The Southampton player linked with a possible Rangers return is Joe Aribo. The reported £70,000-a-week wage is a Capology estimate, not a confirmed contract figure, and the Rangers link cited in January 2026 reporting is pundit backing—not evidence of a bid or negotiations.
Who is the Southampton player linked with Rangers?
It is Joe Aribo, a Southampton midfielder who previously played for Rangers. A January 18, 2026 report by Softmedia said former professional footballer and pundit Marvin Bartley had backed a potential Rangers return on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard in December. That is a pundit’s view; the report does not establish that Rangers made an offer or opened negotiations. Softmedia’s report
Is Joe Aribo really paid £70,000 a week?
Softmedia attributed the £70,000 weekly figure to Capology, which estimates player pay. It is not independently confirmed as Aribo’s contractual wage, and should not be treated as a verified salary or take-home amount. A January 2 supporters’ forum post repeated the estimate but did not provide independent confirmation. Capology
For personal-finance purposes, the distinction matters: an estimated gross wage is not the same as confirmed earnings after tax, deductions, bonuses or other contract terms. The reporting does not establish those details.

What did the report say about Southampton wanting him to leave?
Football League World Southampton fan pundit Martin Sanders expressed the view that Aribo and Sam Edozie should leave in January, citing playing time and wages. Sanders said: “Hopefully they’re going to go this month, both of them really – they’re not going to get any game time and it’ll free up some wages.” He also described Aribo as “one of the higher earners” and said a move could be in the player’s best interests. These are Sanders’s opinions as reported by Softmedia, not an official Southampton position.

Softmedia reported that Aribo’s contract was due to end in summer 2026 and suggested Southampton could receive a fee from a January sale rather than risk losing him as a free agent later. This was secondary reporting, not a primary contract announcement. Because that timing was reported in January 2026, it should not be read as confirmation of his present contract or transfer status.
