An eBay reserve price is a hidden minimum on an auction. If bidding does not reach it, the item does not sell, so the highest bidder can still lose. For sellers, the reserve is an optional paid upgrade on auction-style listings. It can protect a floor price, but it costs money whether or not the item sells, so it works best when used on purpose.
What “Reserve not met” means for buyers
The reserve amount stays hidden from bidders unless the seller chooses to state it. The listing shows only whether the reserve has been met. eBay’s buyer help describes the result directly:
“If you bid below the reserve price, you’ll see a ‘Reserve not met’ message.”

Can the high bidder still lose?
Yes. A bid that is the highest but still below the hidden reserve does not win the item. Bid as you normally would: decide the most you are willing to pay and stop there. The hidden threshold is not a reason to exceed your own limit, because you do not know how far above your bid it sits.

What happens when the auction ends unmet
If the reserve is not met, no sale occurs with the high bidder. According to eBay, the seller may then lower the reserve or make a Second Chance Offer after the auction. eBay sends a message to bidders if the seller lowers the reserve or makes that offer, so watch your eBay messages if you were the top bidder.
What a reserve costs sellers
eBay’s seller help describes the reserve as “an optional upgrade for auction-style listings, with a fee that is charged at the time of listing” (eBay Help, “Setting a reserve price”). The current U.S. fee is the greater of $5 or 7.5% of the reserve price, with a maximum of $250. eBay states that the fee applies whether or not the item sells. The fee page also lists a flat $5 reserve fee in certain Business & Industrial categories: Heavy Equipment, Commercial Printing Presses, and Food Trucks, Trailers & Carts. Check the live fee schedule and your category before you list, since eBay can change fee rules.

Adding, lowering, or removing a reserve on a live auction
You can change a reserve after listing, but eBay limits when. To edit an existing auction:
- Open My eBay Selling or Seller Hub and find the auction.
- Choose Revise.
- Under Pricing, enter or change the reserve.
- Select Continue and complete the revision as the flow prompts you.

If a lowered reserve falls below a high bidder’s maximum bid, eBay lowers that maximum to $1 below the new reserve and contacts bidders to ask them to reconfirm their interest. Expect that message if you lower a reserve late in a competitive auction.

Use a reserve when you need a hard floor, the item’s value is uncertain, and you are willing to pay the fee even if nothing sells. Skip it when you already know your acceptable price, when the item is low-value enough that the minimum fee is a large share of its worth, or when you can meet your goal with a starting bid or Best Offer. No independent statistical study establishes that reserves improve sale outcomes, and eBay presents a low opening bid as a listing consideration, not a guaranteed result. Treat the reserve as a pricing decision with a known cost, not a way to raise sale prices.
Edge cases and common mistakes
- Assuming the top bid wins. Once you see “Reserve not met,” the high bid alone does not win the item.
- Looking for the reserve amount. You will not see it unless the seller states it, so use the status message as your only signal.
- Waiting too long to change a reserve. On a standard listing, the 12-hour window closes, and the reserve can no longer be lowered or removed as easily. Make the change early.
- Relying on Motors rules for other categories. The eBay Motors reserve guidance is category-specific. It states that the reserve is a hidden minimum, the listing shows whether it has been met, and the seller is not obligated to sell if it is unmet. Check the eBay Motors reserve price page for vehicle listings rather than assuming the same timing rules apply.
