Bristol City’s £60,000-a-week wage saving: what the summer 2026 figures show

The £60,000-a-week saving is an unverified headline. Named salary estimates for three departing players total £26,000 a week, which is not the same as a club-wide saving.

The £60,000-a-week saving cannot be confirmed from the public reporting available. The only individual wage estimates tied to named departures cover three senior players, Mark Sykes, Harry Cornick and Sam Morsy, and add up to £26,000 a week. That is a partial subtotal of estimates, not a verified saving, and it does not show how the £60,000 figure was reached.

What the £60,000 figure claims, and what it leaves out

The headline implies that Bristol City’s wage bill fell by £60,000 a week because of players leaving at the end of their contracts this summer. Reporting does not explain the calculation behind that number. It does not state which players are counted, which season’s wages are used, whether the figure is gross or net, or whether bonuses and employer costs are included. Without those details, the figure cannot be checked against anything.

Where the release picture stands

BBC Sport published a summer 2026 roundup on 7 May 2026 that collated clubs’ released and retained lists, and it included Bristol City among the Championship clubs. The accessible content of that roundup does not give a complete Bristol City list, so it cannot be used to confirm who was released.

A later BBC Sport report, dated 22 May 2026, is the most specific dated account of the club’s position. It said Bristol City had exercised options to keep defender Ross McCrorie until the end of 2026-27 and goalkeeper Lewis Thomas until summer 2027. It also said that:

“No decision has yet been made on the futures of Sam Bell, Harry Cornick, Sam Morsy and Mark Sykes, who are all out of contract this summer, with a club statement saying discussions ‘will occur’ when a new head coach is appointed.”

That sentence records the position on 22 May. Being out of contract at that point did not, by itself, mean a player had been released.

The three salary estimates and the £26,000 subtotal

SalaryLeaks’ 2025/26 Bristol City salary page gives estimated weekly wages for three players who are later listed as departing:

  • Mark Sykes: £12,000 per week
  • Harry Cornick: £9,000 per week
  • Sam Morsy: £5,000 per week

Added together, these come to £12,000 + £9,000 + £5,000 = £26,000 per week. This is arithmetic on three estimates, not a figure published by SalaryLeaks or the club. It also uses the 2025/26 wage level, which may differ from what these players would have earned in 2026/27.

The database states that comprehensive Championship salary data is rarely published, and that many of its figures are informed estimates drawn from reporting and club wage-bill information. None of the three figures is an official or verified contract salary.

Why £26,000 cannot confirm or disprove £60,000

The two numbers may describe different groups of players. The £60,000 headline does not say whether it covers the same three players, a longer list of releases, or a different season. The SalaryLeaks page also gives a 2025/26 squad wage bill of £16.7 million. That is the estimated total cost of the whole squad, not the amount saved by any released player, so it cannot be used to test the £60,000 figure either.

The only defensible statement is that identifiable estimates for three departures reach £26,000 a week, and the remaining part of the £60,000 figure is not explained by the available reporting.

Why a wage estimate is not a cash saving

Even a correct wage figure would overstate the cash the club keeps. A saving depends on several items that the reviewed sources do not establish:

  • Bonuses, image rights and employer contributions, which are not included in a basic weekly wage estimate.
  • Replacement signings, whose wages would offset the saving.
  • Any transfer or compensation fees received for players who moved on.

What would be needed to verify the figure

  1. An official club statement or published list confirming which players were retained and which were released this summer.
  2. The basis of the £60,000 calculation, including the players counted, the season used and whether it is gross or net.
  3. Verified contract wages, not database estimates, for each player included.
  4. Confirmed outcomes for players whose futures were undecided on 22 May 2026, including Sam Bell.

Until those points are published, the most accurate summary is that the headline figure is unverified, and the named wage estimates support only a £26,000-a-week subtotal for three departures.
