a lifetime total. Weekly and market-level data would be needed to test that, and the sources consulted do not provide it. Until that data exists, present the awards and the gross as parallel facts.
Why a $400 million budget does not tell you profit
Box Office Mojo lists a reported budget of $400 million for the film. That number is reported, not audited, and it is not proof of profitability. Readers often try to subtract budget from gross as a shortcut. Doing that here would produce roughly $1.09 billion, but that figure is not profit, because it leaves out the costs and revenue splits that determine what a studio actually keeps.

| Item | Figure | What it tells you | What it does not tell you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Worldwide lifetime gross | $1,485,999,890 (Box Office Mojo) | Total ticket revenue recorded across markets | The studio’s share after exhibitor and distribution terms |
| Reported budget | $400 million (Box Office Mojo, reported) | The production cost figure reported for the film | Marketing, distribution, or other costs, and whether it is audited |
| Profitability | Not stated in the sources | Nothing established from these two figures alone | Whether the film turned a profit |
How to check the figure yourself
- Open Box Office Mojo and search for Avatar: Fire and Ash.
- Open the title’s worldwide lifetime gross chart and note the date you accessed it.
- Read the domestic and international figures separately instead of treating the worldwide total as one market.
- Check Disney’s January 4, 2026 announcement for the $1 billion milestone and the 20th Century Studios official film page for the award result.
- Recheck the chart before you quote a number, because box-office database totals can change.
Using these sources, you can state the gross, the awards record, and the milestone dates accurately, and avoid turning a round-number miss into a claim about the Academy.
