Nintendo of America raised the suggested retail price (MSRP) of the standard console from $449.99 to $499.99 on September 1, 2026, and that price is in effect as of October 8, 2026. Whether buying now still makes sense depends on whether you need the console now, whether you would buy a bundle, and what a retailer is actually charging. This article covers the U.S. change first, then the other markets Nintendo has announced, the reasons Nintendo gave, and how to weigh the decision.
What changed in the U.S.
Nintendo of America’s official announcement says that, beginning September 1, 2026, the MSRP of the Nintendo Switch 2 system in the U.S. moved from $449.99 to $499.99 (Nintendo of America, “Price Revision for Nintendo Switch 2 System”). That is a $50.00 increase, or about 11.1% over the old price. The same announcement states that original Nintendo Switch pricing is not changing.

An MSRP is a suggested price, not a guaranteed shelf price. Retailers set their own prices, and those can sit above or below the MSRP at any time. Nintendo’s notice does not tell you what any particular store is charging, so compare the $499.99 figure against live listings before you decide.
Where the increase applies
The increase is not limited to the U.S. Nintendo’s May 8, 2026 corporate notice lists several regional changes (Nintendo Co., Ltd., May 8, 2026 price revision notice), and Nintendo Australia’s support notice lists the Australian and New Zealand changes (Nintendo Australia support notice).

The percentage column is our arithmetic from the listed prices. Because the notice mixes tax-exclusive and tax-inclusive prices, the percentages do not measure like-for-like price movement across countries, and you should not convert the currencies to compare them directly.
In Japan, the change applies to the domestic Japanese-language system. Nintendo’s notice says the price of the Nintendo Switch 2 multilingual system sold through My Nintendo Store did not change. Nintendo also published a Japan-only bundle announcement on October 6, 2026 (Nintendo Co., Ltd., October 6, 2026 Japan bundle announcement); it does not apply to U.S. buyers.
Nintendo’s notice says other areas may also see price changes but does not provide a complete worldwide schedule. It also says Latin American Switch 2 pricing will be shared later. If you live in a market not listed above, the absence of your country from this table does not mean your price is unchanged.
Why Nintendo says it raised prices
Nintendo’s official explanation refers to “various changes in market conditions” that it expects to last over the medium to long term. In its fiscal-year results briefing, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said: “This change in hardware pricing was not due to any one specific factor.” He named memory and other component prices, tariffs, foreign exchange, and oil prices among the conditions behind the change, and said he expects the surge in memory and component prices and the changes in the market environment to continue over the medium to long term (Nintendo Co., Ltd., Financial Results Briefing for Fiscal Year Ended March 2026).

Treat this as management’s account of its own costs, not an independent forecast. Nintendo’s briefing does not announce a further U.S. increase, and it does not say how long any single cost pressure will last.
The same briefing reported that Nintendo sold 19.86 million Switch 2 units through the end of the fiscal year ended March 2026, above its initial forecast of 15 million and its revised forecast of 19 million. That is a company-reported historical figure. It tells you about past demand, not whether a store has stock on a given day.
Bundles: what the extra money buys
Nintendo announced two U.S. bundles that include a 90-day Nintendo Switch Online Individual Membership (Nintendo of America, Switch 2 bundle announcement).
| Option | Price (U.S. suggested) | Premium over the $499.99 console MSRP | What’s included | Savings Nintendo states |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard Switch 2 console | $499.99 | None | Console only | Not applicable |
| Switch 2 + Nintendo Switch Sports Resort | $529.99 | $30.00 | Console, Nintendo Switch Sports Resort, 90-day Nintendo Switch Online Individual Membership | $27.98 against suggested prices for the items bought separately |
| Switch 2 + Mario Kart World | $549.99 | $50.00 | Console, full Mario Kart World game download, 90-day Nintendo Switch Online Individual Membership | $37.98 against suggested prices for the items bought separately |
Nintendo’s savings figures imply separate suggested prices of $557.97 for the Sports Resort package and $587.97 for the Mario Kart World package. Those are Nintendo’s comparison figures, not prices any store has confirmed. Nintendo also notes that actual savings may vary, that availability is while supplies last, and that retailer details apply.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A decision framework for U.S. buyers
- You need a console now, and the standard model is enough: Compare $499.99 with the live price at two or three retailers you trust, and check whether the price matches the MSRP. Buying before the next date does not avoid the September 1 increase, which has already happened.
- You want the Mario Kart World or Sports Resort package: Add the bundle premium to the console price, then compare the total with buying the console and game separately at current prices. Confirm that the membership is included and what the bundle’s availability is.
- You can wait: Nothing in the sources reviewed announces another U.S. price change. Waiting costs you time playing, and it does not guarantee a lower price. Do not treat a possible future increase as a reason to buy by a deadline.
- You live outside the U.S.: Use your local MSRP, effective date, and tax treatment from the table above, and check local retailers. Do not assume the U.S. figures apply to you.
What the sources do not establish
The Nintendo announcements establish official suggested prices, effective dates, bundle contents, and Nintendo’s own explanation. They do not establish retailer prices, current stock, or regional prices beyond the markets listed. Retailer prices and availability change often, so any price in this article is accurate only as of the dates of the cited notices, which were all issued before October 8, 2026.
The Bottom Line
For U.S. buyers, the price you were trying to beat is gone: the standard Switch 2 MSRP is $499.99 and has been since September 1, 2026. Buy now only if you need the console now and a retailer’s price matches or beats the MSRP. Pay the $30 or $50 bundle premium only if you would use the game and membership.
