The South African Reserve Bank search result displayed 16.6495 ZAR per US dollar, published 1 October 2026. That is a dated reference value—not a verified live rate for 8 October 2026 or a promise of what a bank, card issuer, cash bureau or transfer service will pay. At that quoted direction, R1,000 is approximately US$60.06 before provider spreads or fees.
How much is 1 South African rand in US dollars?
The available dated SARB result quotes 16.6495 South African rand for US$1. Inverting that figure, R1 is about US$0.06006, and R1,000 is about US$60.06. These are arithmetic estimates from the 1 October 2026 reference value, not live customer quotes. Check the South African Reserve Bank market data for its published rate and date.
How to convert rand to dollars
- Check the quote direction. A quote of 16.6495 ZAR per USD means one US dollar costs 16.6495 rand. The Federal Reserve’s historical rand series also expresses the rate as South African rand per US dollar. See the Federal Reserve’s H.10 historical series.
- Divide rand by the ZAR-per-USD quote. For example, R1,000 ÷ 16.65 ≈ US$60.06. The calculation estimates the amount at that reference rate, before a provider’s exchange spread or fees.
- Use the provider’s actual offer to estimate a transaction. Check its quoted rate, any fees and the final amount the recipient gets. Reference rates do not establish a universal rate for customers.
If a quote instead gives dollars per rand, multiply the rand amount by that figure. The two quote directions are reciprocals, so dividing by a rand-per-dollar rate and multiplying by a dollar-per-rand rate are equivalent when using matching values.
Why published rates may differ from your transaction rate
Reference rates have specific conventions
The Federal Reserve describes its H.10 bilateral rates as noon buying rates in New York for cable transfers payable in foreign currencies, based on information collected from a sample of market participants. That convention is not the same as a guaranteed offer to an individual exchanging cash or sending money.

Publication can lag the market
The Federal Reserve says bilateral exchange-rate data are updated every Monday at 4:15 p.m. and run through the preceding Friday. A published observation may therefore reflect an earlier market date, rather than the rate available at the moment you check it. The H.10 search result was labeled as a 8 September 2026 release, so it should not be treated as an October 8 live quote.
Customs rates serve a different purpose
The South African Revenue Service provides a date- and country-selectable exchange-rate lookup for customs purposes. SARS says the information is based on the best information available and advises users to confirm with their local Customs office if in doubt. A customs rate is not proof of the cash, card or transfer rate available to a consumer. Use the SARS exchange-rate lookup for customs context.

What to check before exchanging or transferring money
- Quote and direction: confirm whether the number means rand per dollar or dollars per rand.
- Date or timestamp: make sure the quoted observation is current enough for your purpose.
- Rate and fees: compare the provider’s offered rate and any separate charges.
- Final payout: compare the amount of US dollars the recipient will actually receive, rather than relying on a reference rate alone.
