Zellers has moved from a single Edmonton store to a phased plan for national expansion. In June 2026 it named two Ontario standalone stores: one at 80 Orfus Road in North York/Toronto, scheduled to open June 18, 2026, and one at Tecumseh Mall in Windsor, announced for July 2026. The most recent official Zellers release we could find, dated June 16, 2026, still described Windsor as “set to open July 2026 (date TBC).” We found no later official confirmation that Windsor has opened, and no complete list of current Zellers store locations as of October 8, 2026. Treat Windsor as planned, not open, until Zellers or the mall confirms it.
How Zellers got from Edmonton to a national plan
The expansion has come in a sequence of company announcements. Each one adds a different kind of claim, so it helps to separate what was said, when, and what it establishes.

What Zellers says about the Edmonton store
Zellers says its first new standalone store at Londonderry Mall exceeded expectations. In a company release, Chief Operating Officer Joey Benitah said: “Launching our first store exceeded our expectations in every way.” The same release attributes ongoing traffic, positive feedback, and sales above internal targets to the company.
These are the company’s own assessments. The releases we reviewed include no independent sales totals, visitor counts, or audited results, so “successful” should be read as Zellers’ description of the store, not a verified performance figure. The store’s square footage is not stated in the releases we reviewed.

What the national plan actually commits to
The January 2026 release describes a phased approach with two stated features: a focus on major Canadian markets, and flexibility in how the company handles real estate. That language signals intent, but it does not tell a reader which city comes next or when. For a shopper, a city becomes meaningful only when a specific address and opening date are published, and in this case the company had named only two Ontario sites as of the most recent release we found.

The Toronto launch was built around promotion. The 25 ft. inflatable Zeddy bear was installed outside the store before the announced opening. That is a marketing figure, not a sales or traffic statistic, and it says nothing about how the store is performing.

Announced versus confirmed: how to check a store before you plan around it
Retail openings often shift by days or weeks, and a month-only announcement leaves a lot of room. Before you make a trip or buy something for a specific store, check these points in order:
- Search for the most recent Zellers release on Canada Newswire and confirm its date is later than the one you are reading.
- Look for language that says the store is open, not that it is “set to open” or “date TBC.”
- Confirm the address and opening status with the mall directory or by phoning the mall before you travel.
- Check the store’s own hours and policies once it is open. The releases we reviewed do not describe them.
Why the square footage figures differ
Two different size numbers appear in Zellers’ announcements, and they measure different things. The 30,000 to 50,000 sq. ft. range describes the planned concept as a whole, announced in October 2025. The 25,000 sq. ft. figure is the specified size of the Toronto store at 80 Orfus Road, announced in June 2026. Neither is a guarantee about Windsor, and the Windsor size has not been stated in the releases we reviewed.

What the new stores are meant to sell
Zellers describes the stores as small-format, curated department stores whose assortments will change based on customer feedback. The announced categories are apparel, accessories, home, seasonal goods, toys, licensed items, gifts, snacks, and lifestyle products. The June 2026 release names a curated toy assortment expected to include plush toys, puzzles, outdoor games, and licensed products, and it names brands and categories in home and apparel.
The releases do not describe pricing, rent, or profitability, so they cannot tell a shopper how the stores compare with other retailers on price.

Who owns the Zellers name
According to Zellers, Les Ailes de la Mode Inc. acquired the Zellers trademarks from Hudson’s Bay Company in August 2025. That ownership history comes from the company’s own releases; we did not find an independent confirmation in the materials reviewed.
What this means for your budget
- Do not plan a purchase or a trip around Windsor yet. Until a current official source confirms it is open, any plan built on that date carries the risk of a delay.
- Do not use Zellers’ performance claims to judge value. Positive customer response and sales above target are company statements, and no price data accompanies them.
- Compare prices yourself. A new concept with a curated assortment may price differently from the older Zellers stores, and the announcements do not say how.
- Read the store’s own return and gift-card policies when it opens. The releases we reviewed do not describe them.
Zellers is expanding, but for now the verifiable part is narrower: one Edmonton store, a stated intent to lease in major markets, and two named Ontario sites, only one of which has a confirmed opening date in its own announcement. The next official release will show whether Windsor has opened and whether the store list has grown.
