Deadlines are short, usually 30 to 60 days, so start the report as soon as the waiting period ends.
This guide covers U.S. carriers and retailers, specifically Amazon, USPS, UPS, and FedEx. Carrier and retailer wording changes, so confirm the current policy on the company’s own help pages before relying on a specific deadline.
Start with a search you can finish in 10 minutes
A “delivered” scan records that a carrier scanned the parcel at a location. It does not tell you where the parcel was left. Work through these checks before you file anything:
- Confirm the address on the order. Open the order details in your account and check the shipping address, including the unit number. A parcel sent to an old address can be “delivered” correctly and still be nowhere near you.
- Look for the delivery notice and photo. Check your email and the carrier app for an attempted-delivery notice or a proof-of-delivery photo. The photo often shows the exact spot.
- Search the delivery location. Check the front door, porch, back patio, side gate, garage, and any mailbox or package area. Drivers sometimes leave parcels out of plain sight, such as behind a planter or beside a door.
- Ask the people around you. Ask everyone in the household, and neighbors who share your entrance, whether they accepted or moved the package.
- Check the place the scan names. If the tracking details show a building name, locker, or facility, check there too.
Wait the period the sender gives before escalating
Premature scans happen. Amazon tells customers that packages may be scanned as delivered before they arrive, and it advises waiting 48 hours before treating the parcel as missing. For USPS, the escalation trigger is different: a missing eligible item becomes reportable once more than one postal business day has passed since the “delivered” scan. That threshold is USPS’s, and it is not a rule that applies to every carrier. Use the waiting period that matches your carrier or retailer, and use the calendar to track it.

How each carrier and retailer handles a missing delivered package
The routes below depend on who shipped the order and which carrier moved it. The table compares the official steps as the carriers describe them.

Amazon orders
Amazon’s guidance has two branches. If a third-party seller shipped the order, contact that seller. If Amazon shipped it, contact Customer Service within 30 days of the expected delivery date. The two routes can have different remedies, so check the seller name on the order before you write to anyone.
USPS
USPS tracking shows the recorded delivery date, time, and location for a delivered item, which helps you check whether the scan matches a place you can search. If the item is still missing more than one postal business day after the delivered scan, go to the “Email Us” page on usps.com and submit a service request to your local Post Office for eligible items. Eligibility depends on mail class and service, so not every mailpiece qualifies.

Do not confuse this case with a different USPS situation. A tracking history can lack a delivery scan even when the item was delivered, because the scan was not captured. That is a tracking gap, not a “delivered” scan that cannot be found, and the escalation step is different.

UPS
UPS tells recipients who still cannot find a delivered package to contact the seller to start a claim. UPS’s support page also encourages opening a loss investigation within 30 days of the expected delivery date. Its claims page sets a separate window: start a claim within 60 days of the scheduled delivery for lost or damaged packages. Treat these as two steps with two clocks. The earlier date is the one to watch.
FedEx
FedEx suggests using picture proof of delivery if it is available. To report a missing package:

- Open the FedEx tracking page and enter the tracking or reference number.
- Select Manage Delivery, then select Report Missing Package.
- Confirm that you have checked the likely locations.
- Submit your contact details.
FedEx assigns a case number and says it will contact you. Keep that number. If the report does not resolve the problem, FedEx’s separate claim process for eligible priority, standard, or freight shipments can be filed online and may require the tracking or PRO number plus supporting documents. Service type determines which route applies.
Gather these records before you file
- The tracking number, and the PRO number for freight shipments
- The order number, order date, and the seller or shipper name
- The delivered scan’s date, time, and location, with a screenshot
- Proof of purchase or value, such as an invoice or receipt
- Any delivery notice or photo
- A short list of the places you searched and the people you asked
UPS lists an invoice as useful claim documentation. FedEx says a claim may need supporting records such as a receipt. A complete file lets the seller or carrier check the claim without asking you for basics.
Contact the seller as well as the carrier
For many online orders, the carrier cannot refund you. The seller or retailer controls the remedy, which may be a replacement, refund, or credit. UPS directs recipients to the seller to start a claim, and Amazon routes third-party seller orders to the seller. Email or message the seller with your order number, the tracking number, the delivered scan, and what you searched. Ask for their claim or replacement process in writing.

Watch for delivery scams while you investigate
A missing package is a common setup for fake delivery texts. The Federal Trade Commission warns that messages impersonating USPS or another delivery company may claim there is a delivery problem or ask you to update shipping preferences. Do not tap the link. Open the carrier or retailer account directly, or use the tracking number in the official app or website, and check the shipping information there. You can forward suspicious texts to 7726 and report fraud at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. The FTC guidance on this topic is dated April 2025.
What these procedures do and do not guarantee
These are carrier and retailer support procedures, not a promise of reimbursement. Whether you are paid depends on the seller, the carrier, the shipping service, the payment method, and the claim’s eligibility. Deadlines and eligibility can change by service and by the shipper’s own rules. If you are close to a deadline, file the claim before you have finished every possible search, and add the search results later.
