Possibly, but a grandparent’s birthplace in Europe does not by itself open the door to a passport. A grandparent route works when the grandparent was a citizen of that country and that citizenship passed through each generation between the grandparent and you, under the law in force at each birth. Some routes then require a registration or naturalization application, a language requirement, or both.
The European Union’s official overview of citizenship notes that descent may be a route where a parent or grandparent was a citizen, while stressing that conditions and application processes differ by country. This article checks five countries against their official guidance: Ireland, Italy, Hungary, Germany and Poland. It is not a complete list of every European country with a grandparent-based route, and it is not an eligibility decision for any individual.
What your grandparent actually has to have passed on
The starting point is citizenship, not geography. A grandparent who was born in a town that now sits inside a European country’s borders may never have held that country’s citizenship. The official guidance behind this article asks two different questions: was the grandparent a citizen of the country, and did the law transmit that citizenship down the family line?
Five facts decide most cases:
- The grandparent’s citizenship. Establish that the ancestor was a citizen at the relevant time. Being born within a present-day border is not the same thing, and historical law can differ from current law.
- Every parent-child link. Each step from the grandparent to you needs its own proof. Hungary’s guidance is explicit that an ancestor’s birth record alone may not show the intervening generations.
- Dates of birth and of key events. The law in force at each birth can decide whether citizenship passed. Germany’s guidance says rules vary with dates and historical law, so each transmission has to be traced separately.
- Retention or loss. Check whether citizenship was kept or lost before the next generation was born. An interruption in one generation can break the chain for everyone after it.
- Country-specific conditions. Language ability, residence, application steps and document rules vary by route. A route described as descent can still carry conditions.
Citizenship comes first, and the passport comes after
A passport is an application made once you hold citizenship, not the first step toward it. Some countries make this explicit. Poland, for example, separates an application to be granted Polish citizenship from an application for official confirmation that Polish citizenship was possessed or lost. Those are different legal questions with different evidence, so a family history that answers one may not answer the other. Confirm which question a country’s process actually asks before you gather documents.

How the five routes compare
The table compares the countries on the axes that most often decide a case. “Not stated” means the cited official guidance does not address that point. It does not mean the condition is absent, so check the current official page before assuming anything.
| Country | Route named in official guidance | Can a generation be skipped? | Language or residence condition | Proof emphasized |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ireland | Registration on the Foreign Births Register, then a passport application | Yes, as written: the grandparent born on the island of Ireland is the named link | Not stated in the cited guidance | Original civil documents for the applicant and relevant family members |
| Italy | Descent (ius sanguinis), with 2025 limits on automatic acquisition for certain people born abroad who hold another citizenship | Not stated in the ministry guidance cited; each generation’s status must be checked | Not stated in the cited guidance | Ministry and consular guidance for the exception that applies to the facts |
| Hungary | Simplified naturalization based on an ancestor, distinct from descent | Not applicable as a rule; the full ascending line must be documented | Sufficient Hungarian-language ability | Evidence establishing every generation of the line |
| Germany | Citizenship by descent through a parent | No. A parent must have acquired citizenship through the grandparent and passed it on | Not stated in the cited German guidance | Tracing each transmission under the law applicable to each birth |
| Poland | Application to be granted citizenship, or application to confirm possession or loss | Not stated; the lineage and historical legal facts must be established | Not stated in the cited guidance | Evidence about parents and, where relevant, more distant ancestors |
Ireland
The Department of Foreign Affairs says a person born outside Ireland can become an Irish citizen if a grandparent was born on the island of Ireland, through the Foreign Births Register. Once entered in the register, the person is an Irish citizen and entitled to apply for an Irish passport. This is the clearest case among the five where the grandparent is named as the link. Its application instructions ask for original civil documents and supporting records about the applicant and the relevant family members, so plan for originals rather than informal copies.

Italy
The Italian Ministry describes descent as a core principle of Italian citizenship. It also states that Decree-Law 36 of 28 March 2025, converted with amendments by Law 74 of 23 May 2025, changed automatic acquisition for certain people born abroad who also hold another citizenship, subject to specified exceptions. Older summaries that describe Italian descent as always automatic and unlimited predate that change and should not be relied on. If you were born abroad and hold another citizenship, identify whether an exception applies to your facts before drawing any conclusion, and confirm the position with the ministry or the relevant consulate.
Hungary
Hungarian embassy guidance separates descent from simplified naturalization. The ancestry-based simplified naturalization route covers a person whose ancestor was a Hungarian citizen or is likely of Hungarian origin. It carries conditions, including sufficient Hungarian-language ability, and it requires evidence establishing the ascending line. A grandparent’s birthplace alone does not make a person Hungarian. Because this track is a naturalization application rather than automatic descent, expect a language requirement and a documentary file built around each generation.

Germany
The German Federal Foreign Office’s page “Am I a German citizen?” states: “You cannot skip a generation. In other words, you yourself cannot acquire German citizenship by descent from a German grandparent.” The same guidance explains that a parent may have acquired German citizenship through the grandparent, and the applicant may then have acquired it through the parent. The route therefore runs through a parent who actually held the citizenship and transmitted it. Because rules vary with dates and historical law, trace each transmission rather than inferring a direct grandparent claim.
Poland
Polish government guidance distinguishes applying to be granted Polish citizenship from applying for official confirmation of possession or loss of Polish citizenship. It identifies evidence about parents, and about more distant ancestors where appropriate, as relevant. The existence of a Polish ancestor is not itself a finding that citizenship passed to you. The lineage and the historical legal facts must be established, and that work usually takes most of the effort in a Polish file.

Assemble the family chain before you contact a consulate
Building the chain on paper first shows quickly whether a route is plausible. Work through these steps in order:
- Write one line per person, from you up to the ancestor. Include the full name as it appears on records, every spelling variant, the birth date and place, and the citizenship each person held at relevant dates.
- Attach a record for every link. Your birth certificate should name your parent, your parent’s birth certificate should name the grandparent, and a marriage certificate or other record should explain any name change between them.
- Mark every event that could interrupt citizenship: naturalization in another country, renunciation, loss, adoption, or a name change. Note the date of each child’s birth relative to those events, since timing can decide the outcome.
- Open the official citizenship or consular page for the country and list its required forms, record types, translation rules, and whether an apostille or legalization is required. Check fees and processing information on the same page, because they vary by country and by route.
- Only after citizenship is established or acquired, prepare the passport application under that country’s passport process.
Common failure points
- Relying on a grandparent’s birthplace instead of the grandparent’s citizenship.
- Using an ancestor’s birth record without the records for the generations in between.
- Assuming a generation can be skipped in a country where official guidance says it cannot, as Germany does.
- Treating a Hungarian ancestry route as automatic descent, when it is a naturalization application with a language requirement.
- Reading pre-2025 summaries of Italian descent rules.
- Choosing the Polish confirmation track when the question is really whether citizenship can be granted, or the reverse.
