Un SKU (stock keeping unit, o unidad de mantenimiento de existencias) es un código interno que un negocio asigna a un artículo o variante para identificarlo y controlar su inventario. Si una tienda cuenta y vende una camiseta mediana y otra grande por separado, normalmente necesita un SKU distinto para cada talla. El SKU lo define el negocio: no es lo mismo que un código de barras ni lo sustituye automáticamente.
¿Para qué sirve un SKU?
Un SKU ayuda a reconocer el artículo que se recibe, almacena, cuenta y vende. También permite seguir existencias, elaborar informes de ventas y preparar pedidos con menos confusión. Puede utilizarse en una tienda, un almacén, un catálogo en línea o un centro logístico.
En la documentación de Shopify, los SKU únicos ayudan a distinguir productos y variantes en el seguimiento de existencias y en la preparación de pedidos. La plataforma también permite usarlos en etiquetas para localizar artículos y atender cambios, devoluciones o consultas sobre productos. La etiqueta es opcional: lo importante es que el código esté asociado correctamente al artículo en el sistema que use el negocio.
¿Qué artículos deben tener SKU distintos?
Asigna códigos diferentes a las unidades que el negocio cuenta, vende o gestiona por separado. En una prenda, por ejemplo, talla y color pueden crear variantes distintas; una camiseta mediana azul no debería compartir SKU con una grande azul si se controlan como existencias separadas. Shopify recomienda un SKU único para cada producto y variante dentro de su plataforma.

El nivel de detalle depende de la operación. Si dos presentaciones se reciben, venden y cuentan como una sola unidad de inventario, quizá no requieran códigos distintos en ese sistema. Si se separan para venta o reposición, identificarlas por separado evita que una variante parezca disponible cuando solo hay existencias de otra.
SKU, GTIN, código de barras y otros números
Estos identificadores responden a necesidades diferentes. El SKU organiza el inventario de un negocio; un GTIN pertenece a un sistema global de identificación de artículos comerciales. UPC y EAN son nombres asociados a formatos de GTIN, mientras que el código de barras es una representación gráfica que un escáner puede leer.

GS1 enumera formatos como GTIN-8 para artículos pequeños, GTIN-12 (UPC), GTIN-13 (EAN o JAN) y GTIN-14 para cajas y empaques, además de identificadores para publicaciones como ISBN e ISSN. No todos los GTIN se presentan con la misma simbología ni cada producto necesita que el negocio cree un SKU igual a su GTIN.
Cómo crear un SKU que resulte útil
No hay una estructura universal obligatoria. La empresa elige códigos numéricos o alfanuméricos según lo que facilite su trabajo. Una tienda de ropa podría incluir abreviaturas de categoría, color y talla —por ejemplo, CAM-AZU-M para una camiseta azul mediana—, pero ese es solo un formato ilustrativo, no un estándar. El código debe ser único dentro del inventario que administra el sistema.

- Decide qué controlas por separado. Define si cada talla, color, tamaño de paquete u otra variante necesita existencias propias.
- Elige segmentos y ordénalos. Si el código incluye atributos, documenta qué significa cada segmento y conserva el mismo orden para productos comparables.
- Prioriza la lectura y la búsqueda. Evita espacios, símbolos y caracteres que puedan confundirse, como O con 0 o I con 1. Guiones o guiones bajos pueden separar segmentos.
- Comprueba que cada código sea único. Los duplicados pueden causar errores de seguimiento y problemas con integraciones de terceros.
- Deja espacio para crecer. Escoge una estructura que permita añadir categorías y variantes sin tener que rehacer todos los códigos.
- Guarda cada dato en su campo. Cuando el sistema lo permita, registra el SKU en el campo SKU y el código de barras en el campo correspondiente; Shopify documenta que ambos pueden añadirse al mismo producto.
Los ejemplos de Shopify incluyen segmentos numéricos para atributos de prendas y códigos alfanuméricos para características de bolígrafos. Son maneras de ilustrar una estructura, no reglas que todos los comercios deban copiar. La guía de Shopify en español también describe el campo SKU de su propia plataforma como opcional; eso no significa que una tienda con varias variantes o canales de venta no pueda beneficiarse de una convención interna consistente.

No necesariamente. El SKU permite que el negocio identifique sus existencias; el código de barras puede facilitar la lectura automática de un identificador, como un GTIN. Una operación pequeña puede empezar registrando SKU en una hoja de cálculo o sistema de inventario y asignar códigos de barras solo cuando su proceso de venta, almacenamiento o socios comerciales los requieran. Si usas ambos, mantenlos en campos separados para evitar tratarlos como si fueran el mismo dato.

Errores habituales que conviene evitar
- Usar el mismo SKU para variantes que se cuentan o venden por separado.
- Suponer que el SKU del fabricante, el número de modelo, el número de serie o el GTIN es automáticamente el SKU interno de la tienda.
- Reutilizar un código para otro artículo sin revisar el historial de inventario e integraciones.
- Crear abreviaturas cuyo significado nadie documenta o que cambian de un producto a otro.
- Confundir el número de un GTIN con las barras impresas que lo representan.
