iam8bit is suing Skybound Game Studios over an alleged accounting and contract dispute, as well as claims involving fraud and the use of confidential information and marketing materials tied to Stray. Skybound denies the claims. The available disclosures do not establish that a court has found fraud or theft, or that the case has reached a final resolution.
What is the iam8bit lawsuit about?
Skybound Holdings’ disclosure to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission says Skybound Game Studios was served with a complaint on December 4, 2025, by a video game co-publisher with which it had a strategic partnership agreement. Engadget identifies that plaintiff as iam8bit.
The SEC filing dates the agreement to May 2020 and says it was terminated in November 2023, although some rights and obligations survived. Engadget separately describes the companies as entering a partnership in April 2021; the available accounts do not reconcile those dates, so they should not be treated as interchangeable.
The complaint’s causes of action vary by source. The SEC disclosure lists fraud, conversion, breach of contract, breach of the implied covenant of good faith, negligence, and violations of the California Uniform Trade Secret Act. Engadget also reports claims of unjust enrichment and misappropriation. These are allegations in a lawsuit, not findings by a court.

- Trial by Trolley is the latest party game from Cyanide & Happiness, the same people who ruined the Internet.
- You’re the operator of an out-of-control trolley, and must make horrible, unspeakable decisions about who to run over!
- On the left: a kiddy pool full of babies. On the right: the scientist who will one day cure cancer. You have to run over one of them.
- 500 high quality cards will help you build horrible ethical dilemmas, and force your friends to act on them! Finally, a party game that weighs on your conscience for days.
- In the UK trolley means grocery cart, which makes this game even crazier, probably.
What is iam8bit accusing Skybound of?
Financial reporting and disputed expenses
iam8bit alleges that Skybound did not provide accurate monthly financial reports as required and included millions of dollars in disputed expense items. Engadget quotes the complaint as saying, “Skybound failed to provide the monthly reports as agreed.” The dispute over reporting and expenses is central to the accounting claims.
Confidential information and the Stray release
The complaint also concerns a separate deal for a physical Nintendo Switch release of Stray. According to Engadget, iam8bit says it created promotional materials for the game’s PlayStation and Xbox launch, then alleges Skybound used confidential information about iam8bit’s royalty split with Annapurna Interactive to secure a Nintendo deal that excluded iam8bit. iam8bit also alleges that marketing materials were copied.

The reported figures describe claims or amounts disclosed in connection with the case, not money awarded by a court. They may cover different scopes of relief and should not be added together as though they were a single damages award.

In its SEC filing, Skybound Game Studios says the claims are without merit. It characterizes the non-contractual allegations as, in practice, an accounting dispute and says it retained outside counsel.

No final judgment or resolution is established by the available sources. Skybound’s SEC filing described the case as being in the pleadings and discovery stages.
