What Are Your Odds of Finding a Job in Games? Project Flagpole’s Estimates

Amir Satvat’s 2024 Project Flagpole model estimated about a 10% chance of finding a games job within 12 months—but that is a community-based estimate, not a personal forecast.

In Amir Satvat’s 2024 Project Flagpole community model, the estimated chance of finding a games-industry job within 12 months was about 10%; the reported estimate rose to 16% by month 22. Those are community-based estimates, not a universal rate or a personal forecast. The model reported a different, higher outcome for finding any job: 54% by month 12 and 71% by month 22.

What the Project Flagpole estimates say

Satvat wrote: “The odds of finding a games job in games over 12 months are better than previously thought – closer to 10%, not 7-8%.” In the same post, he said: “By month 12, the odds of finding ANY job are 54%.” The figures come from separate outcomes: a job in games versus any job for people in the broader community cohort looking for games work. GamesBeat’s June 2024 article, updated June 18, 2025, says the project analyzed more than 1.6 million data points gathered from community resources, talent professionals, community members, and applicants since November 2022.

Outcome reported by Satvat in 2024 By month 12 By month 22
Find a games-industry job About 10% 16%
Find any job, among the broader cohort seeking games work 54% 71%

These percentages describe reported estimates, not a promise that a person who searches for a given number of months will reach that outcome. The underlying dataset, complete methodology, confidence intervals, and independent validation are not available in the cited material, so the estimates cannot be treated as population-representative or used to calculate an individual’s chances.

Why “a games job” and “any job” are different

The 10% and 16% figures refer to games-industry roles. The 54% and 71% figures refer to any job, which can include work outside games. Comparing them as if they measured the same outcome would overstate the odds of landing a games role. For someone making a household budget or deciding how long to search before considering other fields, the distinction matters: the broader outcome is more likely in Satvat’s reported model, but it does not mean the person found work in games.

Who was counted—and what counted as success

Satvat said the updated analysis included community members looking for games roles, not just people laid off. The cohort also included people who reported that they were done searching. For the successful-placement outcome, he said people in underemployment or contract work were excluded; in a follow-up, he noted that people in underemployment, fractional work, contract work, or other non-full-time roles could remain counted as still searching. GamesBeat’s account of the analysis describes the community data behind the estimates.

These definitions affect how to interpret the percentages. A person may be earning income from a contract or fractional role yet still be seeking full-time work; that person may not count as a successful placement under the described definition. The figures therefore should not be read simply as the share of people who earned any money during their search.

Community-based data can also reflect who chooses to join and participate, how members describe their search status, and the labor market at the time. The available reporting does not quantify how much these factors change the estimates.

How experience and search scope change the comparison

People with prior games experience

Satvat estimated that people who had previously worked in games had about a one-in-four chance of finding another games role over 12 months. This is a comparison he reported in 2024, not a guarantee for an experienced applicant or a quantified estimate for every other subgroup.

Searching only in games versus widening the search

Satvat also reported that overall job-search success was more than five times higher at month 12 and later among people who widened their search beyond games. That is an observed comparison in his account; it does not establish that widening a search alone caused the difference. People who broaden their search may differ in experience, circumstances, or other ways.

For a job seeker, widening the search can mean considering adjacent industries or roles that use transferable skills, while continuing to apply for games jobs. The reported comparison supports treating “any job” as a separate possibility worth considering; it does not establish which roles will suit a particular person.

Location and remote work are part of the picture

In a separate 2024 post, Satvat said remote roles made up 14% of opportunities in the dataset he was discussing. That is a dated, dataset-specific figure—not the current share of games jobs available remotely. A search restricted to remote work, a particular country, or a narrow set of locations may have a different pool of openings, but the cited material does not quantify the effect of those constraints on an individual’s odds.

Later market figures provide context, not a personal probability

In 2026, Satvat estimated roughly 288,000 seekers and about 4,500 net new roles across 2022–2026, or roughly five seekers per hire. These are his estimates of market supply and demand, not an update to the Project Flagpole probability model. They should not be combined with the 2024 percentages to calculate a personal likelihood of being hired.

He also reported that 6% of 40,000 total roles had any workbook engagement, and that around 1,500 of 14,500 games roles had engagement. “Engagement” here describes community interactions with listings; it is not the share of viable positions, the number of hires, or an applicant’s probability of getting hired.

For separate context, InGame Job’s 2025 employment survey reported that 15% of respondents had been job hunting for over a year or were still searching, while 26% had experienced layoffs in the preceding year. This is a different survey and population, not a Project Flagpole probability sample, so it should not be treated as a direct confirmation of Satvat’s estimates.

How to use the figures in a job-search decision

  • Set the outcome first: Decide whether your goal is specifically a games role, any paid work, or full-time employment. The reported percentages do not represent interchangeable outcomes.
  • Treat the rates as context: Use the figures to understand the difficulty Satvat observed in his community data, not to forecast your own search or set a fixed deadline.
  • Make your constraints explicit: Consider whether location, remote-only requirements, seniority, or a games-only search narrows your options; the cited estimates do not quantify those individual effects.
  • Review your finances separately: A job-search estimate is not a budget or runway calculation. Base spending and contingency decisions on your own savings, obligations, and income options rather than assuming a placement by a particular month.

What the figures cannot tell you

They do not establish the probability that you personally will find a games job, the typical time to hire for a specific role, or the effect of any single job-search tactic. The percentages are Satvat’s reported estimates from a community-based model; the available reporting does not provide enough methodological detail to calculate uncertainty around them or to make a reliable individualized prediction.
