Ecommerce email marketing is a permission-based way for an online store to communicate with prospective and current customers through transactional, promotional, and lifecycle messages. It can support sales and customer loyalty, but email-attributed revenue is not automatically profit or proof that a campaign caused an additional sale. A useful strategy matches messages to customer needs, protects deliverability, and measures sales alongside list health.

What is ecommerce email marketing?

It is the use of email to sell, educate, or build loyalty with an online store’s prospects and customers, as described in Shopify’s ecommerce email marketing guide. The channel has several distinct jobs:

  • Transactional email: Information tied to an action, such as a checkout or order. Its primary purpose is to help the customer complete or understand that transaction.
  • Promotional campaigns: Messages sent to announce products, offers, or other news to an eligible audience.
  • Lifecycle email: Messages prompted by a customer’s stage or behavior, such as joining a list, leaving checkout, or becoming a past customer.

These categories can overlap in practice, but the purpose matters: a receipt should not be treated like an ordinary sales blast, and a promotional message should be relevant to the people receiving it.

How to start email marketing for an online store

1. Set a business goal and identify the customer context

Decide what the message should help accomplish before choosing a design or writing copy. A welcome sequence may orient a new subscriber; a checkout reminder may help a shopper return; and a relevant replenishment, complementary-product, or win-back message may support a future purchase. These are opportunities, not guaranteed outcomes. Tailor them to the product, customer behavior, and the permissions the customer has given.

2. Build a permission-based list

Make the subscription expectation clear and do not buy lists or send marketing without permission. Shopify also suggests signup approaches beyond discounts, including useful downloads, contests, in-person requests, and packaging inserts. A list grows more sustainably when the reason to subscribe matches what the store will actually send.

Review inactive subscribers rather than continuing indefinitely to mail an old, unengaged list. Poor engagement, bounces, and complaints can undermine sender reputation and inbox placement.

3. Choose an email service provider that fits the store

There is no universal best platform. Shopify’s guide names Shopify Messaging and Shopify-integrated apps such as Klaviyo, Privy, and Omnisend; that list is not a comparative endorsement. The guide does not provide a current like-for-like feature or price comparison, so check each provider’s current product documentation and pricing for your store.

What to compare Questions to ask
Store integration and customer data Does it connect reliably to your ecommerce platform and make useful order and customer information available for segmentation?
Segmentation and automation Can you target meaningful customer groups and build the workflows and branching your use cases require?
Campaign design and testing Are the editor and templates manageable for your team, and can you test message variations?
Reporting and attribution Can you review clicks, conversions, attributed revenue, and list-health signals together?
Deliverability monitoring Can you authenticate the sending domain and monitor bounces, complaints, and other delivery indicators?
Cost and operational complexity How do list size and send volume affect current pricing, and how much time or expertise will the system take to run?

Which emails should an ecommerce store send?

Choose each message by its purpose, trigger, audience, timing, relevance, and the outcome you want to measure.

Message type Typical trigger and audience Useful outcome to assess
Transactional A customer action such as checkout or an order; send the information relevant to that transaction. Whether the customer receives the needed information and can complete or understand the transaction.
Welcome A new subscriber joins the list. Engagement and, where appropriate, subsequent conversion.
Abandoned-checkout reminder A shopper leaves checkout without completing the purchase. Whether recipients return and complete a purchase.
Relevant product campaign A customer or segment may have a reason to consider a related or replenishment product. Whether the message contributes to an order or order value without sacrificing relevance.
Win-back A past customer has not returned within a period meaningful to the product and buying cycle. Whether the customer makes a repeat purchase.

Shopify connects welcome and abandoned-cart messages with conversion, win-back campaigns with purchase frequency, and relevant product campaigns with order value. Those are strategic aims, not promises that automation will produce a particular result.

How to improve deliverability

Deliverability depends partly on sender reputation, which can be affected by engagement, bounces, complaints, and domain authentication. Shopify Help Center recommends authenticating the sending domain, sending to engaged subscribers, and monitoring delivery metrics in its deliverability guidance.

  • Authenticate the domain used to send email, following your email provider’s current setup instructions.
  • Send to people who have a valid basis to receive the messages and pay attention to signs of declining engagement.
  • Monitor bounces, spam complaints, and other delivery metrics; investigate problems instead of repeatedly sending to an unhealthy segment.
  • Use Google Postmaster Tools as one possible monitoring option. Shopify’s guidance says domain and spam-rate data requires sending at least 5,000 messages daily to Gmail addresses; check the live tool requirements because they can change.

Shopify states that Gmail and Yahoo have enforced a spam-complaint-rate threshold below 0.3% since February 1, 2024. Treat that as a dated threshold, not a guarantee of inbox placement or a complete statement of current sender requirements; verify the latest Shopify deliverability guidance and the relevant email providers’ current rules.

How to measure revenue without mistaking attribution for profit

Read campaign results as a learning cycle, not as a single headline number. Track list growth and health alongside business outcomes:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Audience and engagement: list growth, clicks, and the performance of meaningful recipient segments.
  • Business outcomes: conversions and revenue attributed to email, interpreted in the context of the store’s overall sales and costs.
  • List health: bounces, spam complaints, and signs that recipients are no longer engaged.
  • Learning: tests of message variations and the results for the groups that received them.

Open rates are an imperfect engagement proxy. Apple iOS Mail Privacy Protection can affect open measurement; Klaviyo’s vendor guidance, updated March 10, 2026, discusses that limitation alongside campaign and flow metrics. Use clicks and business outcomes as part of the picture rather than treating opens as a reliable measure of attention.

Attributed revenue is also not the same as incremental revenue: a platform’s attribution report alone cannot establish that the email caused a purchase that would not otherwise have happened. Shopify’s guide reports Drew Sanocki, identified there as AutoAnything CEO and Shopify Academy course instructor, saying he had seen many successful stores get about 20% of total revenue from email. That is his observation as reported by Shopify, not an independent population estimate or a forecast for an individual store.

For testing, compare one meaningful variation at a time. Shopify describes sending alternatives to smaller groups and using analytics to select a version for the remaining recipients. Keep the audience and goal in view when interpreting results; a single open-rate or click-rate benchmark is not a guarantee or universal standard.

What legal rules should merchants consider?

Requirements depend on geography, consent basis, message purpose, and sender practices. The US Federal Trade Commission says businesses using email need to know about CAN-SPAM; Shopify also flags GDPR for EU personal data and CASL in Canada. The FTC’s CAN-SPAM compliance guide and Shopify’s strategy guide are general orientation, not a complete analysis of a particular merchant’s obligations or legal advice. Check the rules that apply to your business and audience before sending.
